Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 36. Wallace, Evolution And Providence., Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
One of Alfred Russel Wallace’s most important contributions to thought was his identification of the key role provident behavior assumes in human evolution. In this essay I set out the way this idea influenced his thought process after 1864, and especially how it affected his appreciation of the possible role of spiritualism in evolution.

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(8): 379-393, 2025. College students are a vulnerable population at risk of developing and/or experiencing poor physical fitness and insufficient physical activity (PA) levels, both associated with poor cardiometabolic health. Thus, this study assessed the association of physical fitness and domain-specific PA levels on cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) among college students. A volunteer sample of students enrolled in general health and wellness courses at a large, Northeastern U.S. institution from Spring 2023 – Spring 2024 (n=1418, 69.0% male, 89.9% non-Hispanic White) completed an objective health assessment as part of a required course assignment. CMRFs (e.g., …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(6): 363-378, 2025. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a major health problem worldwide having life-threatening complications causing mortality and a rise in prevalence. Effective treatment strategies are vital for managing diabetes and its associated complications including cardiovascular disease (CVD), nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. This systematic review aims to evaluate effective treatment approaches, focusing on the comparative effects of exercise and GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in T2D rat models. Current pharmacological therapies primarily target glycemic control and insulin sensitivity. However, there is a growing concern in non-traditional approaches that involve exercise and GLP-1 RAs for …

Dark Chocolate Elevates Resting Energy Expenditure In Postmenopausal Women, Aubrey L. Johnson, Michael Webster
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(6): 316-328, 2025. Several recent reports have indicated positive health benefits of consuming (-)-epicatechin-rich cocoa products. Postmenopausal women are predisposed to reduced metabolism due to decreased levels and activity of the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and estradiol. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dark chocolate consumption on resting and exercise metabolism in postmenopausal women. Using a randomized, double-blind design, 26 postmenopausal participants were assigned to a 30-day supplementation with 20-g per day of 72% dark chocolate (DC) or calorically matched white chocolate (WC). Before supplementation, participants underwent two control trials …

Perceived Changes In Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, And Stress During The Pandemic Predict Current Levels Of These Same Variables, Gretchen E. Elsey, Jessica L. Smith-Ricketts, David Kohan, Andrew Lepp, Jacob E. Barkley
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(4): 306-315, 2025. The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions placed on daily life may have negatively impacted overall physical and psychological health as well as health behaviors such as decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behavior. It is important to understand if these potential changes during the pandemic may be predictive of current health behaviors where pandemic-related restrictions are no longer being implemented. This study aimed to assess the relationships between perceived changes in physical activity, sitting, and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic to current measures of these same variables. In April 2022, participants …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 35. Natural Selection By Evolution., Charles H. Smith
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 35. Natural Selection By Evolution., Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823?1913) is remembered, with Charles Darwin, as the co-originator of the concept of evolution by natural selection. But Wallace’s framing of the idea increasingly became one in which natural selection itself was regarded as a law of nature, not a theory per se.

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 34. Did Alfred Russel Wallace’S Chief Assistant From His Expedition To The Malay Archipelago Really Name Himself Ali Wallace?, George Beccaloni, Charles H. Smith Editor
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
In 1907, Thomas Barbour met Alfred Russel Wallace’s former chief assistant Ali on Ternate Island, Indonesia. Ali apparently told him that he had adopted “Wallace” as his second name. This claim has been questioned by historian John van Wyhe and anthropologist Gerrell Drawhorn, probably because it appeared unprecedented. However, this was not an isolated example; in 1872, John Thomas Cockerell recorded that a man from the Aru Islands, Indonesia, employed by Wallace in 1857, along with his eldest son, had similarly adopted “Wallace” as part of their personal names.
Learn By Doing: A Flipped Classroom Approach To Teaching Exercise Testing And Prescription, Zakkoyya H. Lewis
Learn By Doing: A Flipped Classroom Approach To Teaching Exercise Testing And Prescription, Zakkoyya H. Lewis
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
The purpose of this paper is to describe a case-study based flipped classroom approach for teaching exercise testing and prescription. The goal of this approach is to provide students with supervised “real world” experience while also exposing students to diverse populations (e.g. health, age, culture, employment, ability). Students will complete a client interview, conduct a complete fitness assessment included a graded exercise test, and develop an individualized exercise prescription. The flipped classroom is intended to be incorporated into an in-person advanced level course, ideally less than 20 students per section. Completion of an introductory level exercise testing and prescription course …

