Type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence in the Rio Grande Valley is ~27% versus the 9% national average. Simply having a family history (FH+) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) increases T2D prevalence by ~40 over those with no family history (FH-). We have shown that FH+ display early markers of cardiometabolic impairment vs FH-, such as blunted microvascular reactivity, and impaired metabolic flexibility. What is not yet known is the degree to which environment vs genetics may contribute to these impairments. PURPOSE: This pilot study seeks to examine normal dietary patterns between FH groups to identify potential patterns in macro- and …

A Proposed Nanocomposite Hydrogel For Promoting Reinnervation Following Volumetric Muscle Loss, Sara Peper, Kamal Awad, Neelam Ahuja, Thy Vo, Marco Brotto, Venu Varanasi
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle possesses an innate capacity for regeneration following damage, however, severe injuries resulting in significant tissue loss, categorized as volumetric muscle loss (VML) can overwhelm endogenous repair mechanisms. Recent evidence suggests that nanocomposite silica-based hydrogels (NC gels) possess rheological properties necessary for precise 3D bioprinting and promote secretion of endogenous neurotrophic factors for tissue repair. A shear behavior index between 0.2-0.6 is indicative of shear thinning behavior and describes the ability of a bioink to flow under a certain amount of shear stress. Bioinks displaying shear thinning behavior have pseudoplasticity, an essential property of muscle viscoelasticity, and are optimal …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Ghrelin has recently become a hormone of interest in the fight against type two diabetes. Ghrelin is found in two forms (acylated vs. unacylated), with the acylated form of ghrelin being cited as diabetogenic purportedly due to its interaction with growth hormone secretion. Both the Acylated Ghrelin (AG) and Unacylated Ghrelin (UAG) forms are reported to have metabolic functions within skeletal muscle, despite having little expression of the only known ghrelin receptor known as the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (ghsr-1a). The investigation into AG and UAG on skeletal muscle in type 2 diabetes (T2D) shows promise; however, the measures …

Regular exercise can improve physical fitness, functional performance, and quality of life in men with prostate cancer (PCa); however, few men with PCa meet national physical activity guidelines. Structured, home-based exercise programs may bridge this gap and increase physical activity in men with PCa. PURPOSE: This pilot study aimed to investigate the impact of a home-based exercise program on cytokines associated with tumor progression in men with PCa. METHODS: A single group, self-controlled study design was used. Fifteen men with PCa under active surveillance were recruited to complete 24 weeks of a home-based exercise program, combining aerobic and …

Health risks of a sedentary lifestyle for children, defined as being less than 5,000 steps per day, include unfavorable indicators of body composition and cardio-metabolic risk. Results of school-based physical activity interventions to increase physical activity levels have been mixed. However, mentorship programs have shown promise. Previous mentorship programs have relied on peer-to-peer mentorships, with participants being of a similar age group. College mentors present an alternative and low-cost resource that may also provide positive results, yet have been largely ignored in research studies to date. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a …
