Effects Of Active Sitting On Reading And Typing Task Productivity, Claire Doroff, Emily Langford, Ronald L. Snarr Jr.
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1216-1224, 2019. Increased sedentary behavior and reduced physical activity among children and adults has led to the advent of various active devices to combat these behaviors. Active sitting, consisting of modified chairs or stability balls, allows the body to stay dynamic while seated. While research has evaluated the health benefits of active sitting, minimal research has shown the effects of active sitting on productivity in adult populations. The purpose was to evaluate the effects of various chairs (active versus non-active) on typing and reading task productivity. Twenty adult participants performed typing and reading tasks …

Feasibility, Acceptability, And Preliminary Efficacy Of A Recess-Based Fitness Intervention In Elementary School Children, Christine W. St. Laurent, Sarah Burkart, Sofiya Alhassan
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1225-1243, 2019. Although fitness may benefit cognition in youth, most attention has been given to cardiorespiratory fitness despite the health benefits of muscular fitness. Few studies have examined interventions that incorporate both cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness or have been offered during school recess. Furthermore, most fitness intervention studies examining cognitive outcomes have not reported on implementation information. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy on fitness and cognition of a recess intervention in elementary school children. Two schools were randomized to either a 3-month cardiorespiratory and …

The Relationship Between Maternal And Obese Children’S Daily Physical Activity., Shelby J. Foote, Alexandra Venezia, Darby J. Winkler, Keith R. Losche, Danielle D. Wadsorth
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1302-1314, 2019. This study examined the effects of maternal influence on child’s daily physical activity. Participants consisted of eight families; parents (n = 9) and obese children (n = 10). Families were asked to attend exercise sessions at a university laboratory for 10 weeks. Daily physical activity was measured with a MovBand 3 which is a wrist worn accelerometer that records physical activity as moves. Linear mixed-effects models were used to predict daily physical activity over time and child physical activity as a function of parent physical activity on a day-to-day basis. …

Effect Of Capris In Validity Of Air-Displacement Plethysmography In Female College Students, Sydney Haynes, Joshua Miller, Kyle Susa
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1315-1321, 2019. Body composition testing is completed in human performance laboratories, local health clubs, and many other locations each day. Maintaining proper technique is required to make sure the results are reliable and valid. The purpose of this study was to compare traditional clothing (spandex shorts and sports bra) and non-traditional clothing (Capri-length spandex pants and sports bra) in females while utilizing the Bod Pod to determine body composition. Nineteen female participants ages 18 - 25 years (Mage = 21.2 years) performed two Bod Pod tests either wearing traditional or non-traditional clothing when …

Effects Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Music During High Intensity Training On Obesity And Metabolic Health In Singapore Women, Dd Salle, Ms Aman, Mn Hashim, Fy Loo, T Tran
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1254-1264, 2019. Evidence suggests that high intensity exercise aided by musicrenders positive results in health related fitness components. However, less is known about the influence synchronous and asynchronous music may have on outcomes in overweight and obese women.A twelve-week, randomized-controlled trial was conducted using premenopausal overweight/obese (BMI > 24.9 kg/m2) adult Singapore women (n = 92) divided into three groups (exercise with synchronous, asynchronous, and no music, respectively). Pre-post clinical examinations, anthropometric, and fitness evaluations were conducted. Statistical analyses revealed that physical activity was effective in all groups with music or non-music. International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1198-1205, 2019. The physical demands of soccer combined with the rigor of the competitive season may have a substantial impact on autonomic modulation in field soccer athletes. The number of sudden death cases associated with soccer may be related to the physical training required to maintain performance and fitness, minimal time for recovery, and recurrent game participation. It is possible to identify individuals at risk of cardiovascular events by measuring heart rate variability (HRV), which is an indirect method for assessing autonomic activity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze HRV before …

Daily Total Energy Expenditure Associated With Playing Pokémon Go, Tyler Langford, Veronika Pribyslavska, Vaughn W. Barry
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1179-1186, 2019. Approximately 51% of American adults do not meet weekly physical activity (PA) recommendations. Pokémon Go (PoGo) popularity and its required PA participation shows potential for improved daily PA. The primary aim of this study was to objectively measure daily energy expenditure (DEE) of PoGo players and identify whether DEE differs from non-players. A secondary aim was to assess potential motivational factors to play PoGo. Local Middle Tennessee participants (n= 25) were identified as "players" or "non-players" based on current PoGo usage from August till November 2016. Participants donned a SenseWear …

Assessing Physical Activity Levels And Motivation In An Urban Midwest Private Liberal Arts College, Michael A. Kantor, Ana Freire Ribeiro
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1169-1178, 2019. Recent research indicates that over one third of U.S. adults are obese and 51.6% of adults meet the recommended 2008 physical activity (PA) guidelines. In this context, understanding what makes people engage or not in PA becomes of key importance when attempting to prevent obesity and its related comorbidities. The objective is to assess the PA and motivation levels of students, faculty, and staff in an urban Midwest Private College. Participants completed an anonymous online survey (n=119) on PA and Exercise Motivation. Fitness levels were tested and obtained from wellness assessments (n=74). …

Dim Light Exposure Or Melatonin Ingestion Lowers A Type 2 Diabetic's Blood Glucose Removal Rate: A Single Case, Matthew C. Scott, Arnold G. Nelson, Christopher M. Hearon
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1161-1168, 2019. The purpose of this case study isto compare a Type 2 diabetic's postprandial glucoregulatory ability under two different room lighting conditions. The subject was a 56-year-old physically active male with well controlled blood glucose levels (HbA1c ≤ 6% for 5 y) from a combination of diet, exercise, and medication. Two hours post evening meal (380 kcal, 18 g fat, 44 g carbohydrate, 12 g protein), a 45 g carbohydrate challenge was given, and blood glucose was measured every 30 minutes for 2.5 hours under three conditions: dim light (<50 lux) (DL), bright light (>40000 lux) …50>
