The Effect Of Biofeedback Training On One Repetition Maximum Chest Press Performance, Joann C. Wakefield, Amber M. Shipherd

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(8): 1105-1115, 2017. Biofeedback is a method of controlling normally automatic bodily functions by monitoring and training to acquire voluntary control over them (13). The purpose of this study was to determine if a heart-rate variability training program utilizing the emWave biofeedback device could increase performance on a simple strength task. Participants (n = 18) were randomly assigned to one of three groups and data were collected for a period of seven weeks. Data collection consisted of participants receiving training (experimental and alternate groups) or no training (control group), followed by a chest press one …

Healthcare And Its Impact On Nurses: The United States Vs. The United Kingdom, Alexandria Colovos

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Currently, in the United States, the topic of healthcare reform is in the back of everyone’s mind. What will come of our healthcare system? Will the cost of healthcare decrease? Will patients have better access to care? With this Capstone Experience/Thesis, I wanted to explore the differences between the current healthcare system that we have in the United States, to the nearly seventy-year-old National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, which provides healthcare to all. The NHS is free at the point of care and is funded by taxation. To understand if such a system would work in the …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1038-1050, 2017. To compare energy expenditure during and after active and handheld video game drumming compared to walking and sitting. Ten experienced, college-aged men performed four protocols (one per week): no-exercise seated control (CTRL), virtual drumming on a handheld gaming device (HANDHELD), active drumming on drum pads (DRUM), and walking on a treadmill at ~30% of VO2max (WALK). Protocols were performed after an overnight fast, and expired air was collected continuously during (30min) and after (30min) exercise. Nutrient Intake Of Elite Canadian And American Athletes With Spinal Cord Injury, Heather R. Gerrish, Elizabeth Broad, Melissa Lacroix, Dana Ogan, Robert C. Pritchett, Kelly Pritchett

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1018-1028, 2017. The nutrient needs of athletes with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) are dependent on their physiological alterations and training status. Limited research is available regarding dietary intake of elite athletes with SCI and possible nutrient deficiencies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine dietary intake of elite athletes with SCI, and determine dietary intake inadequacies based on the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) comparisons. Additionally, the average energy and macronutrient (carbohydrate, protein, and fat) intake was compared based on level of injury (C level, T1-T6, T7-T12, Lumbar). A total of 39 athletes …

College Student Work Habits Are Related To Physical Activity And Fitness, Jesse Calestine, Melissa Bopp, Christopher M. Bopp, Zack Papalia

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1009-1017, 2017. Despite the known benefits of regular physical activity, research shows a significant decline in physical activity participation and an increase in sedentary behavior during young adulthood during the college years. Studies examining the relationship between academic outcomes and fitness/physical activity have not extensively examined this among college students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fitness measures (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition), physical activity, and academic outcomes in college students. This cross-sectional study had college students complete a one-time fitness assessment and survey examining …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 926-941, 2017. Applied research experiences can provide numerous benefits to undergraduate students, however few studies have assessed the perceptions of Exercise Science (EXS) students to an applied research experience. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to describe the rationale and implementation of an applied research experience into an EXS curriculum and 2) to evaluate EXS undergraduate students’ perceptions of an applied research experience. An EXS measurement course was chosen for implementation of an applied research experience. The applied research experience required groups of students to design, implement, and evaluate a student-led research …
