Alternative Field Test For Wingate Test Of Anaerobic Capacity, Lucia S. Creeden, Kyle Biggerstaff
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The 30-s Wingate Anaerobic Power Test (WAPT) has been the gold standard for assessing an individual’s anaerobic power since its development, but it requires expensive equipment. An alternative test, called the Anaerobic Power Run Test (APRT), has been developed as a simple method to predict anaerobic power. PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine if there is a relationship between the anaerobic capacity determined by a 30-s WAPT and the time to complete the APRT. Additionally, this study will attempt to predict anaerobic capacity based on the time to complete the APRT. METHODS: Participants (8 females, 4 males) between the …

Vitamin D Association With Renal Health And Filtration In Healthy Individuals Free Of Cardiometabolic Diseases: A Pilot Study, Meena K. Meiyyappan, Ricardo Torres, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Keri Collins, Bayley Humphrey, Andrew Gallucci, Brent Dragoo, Leslee Funderburk, Panagiotis Koutakis, Jeff S. Forsse
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The effect of vitamin D (VITD) on bone, muscle, and over health is well know in renal failure and chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the influence of VITD on renal health and filtration (RHF) in healthy individuals is unclear. Currently, only serum creatinine concentration (sCr) methods are used to assess renal status in health individuals. However, newer biomarkers like serum Cystatin C (CyC) and urine epidermal growth factor (uEGF) show promise in evaluating baseline RHF. The impact of Vitamin D on filtration in healthy individuals of various ages is still unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the impact of VITD on RHF …

Effects Of Volitional Preemptive Abdominal Contraction On Shoulder Proprioception Following Shoulder Muscle Fatigue, Ramonica Scott, Troy Hooper, Phil Sizer Pt, Phd, C. Roger James, J. Paul Fikes, Steven Sawyer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The abdominal bracing maneuver, a volitional preemptive abdominal contraction (VPAC) strategy, is potentially beneficial to shoulder exercise performance. It is unclear how VPAC use affects shoulder function, including proprioception and shoulder muscle function following shoulder muscle fatigue caused by upper extremity dominant sports movements. Discovering methods that reduce its effects on shoulder proprioception and shoulder muscle function is important for clinical practice in orthopedic rehabilitation. PURPOSE: To identify VPAC effects on shoulder proprioception abilities and to identify VPAC effects on shoulder muscle electromyographic amplitudes, during seated proprioception trials, both with and without muscle fatigue present. METHODS: Thirty-nine participants …

Footwear's Influence On Positional Parameters In The Static Posture Of Children, Megan E. Perkins, Bryon C. Applequist
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In early childhood, a child’s motor control is rapidly evolving. Upright posture is being supported through a combination of sensory factors that are influenced by the child’s developing neuromuscular system.1 Footwear has the ability to create a drastic impact on postural stability during this key time in a child’s life. In fact, certain types of footwear may actually be detrimental to the child’s normal development of proprioceptive abilities, compared to being able to feel their natural environment while barefoot. Positional parameters of static posture can be used to evaluate the effects of footwear on postural control.2 PURPOSE: The …
A Single 10-Minute Vape Exposure Alters Ventilation In Adult Rats, Mila Fisher, Jennifer A. Stokes
A Single 10-Minute Vape Exposure Alters Ventilation In Adult Rats, Mila Fisher, Jennifer A. Stokes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
E-cigarettes, also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are an alternative to the traditional cigarette. ENDS function using a heating device (e.g. “vape pen”, such as JUUL) to heat liquids containing nicotine and other chemicals. Recent research in humans and animal models suggests that acute exposure (5 to 60 minutes) to e-cigarette vapor increases airway resistance and proinflammatory cytokine presence in lung tissue. These acute effects may lead to long term functional changes in the lung and tissue changes at the respiratory membrane. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an acute 10-minute …

