Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume Apr 1998

Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because of the relationship between speech and language delays and reading difficulties, speech-language pathologists should be encouraged to include elements of reading in their therapy with preschoolers. By using such activities, speech-language pathologists should observe an increase in the language and speech abilities of their clients, regardless of the children's present abilities. Reading can be included in the context of therapy in various ways, but the most efficient way is to design thematic units with correlated prereading and postreading activities.

An Exploration Of Possibly Using Anti-Angiogenic Therapy As A Treatment For Lung Cancer, Peter Alan Middleton Apr 1998

An Exploration Of Possibly Using Anti-Angiogenic Therapy As A Treatment For Lung Cancer, Peter Alan Middleton

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Controlling angiogenesis in vivo is strongly being considered by pathologists and experimenters due to the recent success of using anti-angiogenic therapy for cancer patients in clinical trials. The apparent nature and overwhelming number of cases of lung cancer (bronchogenic carcinoma) are leading some clinicians to using anti-angiogenic pharmaceuticals with lung-cancer patients. Pre-clinical and experimental evidence supporting the use of anti-angiogenic therapy for lung cancer is apparently increasing. Macrophages, lymphocytes, fibroblasts, vascular smooth muscle cells, lung alveolar, …

Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw Apr 1998

Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This holistic curriculum addresses the many realms in which violence affects children: cognitive, affective, social, and behavioral. A violence prevention thematic unit containing lesson plans, performance tasks, and learning centers has been built around six research-based interlocking components: understanding violence, identifying and expressing emotions, valuing peace, feeling a sense of community, being safe, and resolving conflicts nonviolently. The goal is that through beginning to teach practical violence prevention skills in these six areas in the primary grades (K-3), children will learn how to handle their aggressions and resolve conflicts without the use of violence.
