Identifying Predictors Of Fat Oxidation In Response To Exercise Prescribed According To Relative And Metabolic Intensities, Athrva Deshpande, Todd Astorino Ph.D
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Capacity for fat oxidation (FOx) is related to endurance performance and metabolic health. Chrzanowksi-Smith et al. (2021) revealed that maximal O2 consumption (VO2max), resting FOx, and physical activity level significantly predict maximal fat oxidation. PURPOSE: To identify predictors of the metabolic response to endurance exercise. METHODS: Active, non-obese men and women (N = 36, age and VO2max = 24 ± 4 yr and 2.8 ± 0.8 L/min) underwent 3 sessions of cycling separated by 3 – 7 days. All bouts were performed at the same time of day within participants. Initially, body fat and fat-free …

Comparing Body Composition Measures In Us Army Soldiers, Kishani Kirubaharan-Smith, James R. Bagley, Kent A. Lorenz, Maria J. Veri
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The United States (US) Army currently uses circumference measurements (with body mass index, BMI) to estimate body fat (BF) composition in soldiers. While this current system is easy to administer, it has been shown to have poor validity compared to other modern body composition assessment techniques, such as air displacement plethysmography (BodPod). Specifically, circumference/BMI measures do not account for different body types, especially among female soldiers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare 1) body composition measures in US Army Soldiers (BF% via circumferences vs BodPod) and 2) differences in BF% between males and females. We hypothesized there would be significant …

Anti-Cachexia Effect Of Polymorphonuclear Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Depletion Therapy Is Not Present In Tumor-Bearing Mice Lacking T And B Cells, Hailey K. Gorman, Jonathan Specht, Michael Deyhle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Polymorphonuclear (PMN) Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), are associated with poor cancer prognosis, partly due to their immunosuppressive effects on anti-cancer immunity. Cancer cachexia, characterized by debilitating skeletal muscle wasting, further reduces patient survival. Previously, antibody-mediated (anti-Ly6G) depletion of PMN-MDSCs attenuated skeletal muscle loss in mouse model of cancer cachexia. The mechanism by which PMN-MDSCs contribute to cachexia is unclear. Given the role that PMN-MDSCs play in supporting cancer disease progression depends on inhibiting anti-cancer adaptive immunity, we tested if the beneficial effects of PMN-MDSCs depletion on cachexia depend on the presence of adaptive immune cells. PURPOSE: We hypothesize that the …

Tarnopolsky et al. (1990) showed significantly higher fat oxidation (FOx) in women versus men during endurance exercise, likely due to their higher concentrations of estrogen and type I muscle fibers. Prior studies support this stance (Venables et al. 2000), yet Wallis et al. (2006) showed no effect of sex on the metabolic response to exercise. PURPOSE: To compare substrate metabolism between men and women during submaximal exercise prescribed using metabolic (percent ventilatory threshold, %VT) and relative (percent maximal heart rate, %HRmax) intensities. METHODS: Healthy, non-obese men (n = 23) and women (n = 13) (age, % fat, and VO2 …

Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Early detection and treatment is important in cardiovascular disease because arteries are often occluded by 75% or more before symptoms become apparent. Exercise blood pressure has been shown to be predictive of future cardiovascular disease independent of resting blood pressure. However, many factors affecting exercise blood pressure need to be further investigated and described before exercise blood pressure can become a common practice. PURPOSE: To investigate how exercise intensity and fitness influence the blood pressure response in hypertensive and normotensive individuals. We hypothesized that hypertensive participants would have greater increases in exercise blood pressure than normotensive subjects during a …

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(6): 1461-1477, 2024. The purpose was to summarize the studies examining knee strength in young athletes and provide valuable insights into the magnitude of changes in knee flexion and extension strength during the transition from pre-puberty to puberty among male and female athletes. The literature search was conducted through Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science. Cohen’s effect size (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed using a random effects model. While comparing males and females, as well as pre-puberty and puberty stages, we conducted subgroup analyses for pre-puberty versus puberty and for males …

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(2): 1444-1460, 2024. The purpose of this study was to compare changes in circulating microRNAs -126 (c-miR-126) and -222 (c-miR-222) following acute serial concurrent exercise (SCE) and integrated concurrent exercise (ICE) sessions among young, sedentary adults. Ten males and 9 females completed the study procedures. For SCE, participants performed resistance exercise (RE) followed by aerobic exercise (AE), without mixing the two. For ICE, participants performed a brief bout of AE before each set of RE. Blood was collected before, immediately after (IP), and 1 h (1HR) after each exercise session. Expression of c-miR-126 significantly increased …