Preliminary Findings: Relationship Between Igg-Based Food Elimination And Whole-Body Inflammation, Benjamin C. Garza, Terah Ege, Fabio Cattolico, Brittanie L. Lockard
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
High levels of whole-body inflammation are associated with increased risk of poor health outcomes and chronic disease. Inflammatory symptoms (e.g., digestive, psychological, and whole-body irritation) are commonly addressed via food elimination diets, yet individual differences may exist for persons with unique immunoglobulin-G (IgG) mediated food sensitivities. Few studies have examined IgG food sensitivities using an understood biomarker of inflammation, high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP). Identification of IgG mediated food sensitivities may be a feasible means for targeted-food elimination seeking to address inflammatory symptoms. PURPOSE: To assess measurable changes in primary outcomes, hsCRP and inflammatory symptomology, within subjects following an IgG …

The Usage Of Skeletal Muscle Oxygenation And Heart Rate Variability As Predictors Of Aerobic Fitness., Ricardo Torres, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Catherine Lowry, Chris Wynveen, Panagiotis Koutakis, Jeff S. Forsse
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Heart rate variability (HRV) is used to assess the autonomic nervous system’s (ANS) activity on the heart, while skeletal muscle oxygenation (SmO2) measures how well muscles uptake oxygen from the blood. Both measurements have demonstrated strong associations with cardiorespiratory fitness and are altered with increased exercise workloads. Both have been used to assess athletic performance. While the gold standard for assessing cardiorespiratory fitness is VO2 max testing, several situations preclude the usage of a true VO2 max. Purpose: To determine if HRV and SmO2 possess predictive qualities to accurately assess cardiorespiratory fitness levels. Methods: Thirty-six healthy fit individuals (n = …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
During resistance training (RT) exercises, full range of motion (fROM) is traditionally promoted by exercise training professionals. Based on recent publications, it is reported that partial range of motion (pROM) during RT may have similar muscle growth responses as fROM. There are limited investigations examining the acute effects of ROM during a RT bout on blood lactate (BLa), muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2), and total hemoglobin content (tHb) that may help drive mechanistic investigations. PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effects of different ROMs during flat (FB) and incline (IB) barbell bench press exercises on BLa, SmO …

Selective Inhibition Of Ribosomal Biogenesis Over Cap-Dependent Translation By Rapamycin In L6 Myotubes, Selina Uranga, James D. Fluckey
Selective Inhibition Of Ribosomal Biogenesis Over Cap-Dependent Translation By Rapamycin In L6 Myotubes, Selina Uranga, James D. Fluckey
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The mechanistic target of rapamycin, or mTOR, lies at the center of skeletal muscle anabolic regulation. The mTOR kinase has at least two complexes that aide in carrying out responses to anabolic signals. Complex 1 (mTORC1) activation leads to cap-dependent translation and ribosomal biogenesis via phosphorylation of its two downstream targets 4EBP1 and P70S6K respectively. mTORC1 is inhibited by rapamycin while mTORC2 is not; however, cap-dependent translation via mTORC1 may still occur under rapamycin inhibition. PURPOSE: To identify timing and mechanistic pathway by which selective skeletal muscle anabolism continues in the presence of rapamycin inhibition. METHODS: Murine L6 …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease characterized by demyelination in the central nervous system which disproportionately impacts females. Previous studies suggest MS-related exercise intolerance may be due to abnormal control of arterial blood pressure (BP) via the skeletal muscle metaboreflex. However, few studies have been performed and equivocal results reported. Discontinuity in prior data may be due to limited perturbation of metaboreflex activation using only low and moderate intensity exercise. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that females with MS have blunted BP and sympathetic responses to graded static handgrip (HG) exercise and isolated …

Hispanic Americans (HA) are the fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States, with disproportionately higher incidence of obesity, hyperlipidemia and type 2 diabetes compared to their non-Hispanic white (NHW) counterparts. As such, the risk of cardiovascular complications is significantly higher in this population, while the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Alterations in vascular function occur early in cardiovascular diseases and have not been comprehensively studied in the HA population. Previous studies have demonstrated higher flow-mediated dilation (FMD, an index of resting vascular function) in young HA compared to NHW women. However, whether these differences in vasodilation also occur in …
