Decades of research exist on the public health impact of faith community nurses (FCNs), particularly congregational health promotion and disease prevention. However, the literature exploring the barriers and supports FCNs experience when serving their communities is limited. Thus, guided by Ziebarth’s (2016) conceptual framework of faith community nursing, this study explored the lived experiences of FCNs (N = 8) delivering care to faith communities in Alaska. Thematic analyses of qualitative data revealed three major themes including 1) the descriptions, characteristics, and roles performed by FCNs (e.g., active listening, policy-level recommendations); 2) barriers and other factors impacting FCNs’ delivery of care …

Fatigue Effects On Shoulder And Elbow Joint Loading During The Tennis Serve, Alexander "Sasha" Rovinsky, Sean Chen, Sam Rosenkranz, Christiane O'Hara, Scott Hazelwood
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
An effective tennis serve is one of the most crucial skills an experienced athlete will implement to gain a decisive advantage in a match. It is an incredibly dynamic, powerful chain of movements classified into preparation, acceleration and follow-through phases. Consequently, the peak physical intensity of these accelerated motions put tennis players at increased risk for shoulder injuries. PURPOSE: To assess how tennis serving arm, shoulder joint forces, shoulder rotation moment, kinematics, and muscle activity are affected by match play induced fatigue. We tested the hypothesis that tennis-related fatigue will have a significant effect on tennis serving arm and …

Occupational heat exposure increases sweat production, which can potentially lead to dehydration. A previous pilot study observation during a regular summer workday suggested that construction workers arrive at the worksite in a dehydrated state but do not experience further dehydration during their shift. This finding raises questions about whether these observations can be replicated in a larger cohort and whether hydration status declines progressively throughout the workweek. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a work shift on the hydration status of construction workers in the summer. A secondary purpose was to compare …

Speed Has No Correlation To Muscle Volume Of Hip Flexors And Tibialis Anterior Muscles In Division L Football Athletes, Isaiah B. Guymon, Malorie Wilwand, Steven P. Allen, B. Brett Mortensen, Aaron W. Johnson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In American football (AF) a desirable trait is sprint speed that leads to success such as increased touchdowns, yards gained, and number of sacks. Researchers suggest training programs can improve an athletes’ sprint speed. Considering the swing to stance phases, the hip flexors (HF) and tibialis anterior (TA) may impact an athletes’ speed. The HF initiates the swing phase, while the TA muscle dorsiflexes the foot allowing the toes to clear the ground. PURPOSE: To determine if there is a correlation between collegiate football athlete's speed and the muscle volume (MV) of HF and TA muscles. METHODS: This study …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 32. Wallace On The Tigers Of Singapore, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Historian John van Wyhe has written a good deal on Alfred Russel Wallace’s travels in the Malay Archipelago in the 1850s and 1860s, in so doing coming to a number of generally derogative surmises on Wallace’s thoughts and collecting efforts that disagree with the conclusions made by other scholars. In this work one example of such treatment is given, concerning Wallace’s estimation of the number of persons in Singapore attacked by tigers over the middle years of that century.
