College Women's Knowledge And Understanding Of Women Health Issues: A Descriptive Study, Dana Brown Jan 2020

College Women's Knowledge And Understanding Of Women Health Issues: A Descriptive Study, Dana Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Breast self-examinations, pap smears, Obstetrician and Gynecologist (OBGYN) visits, mammograms, and other preventative measures are all vital pieces of women’s health that can help determine a variety of issues and illnesses (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2020). Women are presumed to have acquired information on these issues through certain sources to guide them through their adult lives. Not every woman is familiar with, or follows, the recommended guidelines for breast self-examination or gynecological visits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 94,000 U.S. women are diagnosed each year with some form of gynecologic cancer, which disproportionately …

Learning To Jump Like Corbin Bleu: The Physics Behind Jump Rope, Caroline Camfield Jan 2020

Learning To Jump Like Corbin Bleu: The Physics Behind Jump Rope, Caroline Camfield

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project seeks to determine how engineering can be applied to the sport of jump rope so that athletes may better understand the science behind the sport and apply it to improve their performance in “speed jumping.” This style of jump rope consists of a jumper alternating their feet, with the rope passing under them with each step. Several types of ropes, handles, rope lengths, and widths between a jumper’s handles were tested to determine correlations between each variable and different STEM concept. These findings were then transitioned into a lesson plan so that both the jumpers and coaches could …

Dancers Exhibit Different Organizations Of Muscular Effort In The Dominant Versus Non-Dominant Limb During The Impact Phase Of The Grand Jeté, Brandon Nunley, Ryan Lanier, Isabella Gonzales, Tanya Calamoneri, Ali Duffy, John Robert Harry

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Overuse musculoskeletal injuries of the hip, knee, and ankle are prevalent in dancers. Differences in muscular effort between the dominant and non-dominant limbs may increase musculoskeletal injury risk during dance movements involving a jump followed by a high-impact unilateral landing. PURPOSE: To investigate potential differences in lower extremity muscular effort (i.e., joint angular work) between the dominant and non-dominant limbs during the landing phase of a grand jeté movement in dancers. METHODS: Collegiate dancers consisting of eight women (19 ± 1 y; 54.7 ± 6.9 kg; 1.7 ± 0.1 m) and two men (21 ± 1 y; 70.6 …

Exercise Cerebral Blood Flow Hemodynamics Differ In Hot Dry And Humid Conditions, Julianna J. Kilpatrick, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Kyleigh Allie, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Passive and exercise-heat stress have been reported to cause reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF); however, it is unknown if CBF velocity is different under hot dry and humid conditions. PURPOSE: This project tested the hypothesis that upright rest and exercise-heat stress in hot dry and humid conditions result in similar CBF reductions. METHODS: Seven healthy active (7 day activity: 9887±3564 steps/day; VO2max: 52±10 mL/kg/min) subjects (5M/2F, 24±9y, 171±6cm, 68±7kg) completed a 30 min baseline rest followed by 60 min of exercise at a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 12 (between light and somewhat hard) on a …

Attenuated Pulsatile Load During Metaboreflex Activation Is Associated With Excess Adiposity In Dynapenic Postmenopausal Women, Arun Maharaj, Salvador Jaime, Stephen Fischer, Arturo Figueroa Feb 2019

Attenuated Pulsatile Load During Metaboreflex Activation Is Associated With Excess Adiposity In Dynapenic Postmenopausal Women, Arun Maharaj, Salvador Jaime, Stephen Fischer, Arturo Figueroa

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The age-related loss in muscle strength (dynapenia) is associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) and fat mass (FM). Aortic pulse pressure (PP), rather than brachial PP, more closely relates to cardiovascular events because it represents left ventricular pulsatile load, which is particularly important in older women. Purpose: To examine the impact of dynapenia and adiposity on aortic BP responses to metaboreflex activation (post-exercise muscle ischemia, PEMI) in postmenopausal women. Methods: 71 postmenopausal women [(dynapenic, n=41, 57±1 years), (non-dynapenic, n=30, 59±1 years)] were included in this study. FM, percent body fat (BF%) and percent lean mass (LM%) were measured using Dual …

Lower Leg Lean Mass Is Associated With Reduced Pulse Pressure Amplification In Postmenopausal Women, Stephen M. Fischer, Salvador J. Jaime, Arun Maharaj, Arturo Figueroa Feb 2019

Lower Leg Lean Mass Is Associated With Reduced Pulse Pressure Amplification In Postmenopausal Women, Stephen M. Fischer, Salvador J. Jaime, Arun Maharaj, Arturo Figueroa

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, has been associated with increased arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity, PWV). Lower leg muscle mass has been associated with increased brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV), a measure of systemic arterial stiffness. Pulse pressure (PP) is lower in the aorta compared to the brachial artery (PP amplification, PPA), in healthy individuals. PPA decreases with aging due to increased aortic stiffening. Lower PPA is an independent predictor of cardiovascular death. It is unknown whether leg muscle mass is associated with lower PPA in postmenopausal women. Purpose: To examine relationships between leg lean mass (LegLM), PPA, and …

Low Intensity Exercise Has Greater Acute Vascular Benefits For Reducing Arterial Stiffness In Hot Compared To Neutral Conditions, Kyleigh N. Allie, Julianna Kilpatrick, Paolo Salvador, Eric Rivas Feb 2019

