Understanding And Communicating Physical Activity Guidelines: Creating A Training Video For Health Care Providers, Jafrā D. Thomas, Bethany C. Love, Caroline N. Smith
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Like Das et al.’s study (2018, TJACSM), studies over the last decade or so have shown that many health care providers have low knowledge of peer-reviewed physical activity guidelines (PAGs, e.g., Barton et al., 2021, Physical Therapy in Sport; Douglas et al., 2006, BMC Public Health). One remedy may be educational videos. PURPOSE: This presentation details a process to create a short, interactive, educational video to train health care providers in how to advise clients in a manner consistent with PAGs. METHODS: Over a four-month period (January to April of 2021), the second author developed …

Anthropometric Predictors Of Arterial Stiffness When Adjusting For Fitness In College-Aged Adults, Riley Morton, Kyli Alvarez, Estephania Campa, Malia Nowlen, Zachary Zeigler
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the largest cause of non-communicable disease death worldwide. Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of CVD. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio predict arterial stiffness. However, there is inconstancy in the literature as to which is the best predictor of arterial stiffness. Measured cardiovascular fitness is also an independent predictor of arterial stiffness and is rarely controlled for in epidemiological studies. The purpose of this study was to identify the superior anthropometric predictor of arterial stiffness after controlling for measured fitness.
METHODS: Healthy young adults were recruited from Grand …

Covid-19 Lockdowns: Exacerbating The Silent Pandemic, David Gomez, Eric V. Neufeld, James W. Hicks, Brett A. Dolezal
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 1256-1260, 2021. The global medical community has exalted the vaccine as the champion solution to end the violent toll inflicted by COVID-19. While the role of vaccines cannot be undervalued in wide-scale intervention, presenting them as the sole solution exonerates individuals of the importance of taking ownership over their lifestyle choices. This editorial focuses on the importance of physical activity as a crucial component of COVID-19 prevention programs and a long-term investment against chronic diseases.

Step It Up: A Pilot Study Of The Physical Demands Of Division I Team’S Soccer Matches Versus Semi-Professional And Collegiate Competition, Madalyn Carrasco, Robert G. Lockie
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In spring, Division I (DI) men’s soccer teams have the opportunity to play collegiate and semi-professional (SP) teams. It could be expected that players on a collegiate team express higher workloads in a match against better competition. GPS data could be used to measure these workloads. However, at the collegiate level some coaches may takeaway GPS use in matches from some players as disciplinary action. This could impact data recorded by team sport scientists. PURPOSE: To compare physical demands measured by GPS metrics of a DI team in matches versus collegiate and SP competition in a real-world environment. METHODS: GPS …

Kinematics And Motor Responses Of Law Enforcement Officers In A Spontaneous Lethal Threat Scenario, Michael A. Kantor, Dane Bartz, William Lewinski, Robert Pettitt Facsm
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
When law enforcement officers (LEOs) face a spontaneous act of lethal force, there is no “warning or foreperiod” as in typical assessments of motor response, causing a startle response to occur. The firearm draw has been tested in controlled settings; however, such an analysis when under duress has not been examined for motor response. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate LEOs firearm draw and motor response following a spontaneous presentation of lethal force in a training scenario. METHODS: A total of 22 active duty LEOs engaged in training scenario under the ruse of a …

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues for nearly two years, communities of faith are struggling to meet the spiritual needs of individuals, congregants, and communities during a particularly trying time in history. They have experienced closures, phased re-openings, and reinstated restrictions as the pandemic sees the fourth surge and a deadly more transmissible form of COVID in the Delta Variant. Faith Community Nurses, who are specially educated to provide intentional care of the spirit, play a pivotal role in providing care, support, and education to maintain and improve whole person health when people are isolated, physically distant, and at times critically …

Practice Matters: Adult Vaccination Recommendations, Kara S. Haughtigan, Elizabeth A. Groves
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Vaccinations provide protection from serious illness, long term complications, or death from vaccine-preventable infectious diseases throughout the lifespan. Vaccinations are a safe and effective primary prevention strategy to improve individual and community health. With many immunizations scheduled during childhood, adult vaccination needs for individuals over the age of 18 may be overlooked. Pre-existing health conditions, travel, and personal lifestyle, along with decreasing childhood immunization protections, can leave adults vulnerable to many vaccine-preventable diseases. The onset of the global 2019 coronavirus pandemic, along with vaccination disparities, anti-vaccination ideals, and mistrust, has highlighted the need for open discussion and public education regarding …

Distinguishing Autism Spectrum Disorder From Other Developmental Delays At 24 Months, Searcy Kaylee
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children has been increasing over the past several years. Receiving individualized interventions at an early age (before age 3) drastically shifting the developmental trajectory of a child with ASD in a more positive direction, as well as improving the child’s level of functioning, showing the importance of early intervention for a child with ASD. To receive early interventions, a child must first be diagnosed with ASD. Some research suggests that characteristics of ASD can be seen in children by the time they are 24 months. However, research also shows that most …

This study explores factors that predict persistence for underrepresented minority students participating in an intervention program that branches off into a Living Learning Community. This research is significant due to the growing change of student demographics across college campuses and the need for institutions to understand how they can assist in student persistence. The study was conducted as a quantitative study and responses from study participants were analyzed using SPSS. The findings concluded that cumulative GPA was the only significant factor in predicting persistence for this student population. There are some noteworthy mentions from the study regarding the Living Learning …

The Impact Of Social Networking Sites On Online Boundaries And Relationship Satisfaction, Jay Ingram
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of how the use of social networking and online boundaries affects relationship satisfaction. Because the literature has not yet addressed how social networking intrusion affects couples, this study draws on previous research of face-to-face boundary setting. An instrument was developed specifically for this study to measure the extent of intrusion of social networking use from factors of romantic jealousy, partner surveillance, and relationship conflict. Previous research found these factors to have a negative impact on relationship satisfaction in face-to-face situations.
Three hundred thirty-one participants completed the Relationship Assessment Scale, the Social …

Developing And Applying An Integrated Spatial Karst Evaluation And Management Priority Tool: Case Study In Tongass National Forest, Alaska, Usa, Christian Decelle
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Karst terrains are complex landscapes that are sensitive to human disturbance. Human activities have polluted and impacted many of these terrains around the world. To preserve these unique landscapes, many karst regions are protected and designated as national parks, geologic special areas, or UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. Despite the widespread general protection of karst landscapes globally, a review of each area’s management plan reveals there is no standardized method of cave and karst management or evaluation of karst impacts.
The non-standardization of karst management strategies may be due to the gap that exists between the needs of karst land managers and …
