Moderation Of Personality Test Validity, Christopher Woolard
Moderation Of Personality Test Validity, Christopher Woolard
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Personality testing can be an adequate instrument for prediction of future job performance. However, the predictive ability of these tests has been only moderate at best. This researcher attempted to determine if feedback would help improve the predictive ability of personality tests. The results indicated that feedback did not moderate the relationship between the personality dimensions and job performance for all of the personality construct s except Openness to Experience. This researcher also attempted to replicate the findings of the Barrick and Mount (1993) study which found that autonomy moderated the relationship between Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and job performance. This …

Study Of The Baie Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Yasemin Kaya
Study Of The Baie Gene In Bile Acid 7Α-Dehydroxylating Bacteria, Yasemin Kaya
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Intestinal bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria have recently been implicated in cholesterol allstone disease. Eubacterium sp. V.P.I. 12708, a bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacterium, contains multiple bile acid inducible (bai) genes which encode the enzymes responsible for bile acid 7a-dehydroxylation. The baiE gene encodes a bile acid dehydratase activity in Eubacterium sp.V.P.I. 12708. Using the polymerase chain reaction assay we determined the presence or absence of baiE-like genes in five clostridial bile-acid 7α-dehydroxylating strains: Clostridium sp. TO-931, Clostridium sp. HD-17, Clostridium sp. TN-271, Clostridium bifermentans 1-55, and Clostridium sordellii ATCC 9714. Results from all the strains tested showed amplification at the predicted …

Zebrafish Retinal Development And The Effects Of Abnormal Light Rearing Conditions, Shannon Saszik
Zebrafish Retinal Development And The Effects Of Abnormal Light Rearing Conditions, Shannon Saszik
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Anatomical and physiological studies have shown that the zebrafish is a useful model of vertebrate visual function. Anatomy has shown that the zebrafish possess the traditional three cone types (S-, M-, and L- cones), and a fourth cone type that is sensitive to ultraviolet light (U-cones). Physiologically, the adult zebrafish appears to have a complex visual system with color opponent mechanisms. Anatomical results suggest that the zebrafish may be a good model of retinal development as well. The zebrafish retina develops in a sequential manner and is immature at hatch. Bilotta et al. (1996) also found that the retina was …

Coping With Jealousy: Effects Of Personality, Gender And Intensity Of Jealousy, Tisha Thompson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present researcher focused on how subjects cope with jealousy in 6 different situations. A scale was developed to assess how jealous subjects would be in the 6 situations and how likely they were to use 13 different coping methods. Principal components analysis yielded 3 coping components. The researcher investigated the relationship between personality and coping style, finding that different personality types, using Costa and McCrae's 5-factor model, coped differently with jealousy. The researcher also examined the relationship between gender and coping style. Results suggested that females use coping methods to save the relationship with their partner and males tend …
"Anything Dead Coming Back To Life Hurts": Ghosts And Memory In Hamlet And Beloved, Rebecca Boyd
"Anything Dead Coming Back To Life Hurts": Ghosts And Memory In Hamlet And Beloved, Rebecca Boyd
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Ghost stories are an ingrained part of most cultures because, typically, humans must be forced to confront those elements of their individual and communal past that they would prefer to ignore. Accordingly, ghosts have embodied weaknesses and hidden evils that must be assimilated and transcended, and writers have embroidered a variety of subtexts upon the traditional fabric of ghostlore. Specifically, both William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Toni Morrison's Beloved employ ghosts as symbols of man's archetypal desire to hide his past. A careful examination of the texts in these ghost stories, of the cultural folklore included, and of the ghosts' influence …

Contribution Of Tobacco To Agriculture Receipts In Four Prominent Tobacco Producing States, Brian Lacefield
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Agriculture receipt data were obtained from USDA Agriculture Statistics on four prominent tobacco producing states-North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia--for the period of 1946 through 1995. The data were adjusted for inflation according to the Consumer Price Index and averaged for five-year periods beginning with 1946-1950 and continuing through 1991-1995. There were four objectives of the study. The first objective was to compare these states for annual agriculture receipts, crop receipts, and livestock receipts. State total agriculture receipts ranged from 1.8 to 3.2 billion dollars in 1946-50 and from 1.4 to 4.1 billion dollars in 1991-95. For total agriculture receipt, …
The Effects Of So2 On The Formation Of Cl2 During Co-Firing Muncipal Solid Waste With Coal, Ying Xie
The Effects Of So2 On The Formation Of Cl2 During Co-Firing Muncipal Solid Waste With Coal, Ying Xie
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Deacon Reaction was proposed as a mechanism for the formation of molecular chlorine during the combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW): 4HCl + O2 ↔ 2Cl2 + 2H2O As suggested by some researchers, co-firing high sulfur coal with MSW may reduce the emission of toxic chlorinated organics, resulting from the reaction between S02 and Cl2: SO2 + Cl2 + H2O → SO3 + 2HCl The effect of sulfur dioxide on the formation of chlorine through the Deacon Reaction is investigated in this study. A Lindberg Furnace was utilized and preheated to 800°C to simulate the conditions in the AFBC …
