Adherence To Exercise Prescription And Improvements In The Clinical And Vascular Health Of African Americans, Dianne Babbitt
Adherence To Exercise Prescription And Improvements In The Clinical And Vascular Health Of African Americans, Dianne Babbitt
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(2): 246-257, 2017. Improvements in indices of vascular health and endothelial function have been inversely associated with hypertension, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (e.g., myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure), renal failure, and mortality. Aerobic exercise training (AEXT) has been positively associated with improvements in clinical health values, as well as vascular health biomarkers, and endothelial function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether measures of exercise adherence were related to clinical outcome measures and indices of vascular health subsequent to a 6-month AEXT intervention in a middle-to-older aged African American cohort. …

Birth Plan Non-Adherence: Impact On Birth Satisfaction, Interventions And Perceived Birth Trauma, Mollie Berger
Student Research Conference Select Presentations
Birth plans help to empower women in their birth decisions and create a means to communicate with the healthcare providers prior to going into labor. Birth plans play a distinct role in overall birth satisfaction, which in turn has an impact of maternal well-being and bonding with the infant. When changes are made to birth plans, especially without the mother’s consent, overall birth satisfaction may decrease and the risk of developing post- birth traumatic symptoms may increase. An online survey of childbirth experiences was administered to more than 2000 women. Birth satisfaction and post-birth traumatic symptoms were compared between women …

Couples in long-distance dating relationships (LDDRs) must determine how to best communicate with one another to maintain their relationship without the advantage of being geographically close. Fortunately, with advances in technology, individuals in LDDRs have multiple options regarding how they choose to communicate with their relational partner. These individuals may utilize more traditional modes, such as letter writing or phone calls, or more modern modes, such as text messaging or social media. However, not all of these communication modes may allow for satisfying communication or communication that benefits the relationship. Therefore, this study investigates how the frequency of use of …

The Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Vo2max And 1.5 Mile Run Performance, William Ursprung, John D. Smith
The Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Vo2max And 1.5 Mile Run Performance, William Ursprung, John D. Smith
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a training strategy involving the use of cuffs or wraps placed around a limb during exercise to maintain arterial inflow to the muscle while preventing venous outflow. Blood flow restriction training with resistance has been shown to improve muscular power, sprinting speed, strength, hypertrophy and endurance. Non-resistance training methods using BFR, such as walking, may increase strength and hypertrophy however the effects on aerobic capacity are less uncertain and the research in this area is limited. Purpose: to evaluate the effects of three weeks of BFR walk training on VO2max, 1.5 …

Quantification Method Of P2x3 Receptors In Rat Drg Neurons: Western Blotting, Will R. Selman, Michelle L. Harrison, Audrey J. Stone
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle contractions are known to evoke pressor and cardioaccelerator responses in part by stimulating P2X3 receptors found on the peripheral endings of afferents. In diabetic patients, this pressor response is exaggerated. What is currently not known is whether P2X3 receptors play a role in evoking this exaggerated response. PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to quantify P2X3 receptors in the L4 and L5 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in both healthy and type 1 diabetic rats using western blot analysis. METHODS: We injected 50 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) or the vehicle (CTL) i.p in fasted female and male …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Diaphragm Muscle Precedes The Cachectic Phenotype In Llc Tumor-Bearing Mice., Conner A. Benson, David E. Lee, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Tyrone A. Washington, Nicholas P. Greene, Michael P. Wiggs
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The defining feature of cancer cachexia is extensive weight loss and skeletal muscle atrophy. It is clinically important because cachexia reduces patient survival, results in functional impairment, and is estimated to be directly responsible for 20-40% of cancer deaths. Unfortunately, no clinical therapy exists and therefore, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms responsible for rapid muscle wasting. Compared to limb muscles, the diaphragm is relatively understudied in cancer cachexia, but is likely to be adversely affected because cachexia is a systemic disease. Wasting of the primary inspiratory muscle may result in difficulty breathing and inability to adjust minute …

Pressor And Cardioaccelerator Responses To Atp And Lactic Acid In Type 1 Diabetic Rats, Yu Huo, Audrey Stone
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle contraction produces metabolites which stimulate group III and IV muscle afferents and thereby evokes a reflexive increase in sympathetic activity, namely the metaboreflex. ATP and lactic acid are among these metabolites and both play a role in evoking an exaggerated exercise pressor reflex in cardiovascular related diseases. It is not known, however, if ATP and/or lactic acid evoke(s) an exaggerated metaboreflex in type 1 diabetes. PURPOSE: To determine the pressor and cardioaccelerator responses to intra-arterial injections of ATP and lactic into the hindlimb vasculature of type 1 diabetic rats. METHODS: We injected either Streptozotocin (STZ) or …

Effects Of Hypohydration On Muscular Performance In Females: An Ongoing Study, Joshua J. Gann, Thomas L. Andre, Paul S. Hwang, Brooke L. Roemer, Darryn S. Willoughby
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Dehydration (~3%) has been shown to negatively affect anaerobic performance. A majority of this research has been conducted using male participants. Like males, females have been shown to underestimate sweat loss, which could lead to insufficient rehydration and thus hypohydration. Additionally, due to differences in thermoregulation, it is possible that females respond to hypohydration differently than males. To date, no research has examined the effects of previous night dehydration on muscular performance in females. PURPOSE: The purpose of this ongoing study was to determine the effects of previous night dehydration on muscular strength, muscular endurance, lower body power, and …

Exercise Pressor Reflex In Type 1 Diabetic Rats Is Not Different Between Sexes, Ann-Katrin Grotle, Audrey J. Stone
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated with complications such as autonomic and peripheral neuropathy. The pathophysiology and prevalence of cardiovascular disease differ between sexes. Diabetic patients have an exaggerated pressor and sympathetic response to exercise compared to healthy individuals, which may increase the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke during physical activity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the cardioaccelerator and pressor responses to static contraction and tendon stretch differ between sexes in type 1 diabetic (T1DM) rats. METHODS: We injected 50 mg/kg Streptozotocin (STZ) or the vehicle …
