The Influence Of Risk Perception, Vulnerability And Community Level Processes On Human-Wildlife Conflict In Southeastern Kenya, Jerry K. Daday, Douglas C. Smith, Michael K. Stokes, Charles Kimwele

Sociology Faculty Presentations

The prior literature on the sociology of disasters has primarily examined community responses to large-scale episodic disasters, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. However, the study of persistent and chronic disasters in developing countries represents an area that has largely been ignored in prior studies. Flint and Luloff’s (2005) Inter-actional theory as a framework, our research examines the influence of perceived risk, vulnerability and community characteristics on human-wildlife conflict among 275 subsistence-based farmers living in four small villages in Southeastern Kenya. Couple Therapy With Religious Couples, Dr. Jill D. Duba, Dr. Richard E. Watts Aug 2008

Couple Therapy With Religious Couples, Dr. Jill D. Duba, Dr. Richard E. Watts

Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications

Although 95% of married couples identify with a particular religion, there is great variation in how couples rely on their religion to define or structure their relationship. Various denominations will imply particular “rules” or will shape how the couple deals with interpersonal and family challenges, such as sexuality, parenting, and power. In this article, we review couple relationships within a religious context and advance several treatment principles for treating religious couples. We present a clinical case to illustrate marital therapy with a religious couple, with an Adlerian context.

Agreement And Group Attraction In Face-To-Face And Computer-Mediated Group Discussions, Krishnamurti Murniadi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Topics within small-group communication have been explored in many contexts, such as work group, organizational meeting, or online network. This area of discipline is considered crucial because this type of communication assimilates interpersonal relations within a social setting. Two elements that largely affect small-group communication dynamics are anonymity and social identity. This research invokes previous research in anonymity and social identity within small-group communication pertaining to the level of agreement and the level of group attraction through a series of experiments.

Anonymity in small-group communication context is defined as a condition where the group members are not identifiable. To create …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Hiv Status In Kenya, Kimberly Fletcher May 2008

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Hiv Status In Kenya, Kimberly Fletcher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the greatest threats to stability and development in Kenya. Kenya's 2003 Demographic and Health Survey includes data that make it possible to determine which groups have the highest odds of being infected. The question of who is contracting …
