Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets regularly undergo highly stressful and physically demanding training, making adequate nutrition knowledge and eating habits essential for optimal health and physical performance. However, there is a paucity of data on ROTC cadets’ general and sports nutrition knowledge. PURPOSE: We evaluated ROTC cadets' general and sports nutrition knowledge. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were obtained from 206 ROTC cadets regarding sports performance and nutrition supplementation knowledge via the validated paper-based questionnaire, Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire for Athletes (NKQA). Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a widely recognized communication technique originally developed to treat addictive behaviors. Its application has expanded to various health domains, including exercise science, where it is used to enhance client motivation and adherence to health behaviors. However, despite its proven efficacy, exercise science students often struggle to see the relevance of MI to their future careers, particularly outside of roles focused on health coaching. International Journal of Exercise Science 18(6): 215-224, 2025. Carbohydrate mouth rinse (CMR) is suggested to improve aerobic, anaerobic, and skill-related performance. The current study examined the influence of CMR on soccer-specific skills in 13 faster collegiate female soccer players. Athletes completed a control (CON) and two counterbalanced, double-blind experimental sessions. Sessions consisted of a warm-up, high-intensity soccer practice, followed by four soccer-specific skill tests. During the experimental sessions participants rinsed with a color-and-taste-matched CMR or placebo (PLA) solution before the skill tests. In addition to maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), the Lactate Threshold (LT) is the other major determinant of aerobic exercise performance. This study examined the effects of the menstrual cycle (MC) phase on the LT in untrained females. Eight females and 8 males completed a LT test on a cycle ergometer. The tests were performed across three MC phases: early follicular (EF; menses), ovulatory (O), and mid-luteal (ML). Conventional protocols for assessing physical attributes such as muscle function in this population have unique boundaries such as expensive testing equipment and procedures not specific to wheelchair propulsion. Compression garments, utilized in sports and exercise for performance enhancement and recovery, lack sufficient well-controlled studies to overcome any potential placebo effect. Therefore, we tested whether wearing compressive pantyhose (CP) during the Ballet-specific aerobic fitness test (BAFT) would influence performance, recovery, physiological, and perceptual indicators. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a flexible, trainee-driven training program in improving concurrent training outcomes for individuals training remotely. The study employed a repeated-measures, parallel group design with 18 participants randomized into either a control group with fixed workouts or an experimental group with flexible workout selection based on perceived readiness. Participants were recreationally trained at baseline. Over a 16-week period, both groups completed assessments of strength and endurance, including deadlift, push-ups, and a two-mile run. Spider beetles are small, often flightless insects that occur in hyperarid environments around the world. They exhibit interesting morphology and behavior that allows them to conserve water they obtain from plant material, dung, and other detritus. One hyperarid region in which they are found is the Pacific coast of Perú and northern Chile. The Sechura Desert, Peruvian Coastal Desert, and Atacama Desert make up the arid coast where spider beetles occur from north to south. Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, utilizes a Type IV secretion system (T4SS) to transport effector proteins into host cells. This bacterium is said to have over 300 effector proteins. Among these, the Ceg10 effector protein had remained uncharacterized, despite evidence suggesting the importance of bacterial effector proteins in the host-pathogen interaction. This study aimed to perform a structural and functional characterization of Ceg10 through transcriptomic, bioinformatics, and molecular analyses. Transcriptomic profiling of HEK 293T cells expressing Ceg10 revealed significant differential gene expression, with approximately 20 upregulated genes, including leucine-rich repeat, as well as other downregulated genes. …

This study aimed to establish if a relationship existed between parenting stress and their child’s depression, anxiety and somatization, referred to as negative affect. Alongside establishing this relationship, this study investigated if parent negative talk, as seen in Parent-Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT) sessions, affected that relationship. It was hypothesized that parenting stress would negatively impact their children’s negative affect, and that parenting stress would lead to increased negative talk towards their children, in turn negatively impacting their children’s negative affect. The obesity epidemic, referred to as "globesity" by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, remains a critical global health issue with escalating prevalence rates. In 2022, approximately 2.5 billion adults worldwide were overweight, with 890 million classified as obese, highlighting a significant health burden and economic impact. By 2030, projections suggest over one billion individuals globally will be affected by obesity. In the United States, where more than 40% of adults are obese, healthcare costs attributed to obesity-related illnesses exceed $173 billion annually.

Yet, the validity of wrist-worn devices for measuring average/maximal heart rate (HR) and estimating energy expenditure (EE) during outdoor hiking with and without trekking poles is unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the concurrent validity of identical Garmin Instinct devices to record valid measures of average and maximal HR as well as estimated EE during outdoor hiking with no poles, 1 or 2 trekking poles. The therapeutic effects of self-paced walking on mood enhancement are well-documented; yet, existing literature predominantly examines laboratory-based protocols that fail to incorporate auditory stimuli as a potential modulator of mood states. PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of various auditory inputs on mood states during a 30-minute bout of self-paced walking. METHODS: A randomized controlled crossover design was employed (n = 24; 9 males; Mage: 23.04).
