Critical Analysis Of The Kenyan Healthcare System And Models For Improvement, Justin Wellum
Critical Analysis Of The Kenyan Healthcare System And Models For Improvement, Justin Wellum
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Global epidemics such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS plague developing countries in Africa. International aid has been given to these countries from public and private organizations in an effort to eradicate these health crises. My research focuses on Kenya as a model for assessing the current state of health care in these developing countries. The effectiveness of Kenya’s health care system was investigated at every level, including central, provincial, district, and rural, by visiting the country and performing specific research. Based on my research, I propose a model that I believe Kenya or any African developing country could adopt to …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Working Conditions: The Difference Between Static And Improving Schools In Kentucky, Amy Bryant Allen
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to identify the changes concerning teachers’ perceptions of working conditions within Kentucky’s District 180 Priority Schools. The District 180 Priority Schools comprises of 41 secondary schools that ranked in the bottom fifth percentile on the Kentucky School Report Card. Schools were divided into two categories, static or improving, based upon student achievement changes from 2009 until 2013. The study utilized results from the 2011 and 2013 TELL Kentucky Survey to determine whether changes in teachers’ perceptions of working conditions were statistically significant from 2011 to 2013 in the areas of instructional time, availability …

Level Of Uv-B Radiation Influences The Effects Of Glyphosate-Based Herbicide On Fitness Of The Spotted Salamander, Nicholas A. Levis
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Numerous causes have been implicated in contributing to amphibian population declines since the 1980's, with habitat modification, ultraviolet radiation (UV-B) and environmental contaminants (such as glyphosate-based herbicide) being among the most common. This study identifies the effects of a generic glyphosate-based herbicide (GLY- 4 Plus) on mortality, immune function, body condition, and morphological plasticity of larvae of the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) under conditions that reflect open and closed canopy light regimes. Larval salamander responses to glyphosate-based herbicide varied depending on UV-B conditions. In general, it appears that an open canopy (i.e. greater UV-B exposure) may confer fitness benefits. In …

This quantitative descriptive study was designed to analyze levels of acculturative stress and sociocultural adaptation among international students at a non-metropolitan university in the U.S. in relation to college satisfaction and certain demographic characteristics. Surveys were used to measure international students’ levels of acculturative stress, sociocultural adaptation, including five subscales of sociocultural adaptation, and college satisfaction (N = 413). Demographic questions included gender, age, country of origin, length of stay in the U.S., degree level, and English language comfort. Results indicated a negative correlation between students’ levels of sociocultural adaptation and acculturative stress. In particular, increased competency among the five …
Tetracyclines In Swine Waste, Natalie Kaye Jones
Tetracyclines In Swine Waste, Natalie Kaye Jones
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Antibiotics are added to animal feeds as prophylactic agents and to encourage weight gain in livestock. However, there is concern that the widespread use of antibiotics in animal agriculture encourages for the selection of resistance genes and has contributed to the rise of multiply antibiotic resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria. For this reason, there is interest in quantifying antibiotics in environmental samples. The determination of three antibiotics in swine waste, namely chlortetracycline, tetracycline and oxytetracycline, using LC-MS with electrospray ionization is presented here in. Antibiotics from swine waste were quantified across the lifespan of the swine. Trends were present in …
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explain Physical Activity Among College Students, Ese B. Aghenta
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The health benefits of physical activity include improved cardiovascular health, reduced rates of diabetes and other metabolic diseases, weight maintenance and improved bone and mental health (United States Department Health & Human Services (2008). According to the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA, 2013), only 20.0% of college students in the United States meet this recommendation. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) attempts to explain the intention to perform behaviors that are not under an individual’s complete volitional control and has been highly utilized in predicting intention and performance of physical activity (Courneya, Nigg & Estabrooks, 1998). …

Avoiding The Freshman 15, Samuel Earls, Robin Hume
Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
Students face many challenges as they transition into college. One of the most publicly-known issues is the “Freshman Fifteen,” which refers to the average amount of weight that college freshmen are rumored to gain. Students in college often encounter all-you-can-eat buffets, a culture rife with alcohol consumption, an increased level of stress from classes, and other environmental factors that can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle if not properly addressed. This video pamphlet aims to combat the “Freshman Fifteen,” or in general an unhealthy lifestyle at college, by providing pertinent nutritional information and exercise tips. The accompanying brochure provides additional tips …

Effect Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Lipoprotein Profile And Particle Size In Hispanic Women, Sarah E. Deemer, Vic Ben-Ezra, Matthew S. Hickey, George A. King, Christopher L. Melby
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The effect of increased Ω3 fatty acids on lipoprotein sub-fractions has not been well studied in Hispanic women, a group with a high prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this randomized, placebo-controlled trial was to examine the effect of a 90-day (90D) combined EPA+DHA supplementation on lipoprotein profiles of Hispanic women. Twenty-seven non-diabetic women were randomly assigned to the Ω3 group (n=17, 1.9 g/day EPA+DHA) or the placebo group (n=10, 2 g/day oleic acid). At baseline (0D) and 90D a fasting blood sample was drawn for determination of lipoprotein profile and lipoprotein particle sub-fractions. For the Ω3 …

ABSTRACT
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are popular with smokers looking for a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes. E-cigs utilize a battery, activated on inhalation, to heat propylene glycol-suspended nicotine which is inhaled as vapor, and which does not include harmful poisons found in conventional cigarettes. Although the health claims of e-cigs continue to be debated, the effects of nicotine delivered as vapor on the cardiovascular system have not been studied. Because nicotine is a sympathomemetic agent, we tested the hypothesis that e-cigs would increase arterial pressure and protect against challenges associated with upright posture. Ten non-smoking subjects (5 male) participated in …

ABSTRACT
Whole body energy expenditure (i.e., RMR) increases during acute cold exposure. Whether this increase in energy expenditure persists in the post-cold term in humans due to non-shivering thermogenesis has not yet been evaluated. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that RMR would be different directly following acute cold exposure. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle mass and strength play critical roles in quality of life, and significant muscle atrophy contributes to reduced function and can exacerbate some disease states. It is well-known that persistent reductions of mechanical loading in skeletal muscle result in degeneration. Generally, reductions of muscle protein synthesis are, at least in part, a major culprit with muscle loss under these conditions, and numerous countermeasures such as exercise and nutritional supplements, known to stimulate protein synthesis have been designed to maintain muscle mass under those conditions. Amino acid supplementation, particularly with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), has been suggested as a countermeasure …