Low Intensity Exercise Has Greater Acute Vascular Benefits For Reducing Arterial Stiffness In Hot Compared To Neutral Conditions, Kyleigh N. Allie, Julianna Kilpatrick, Paolo Salvador, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Both exercise and passive heating cause acute reductions in blood pressure. It is unknown if exercise-heat stress causes likewise reductions or greater when combined. PURPOSE: This project tested the hypothesis that the resting and exercise-heat stress cause hypotension and improvements in arterial stiffness. METHODS: Seven healthy active (7 day activity: 9887±3564 steps/day; VO2max: 52±10 mL/kg/min ) subjects (5M/2F, 24±9y, 171±6cm, 68±7kg) completed a 30 min baseline rest followed by 60 min at an exercise intensity of their choice that represented their perceived exertion (RPE) of 12 (between light and somewhat hard) on a 20-point rating scale while being blinded to …

Validity Of Body Volume Estimates From Infrared 3-Dimensional Scanning And Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry As Compared To Air Displacement Plethysmography, Marqui Benavides, Michael Moore, Jacob Dellinger, Claire Underwood, Tyler Dierolf, Brian Adamson, Grant M. Tinsley Feb 2019

Validity Of Body Volume Estimates From Infrared 3-Dimensional Scanning And Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry As Compared To Air Displacement Plethysmography, Marqui Benavides, Michael Moore, Jacob Dellinger, Claire Underwood, Tyler Dierolf, Brian Adamson, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Traditional methods of estimating body volume (BV) such as hydrostatic weighing and air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) could theoretically be replaced using BV estimates obtained by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or infrared 3-dimensional (3D) scanning devices. Multiple 3D scanning technologies have recently become popularized, including scanners that acquire data through pattern deformations caused by the projected light over the 3D object (i.e., structured light [SL] scanners) or by calculating depth from the time it takes reflected photons to reach the scanner’s image sensor (i.e. time of flight [ToF] scanners). While these 3D scanning technologies currently predict body composition based primarily on circumference …

Skin Temperature And High Dew Point In Hot Environments Affects Self-Paced Exercise, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Julianna Kilpatrick, Kyleigh Allie, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Dew point (dp) is the absolute measure of water vapor and directly affects comfort whereas 5-10℃ feels dry; 10-15℃ feels comfortable and 20-24℃ feels uncomfortable. PURPOSE: This project tested the hypothesis that exercise in hot ambient conditions with a high dp (>20℃) would affect the selection of self-paced exercise compared to neutral dry conditions (dp). METHODS: Six healthy active (7 day activity: 9826±3900 steps/day; VO2max: 52±10 mL/kg/min ) subjects (4M/2F, 25±9y, 171±6cm, 69±7kg) completed a 30 min baseline rest then 60 min of exercise intensity they chose that represents their perceived exertion of 12 …

Age-Related Differences In Vertical Jump Power And Muscle Size And Quality Of The Vastus Lateralis, Ahalee C. Cathey, Chinonye C. Agu-Udemba, Eric J. Sobolewski, Brennan J. Thompson, Ty B. Palmer Feb 2019

Age-Related Differences In Vertical Jump Power And Muscle Size And Quality Of The Vastus Lateralis, Ahalee C. Cathey, Chinonye C. Agu-Udemba, Eric J. Sobolewski, Brennan J. Thompson, Ty B. Palmer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Previous studies have reported that decreases in muscle size and quality of the vastus lateralis (VL) may contribute to the lower vertical jump power observed in old compared to young males. However, we are aware of no previous studies that have examined the contribution of VL muscle size and quality to age-related power differences in females, nor have there been any studies that examined these differences between young, middle, and older age groups. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of age on vertical jump power and muscle size (cross-sectional area [CSA]) and quality (echo intensity [EI]) of the VL in young, …

Validity Of Four-Compartment Model Body Fat Using Single- Or Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis To Estimate Body Water, M. Lane Moore, Marqui L. Benavides, Jacob R. Dellinger, Brian T. Adamson, Claire P. Underwood, Tyler C. Dierolf, Grant M. Tinsley Feb 2019

Validity Of Four-Compartment Model Body Fat Using Single- Or Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis To Estimate Body Water, M. Lane Moore, Marqui L. Benavides, Jacob R. Dellinger, Brian T. Adamson, Claire P. Underwood, Tyler C. Dierolf, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Most common body composition assessment techniques make assumptions about the body, including the density and hydration of fat-free mass (FFM). An advantage of the four-compartment (4C) model is the ability to take these FFM characteristics into account when assessing body composition, thus reducing potential error. The total body water (TBW) estimate utilized in 4C models is particularly important due to the large contribution of water to an adult human’s total body mass (~40 - 70%) and FFM (~68 - 81%); however, the impact of utilizing different estimates of TBW within 4C model has not been fully explored. PURPOSE: The …

Comparison Of Regional Body Composition Estimates Obtained From Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry And Single-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Jacob Dellinger, M. Lane Moore, Marqui L. Benavides, Tyler C. Dierolf, Brian T. Adamson, Claire P. Underwood, Grant M. Tinsley Feb 2019

Comparison Of Regional Body Composition Estimates Obtained From Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry And Single-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Jacob Dellinger, M. Lane Moore, Marqui L. Benavides, Tyler C. Dierolf, Brian T. Adamson, Claire P. Underwood, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The anatomical distribution of fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM) is significant for health and athletic performance. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is often used for regional body composition analysis but is not portable, often inaccessible, and costly, while single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SFBIA) is a more affordable and accessible alternative. PURPOSE: The purpose of this analysis was to compare regional body composition estimates obtained via DXA and SFBIA. METHODS: After an overnight food and fluid fast, 102 adults (64 F, 38 M; age: 29.2 ± 13.4 y; BMI: 24.3 ± 3.9 kg/m2; BF%: 24.6 ± …
