Meditation Education For Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients, Kendall Barton, Vanessa Mikan Phd
Meditation Education For Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients, Kendall Barton, Vanessa Mikan Phd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cardiovascular disease has become the leading public health concern facing our nation. The American Heart Association estimates someone dies every 38 seconds from heart disease. Individuals who experience a severe cardiac incident are often required to undergo rehabilitation as part of their treatment program to improve overall cardiac function. Cardiac rehabilitation provides patients with guided, prescribed exercise programs that encourage the development of healthful behaviors to improve quality of life. Stress has been highly implicated as a contributing factor of cardiovascular disease. Chronic stress causes cardiovascular reactivity, elevations in stress-related hormones and depressed immune function increasing risk of additional cardiac …

Effects Of Weight Status And Sedentary Behavior On Depression Among Young Adults, Xiaoxia Zhang, Xiangli Gu, Samantha Moss
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
It has been a global concern that nearly one-third of young adults have persistent depressive disorder (Ibrahim et al., 2013). Engaging in excessive sedentary behavior coupled with the high prevalence of overweight and obesity among young adults have been known to be high-risk factors for depression (Tychenne et al., 2015). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of weight status (normal weight vs. overweight/obese) and sedentary behavior (< 3 hrs vs. ³ 3 hrs) among male and female young adults, respectively. METHODS: A total of 139 young adults (96 females, 43 males; mean age = 22.44, SD = 3.71) were recruited from one public university in Northern …

Impairments In Cerebral Autoregulation Is Associated With Postural Control In Sports Related Concussion, Abigail L. Reichow, Madison Mccredie, Mathew Stokes, Kathleen R. Bell, Sushmita Purkayastha
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Global and regional deficits in cerebral blood flow are reported with concussions, a major public health concern, with approximately 3.8 million incidences occurring annually in the United States alone. Recent studies have identified an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries in athletes upon return-to-play. Complexity index is a sensitive marker of postural control, with low complexity index indicating a poor physiological adaptation to stress. PURPOSE: Twofold; 1. Examine complexity index and dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) at rest and during physical stress (rhythmic squatting) in collegiate athletes following a concussion in comparison to non-injured controls. 2. Examine the association between complexity …

The Effect Of Acute Consumption Of Overtime Essential Amino Acids Sports Drink On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness In The Older Sedentary Population, Andi Johnson, Grant Wagner, Abraham Gomez, Jerene Yazzie, Klaudia Szych, Matthew A. Barlow Phd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Essential amino acids are necessary for nutrition whether obtained by digestion of proteins or by oral supplementation of amino acids. The elderly experience loss of skeletal muscles and decrease in their strength and function, which can lead to poor quality of life. Increased quantity and quality of proteins stimulates muscle protein synthesis that can help combat this natural aging process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to see if consumption of essential amino acid drink high concentrations of leucin (2040 mg/serving) during exercise will attenuate the condition of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness in the elderly. Also, we aimed to …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 6-17, 2020. The countermovement jump (CMJ) is often used as performance measure and monitoring tool. Traditionally, jump height (JH) is most often studied and reported, but other variables (e.g. force, velocity, power) can also be obtained during CMJ testing on a force plate. The aim of this study was to determine the intra-rater reliability of mechanical variables obtained during CMJs. For this, 41 physically active men (24 ± 4 years) performed four CMJs on a force plate with an interval of 48 to 168 hours (test-retest design). Six variables were analyzed: 1) jump height …

Rate Of Perceived Exertion And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Older Adults With And Without Alzheimer's Disease, Andrea Bevan, Eric Dennis Vidoni, Amber Watts
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(3): 18-35, 2020. Exercise has many benefits for physical and cognitive health in older adults, yet there are many barriers to exercise adherence in this population. Subjective perception of exercise difficulty, or rate of perceived exertion (RPE), may especially be a barrier to exercise in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), due to changes in initiation and motivation that accompany changes in cognition and brain function. RPE is the most commonly used measure of subjective effort in exercise research, yet the relationship between RPE and objective fitness is not fully understood in older adults. A better …
