Say It Like You Mean It: Linguistic Components Of Social Media Corporate Apologies And Their Effects On Consumer Outcomes, Laurel Johnston
Say It Like You Mean It: Linguistic Components Of Social Media Corporate Apologies And Their Effects On Consumer Outcomes, Laurel Johnston
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In order to meet increasing consumer demands and protect their reputations, brands must implement a combination of communication and service strategies on social media today. Corporate apologies are an effective crisis communication strategy to reduce online interactions that damage brand reputations. While the value of social media corporate apologies has been established in the literature, few studies have broken down the elements of apologies used in service interactions on social media platforms.
This study manipulated previously untested linguistic components of corporate apologies on Twitter to test their effects on perceived apology sincerity, forgiveness, purchase intentions, and brand advocacy. Results showed …

Deaths In Open Water Swimming Races In Brazil From 2009 To 2019, Fabrízio Di Masi, Gabriel Costa E Silva, Danielli Braga De Mello, David Szpilman, Mike Tipton
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(6): 1295-1305, 2022. Since the inclusion in the Olympic Games (2008), open swimming races have attracted greater media attention and, therefore, have a greater number of practitioners, especially in Brazil, an extremely favorable country for this sport. However, increasing reports of fatal incidents in open water races brought the medical and scientific community to attention. The aim of this study was to review the characteristics of deaths in open waters events in Brazil from 2009 to 2019. The survey was divided into 3 steps: 1) contacting sports-related federations and companies, including swimming and triathlon federations, …

Effects Of Creatine Supplementation And Progressive Resistance Training In Stroke Survivors, Sara Butchart, Darren G. Candow, Scott Forbes, Cameron Mang, Julianne Gordon, Jongbum Ko, Dalton Deprez, Phil Chilibeck, David Ditor
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 1117-1132, 2022. The purpose was to investigate the effects of progressive resistance training (PRT) and creatine supplementation in stroke survivors. Participants were randomized to one of two groups: creatine (n = 5; 51 ± 16y) or placebo (n = 3; 73 ± 8y) during 10 weeks of supervised PRT. Prior to and following PRT and supplementation, assessments were made for body composition (lean tissue and fat mass), muscle thickness, muscle strength (1-repetition maximum), functional exercise capacity (6-minute walk test, Berg Balance Scale; BBS), cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment; MoCA), and symptoms of anxiety …

Responses From Young Children Not On The Autism Spectrum On Selected Questions From The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (Ados-2), Lauren Lamar
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a widely used instrument in the assessment of autism spectrum disorder. One of the modules requires students to answer questions requiring relatively high-level language skills but that module could be given to children as young as four years of age. It is unclear how young non-spectrum children would respond to such questions. This study analyzed types of responses provided by kindergarten, first, and second grade students when asked questions from a subtest on the ADOS-2, Module 3. The sample was largely made up of typically developing students (n = 146) with the …
The Effects Of True Crime Media Consumption On Jurors’ Criminal Justice Orientations, Kendall Miller
The Effects Of True Crime Media Consumption On Jurors’ Criminal Justice Orientations, Kendall Miller
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study sought to determine the relationship between True Crime Media (TCM) or pretrial publicity (PTP) consumption and jurors' criminal justice orientations. This study also looked at dispositional empathy, right-wing authoritarianism, the need for affect, and the need for cognition as potential moderators. It was hypothesized that the more TCM and PTP consumed, the more participants will lean toward crime control ideologies. It was also hypothesized that the more TCM and PTP consumed, the higher participants would score on right-wing authoritarian viewpoints, on dispositional empathy, and on need for cognition. Participants were presented with a screening question of, "Do you …
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 22: Stumbling Blocks To An Understanding Of Wallace's Worldview, Charles H. Smith
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 22: Stumbling Blocks To An Understanding Of Wallace's Worldview, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The writings of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) present a challenge to modern readers, both for the large range of subjects he entertained, and his unique point of view. In this short treatment, ten ‘stumbling blocks’ to an appreciation of Wallace’s thought are outlined which, it is suggested, have caused problems of interpretation in the past.

Living Situation And Physical Activity In The Covid-19 Pandemic Among American Private University Students, Eduardo Gonzalez Villarreal, Laura S. Kabiri, Cassandra S. Diep, Hedi Y. Perkins, Amanda M. Perkins-Ball, Augusto X. Rodriguez
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 1064-1074, 2022. Many university students experienced changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, including potential changes in physical activity (PA) levels and living situation. As PA behaviors in young adulthood help establish life-long habits and future health outcomes, the purpose of this study was to investigate overall change in PA, as well as change in PA due to living situation, among private university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Private university students (n = 109) between 18 and 25 years of age completed an online survey that included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form. T-tests …

Bridging The Gap: Using College Athlete Support Services As Justification For Human Development In A Commercialized Sport Management, Sayvon Jl Foster, Calvin Nite
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(6): 934-947, 2022. This study investigates the presence of competing educational foundations within college athlete support service units across the 65 ‘Power Five’ conferences to call for more human development elements within sport management education and training. To determine the orientation of professionals within these units, educational foundation is used as the measure given the role education holds in establishing and communicating norms, values, and rules of practice for professionals within the discipline. Information was gathered through staff biographies and triangulated through secondary sources (university archives and social media accounts – LinkedIn and Twitter). Of …

Utilizing Heart Rate And Rpe To Prescribe Cycle Ergometer Hiit In Older Adults: A Feasibility Study, Christopher J. Keating, Pedro Ángel Latorre Román, José Carlos Cabrera Linares, Ana De La Casa Pérez, Juan Antonio Párraga Montilla
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 896-909, 2022. Previous research has provided evidence that aerobic HIIT exercise can induce important physiological adaptations and elicit improvements in health and fitness parameters. However, most of the research has taken place in a laboratory setting with specialized equipment and monitoring devices. It begs the question, is HIIT accessible to the general aging population? The objective of the current research was to employ an age-predicted HRmax to prescribe a minimally invasive 4x4 cycle ergometer HIIT protocol. Ten participants (age: 64.2 ± 6.1) completed a non-weight-bearing cycle ergometer protocol for 6 weeks. Significant Pearson correlations …
