The prevalence of tattoos has increased over the years, and, correspondingly, wearable technology, especially heart rate wearables. The signal from the heart rate wearables may be affected by the permanent ink on the skin because of previous validation studies excluding people with tattoos. PURPOSE: Examine the validity of heart rate monitors on people with arm tattoos. METHODS: 20 participants were recruited for this study. INTRODUCTION: The number of adults who receive insufficient sleep is progressively increasing, impacting the established relationship between sleep and metabolic function. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of acute sleep reduction on metabolic variables at rest and during aerobic exercise. METHODS: Healthy, active adults (n=11; 26.4±5.4 yr; 45% female) were screened to ensure eligibility (i.e., meeting the CDC’s sleep recommendations of 7-9hr/night, apparently healthy, recreationally active, and non-smoking), characterize body composition via DXA and measure maximal cardiovascular capacity (VO2max). Circadian rhythms are highly conserved across tissues and play an important role in regulating how the heart responds to physiological and pathological stress. Exercise is known to be cardioprotective, yet the impact of exercise timing on molecular signaling is still being explored. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an exercise-induced cytokine which has been shown to be important to cardioprotection and metabolism. It is currently unknown how exercise timing modulates the IL-6 signaling pathway in the heart.

Citrulline malate (CM) is an ergogenic aid hypothesized to improve exercise performance by promoting nitric oxide (NO) production resulting in increased vasodilation, blood flow, and oxygen and nutrient delivery to working muscles. Dietary carotenoids can be measured in the skin and can serve as a biomarker of fruit and vegetable intake. General fatigue impacts both physiological and neuromuscular systems, leading to mechanical consequences in the musculoskeletal system that manifest as alterations and variability in gait patterns. The Bruce Protocol ends at maximal exertion, providing a window to study fatigue-linked gait deviations. Purpose: To investigate whether step-by-step gait during the terminal stages of the Bruce Protocol departs from a subject’s normal pattern. Methods: 24 Division I athletes completed the Bruce Protocol while spatiotemporal gait parameters were captured with OptoGait. PURPOSE:

Postprandial hyperglycemia contributes to the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. While post-meal physical activity (PA) is known to reduce blood glucose (BG), it remains unclear whether certain modes of PA are more effective than others when matched for energy expenditure. This study aims to compare the BG-attenuating effects of two energetically equivalent postprandial modes of PA.

METHODS:

Eleven healthy adults completed three randomized sessions, consisting of a 75g oral glucose challenge and either walking, stepping, or rest. Each session’s PA lasted 15 minutes and occurred between 45–60 minutes post-ingestion, when BG typically peaks. During PA both …

Balancing performance demands with self-care is essential for maintaining psychological health. Mental toughness (MT) and self-compassion (SC) are often framed as opposing constructs; however, athlete data suggest mindfulness (MF) may integrate them. Whether this extends to non-athlete adults is unclear. PURPOSE: To test whether MF mediates the MT–SC relationship in a non-athlete population. An officer’s motivation (desire to exercise) and self-efficacy (belief in ability to exercise) could affect whether they exercise and predict resulting fitness. Data from 60 officers (48 men, 12 women) were analyzed. Motivation (amotivation, external, introjected, identified, integrated, and intrinsic regulation) was measured via the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire. Following an overnight fast, body composition was assessed, and resting measurements were recorded. International Journal of Exercise Science 18(6): 1030-1046, 2025. Low energy availability (LEA) results in numerous health and performance decrements. While a high prevalence of LEA and sleep disturbance has been observed in male Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, no data exists in females. This study aimed to determine LEA prevalence, dietary habits, and sleep quantity and quality in female U.S. ROTC cadets. Following an overnight fast, ten cadets (22±4 yrs, 166.0±6.1 cm, 67.1±9.1 kg, 26.1±6.2% body fat, 49.2±4.8 kg fat-free mass (FFM)) had their body composition and resting metabolic rate measured.