Sexual Pleasure, Satisfaction, And Activities In Masters Track And Field Athletes, Natalie Mclaurin, Lin-Sheng Chen, Tianyu Wang, Jonas Boecker, Jakub Adamczyk, Jacek Zielinski, Krzysztof Kusy, Joern Rittweger, Hirofumi Tanaka
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sexual function is an important factor for quality of life and has been shown to decrease with aging but increase with exercise training. Masters athletes (MA) demonstrate substantial physical function, reduced disease risks, and enhanced mental outlook, compared with the general population (GP), in spite of their chronological age. Currently, it is unknown whether MA who engage in strenuous exercise on a regular basis possess greater sexuality than their predominantly sedentary peers. PURPOSE: To compare sexual history, desire, and satisfaction in male and female MA with the GP. METHODS: A 52-item survey that evaluated sexual function and history …

A Telehealth-Based, Top-Down Approach To Enhancing Mental Toughness Among Athletics Department Staff, Cameron Blaies, Grant Morgan, Andreas Stamatis
A Telehealth-Based, Top-Down Approach To Enhancing Mental Toughness Among Athletics Department Staff, Cameron Blaies, Grant Morgan, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mental toughness (MT) is a critical factor associated with performance indicators, such as athletic success and mental well-being, encompassing a mindset that is purposeful, efficient, and flexible in responding to challenges. Despite this, there is a lack of research on MT among athletics department staff, a group integral to supporting athlete performance and driving organizational success. From an organizational psychology perspective, a top-down approach (focusing on the MT of leadership and support staff) has the potential to cascade benefits throughout the organization; yet, it remains underutilized in this context, where efforts typically prioritize athletes. Moreover, the distinct nature of student-facing …

Changes In Gait Patterns: Indicators Of Increased Fall Risk Across Diverse Age Groups, Diego Diaz-Vega, Heontae Kim, Ho Han, Jungyu Lee, Fatima Siddiqua
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Gait patterns, including measures such as velocity, step length differential, and various temporal aspects of the gait cycle, are essential indicators of an individual's mobility and balance. With aging, changes in these gait metrics are commonly observed and are closely linked to an increased risk of falls. However, detailed evidence on gait changes across different age groups remains limited, particularly in healthy adults. PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study is to identify key gait metrics and evaluate their potential as indicators of increased fall risk across diverse age groups. METHODS: A total of 252 healthy adults aged …

Developing An Evidence-Based Model For Healthy Stride Length Prediction, Jungyu Lee, Ho Han, Heontae Kim, Diego Diaz-Vega
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Stride length is a vital health indicator, reflecting physical fitness and mobility status. Although several existing formulas aim to estimate stride length, many are limited by a lack of scientific validation, especially among healthy, active adults. This study addresses these limitations by developing a validated model based on healthy adults without known mobility impairments, aiming to establish a more accurate, clinically useful standard for stride length estimation. The model provides a reference range for healthy stride length, usable as a tool to identify individuals at risk of mobility issues. PURPOSE: To develop an evidence-based model for predicting stride length …

Equipping Exercise Science Students With Motivational Interviewing Skills For Real-World Client Interactions, Jessica A. Albers
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a widely recognized communication technique originally developed to treat addictive behaviors. Its application has expanded to various health domains, including exercise science, where it is used to enhance client motivation and adherence to health behaviors. However, despite its proven efficacy, exercise science students often struggle to see the relevance of MI to their future careers, particularly outside of roles focused on health coaching. This teaching and learning resource aims to bridge the gap between MI theory and its practical application for exercise science students. This resource aims to equip students with the communication tools necessary for …
