Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 30. Wallace A Theist? Part I., Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) has been portrayed as a ‘theist’ on a large number of occasions from his own time on to the present. In this, the first of a two part work, this assessment is questioned. In part one, the matter of Wallace’s personal philosophy and spiritual orientation is explored, the conclusion being that Wallace was a lifelong agnostic who can hardly be aligned with theism.

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(3): 359-381 2024. The aim of the present study was to identify the different interventions for hamstring flexibility among university students with hamstring tightness and to determine the better treatment method. Design: Systematic review and network meta-analysis. An electronic search of the databases: Medline, Pubmed, Cochrane, EMBASE, CINAHL, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) was conducted. A total of 11 articles were included in the review. Of these articles, 02 were case-control studies, 02 were interventional pre-post studies and 07 were RCTs. The 07 RCTs were included for network meta-analysis. The findings of the initial network meta-analysis …
Structuring An Undergraduate Introductory Exercise Physiology Course: Learning-Practice-Evaluation, M. Landram
Structuring An Undergraduate Introductory Exercise Physiology Course: Learning-Practice-Evaluation, M. Landram
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
The purpose of this paper is to outline an introductory exercise physiology course structure for instructors. This is intended for classes with 15-25 students who possess an introductory biology, chemistry, and nutrition background; however, students taking those courses concurrently may also find success with this format. The course structure follows a learning-practice-evaluation content arc that repeats over content areas throughout the term. The main components of this arc are instructor lecture, student presentation, lab activities, and high and low stakes examinations. Individual components of the course are familiar within teaching practice but are scaffolded in a way to build skills …

Facilitating Access To Sports Medicine: Establishing A Sports Medicine Interest Group, Jared J. Tuttle, Alex Joyce, Jeffery Bolte, Chris Hinds, Antonio Terrazas, Jakson Johnson, Caleb Bouchard, Jeff Svec
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sideline shadowing and physician mentorship are crucial aspects of career progression within sports medicine. Without prior institutional connections, many medical students find it difficult to access these opportunities during medical school. A chartered sports medicine interest group can help close this gap. PURPOSE: The Sports Medicine Interest Group (SMIG) was created to facilitate access to mentorship and sideline shadowing opportunities at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). A program evaluation survey was administered to assess impact. METHODS: A faculty mentor was identified, and permission was granted for students to regularly shadow sideline coverage …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The preschool years is a critical time for the optimal development of children's fine and gross motor skills for future engagement in physical activity. Parents play a critical role in the development of these skills and early identification of potential developmental delays in their children. Early identification of developmental delay is essential for early intervention and rely on accurate child screenings that are often administered by parents. Few studies have compared the accuracy of parent’s perceptions across two different measurements with children's actual motor skills. PURPOSE: This study compared parents' perceptions of their child’s motor skills on two assessments with …

Changes In Brain Activity Immediately Post-Exercise Indicate A Role For Central Fatigue In The Volitional Termination Of Exercise, Grant Chesbro, Cameron Owens, Melody Reese, Lisa Destefano, J. Mikhail Kellawan, Daniel Larson, Michael Wenger, Rebecca Larson
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(1): 220-234, 2024. Electroencephalography (EEG) allows for the evaluation of real time changes in brain (electrocortical) activity during exercise. A few studies have examined changes in electrocortical activity using stationary cycling, but the findings have been mixed. Some of these studies have found increases in brain activity following exercise, while others have found decreases in brain activity following exercise. Hence, it is of importance to identify post-exercise changes in brain activity. Sixteen healthy, untrained subjects (8 males; 8 females) participated in the study. All 16 participants performed a graded exercise test (GXT) to volitional exhaustion …

Older Persons Participation In Hard Martial Arts: Opportunities To Improve Psychological Well-Being? A Scoping Review., Dan Sullivan, Mike Climstein, Brian Moore, Luke Del Vecchio Dr
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 183-198, 2024. This study aims to explore the potential psychological and cognitive advantages for older individuals engaged in hard martial arts (HMA), through a comprehensive scoping review of literature up to 2023. Specifically, it examines the extent of changes in cognition, mental state, and quality of life among elderly participants of HMA. Inclusion criteria were studies conducted on healthy persons who were over 50 years of age. Only papers published in the English language were included. The search was undertaken in electronic databases and sources of grey literature. Thirteen papers with a total of …

Studying Adherence To Reporting Standards In Kinesiology: A Post-Publication Peer Review Brief Report, Nikki M. Watson, Jafra D. Thomas
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(7): 25-37, 2024. To demonstrate how post-publication peer reviews—using journal article reporting standards—could improve the design and write-up of kinesiology research, the authors performed a post-publication peer review on one systematic literature review published in 2020. Two raters (1st & 2nd authors) critically appraised the case article between April and May 2021. The latest Journal Article Reporting Standards by the American Psychological Association relevant to the review were used: i.e., Table 1 (quantitative research standards) and Table 9 (research synthesis standards). A standard fully met was deemed satisfactory. Per Krippendorff’s alpha-coefficient, inter-rater agreement …
The Relationship Between Athlete Perceptions Of Coaching Leadership Behaviors And Athlete Grit, Landon Braun, Lindsay Ross-Stewart, Barbara B. Meyer
The Relationship Between Athlete Perceptions Of Coaching Leadership Behaviors And Athlete Grit, Landon Braun, Lindsay Ross-Stewart, Barbara B. Meyer
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 12-23, 2023. Coach leadership style has long been positively correlated with athlete experiences such as motivation, health (i.e., burnout), and performance outcomes (i.e., enhanced execution time to complete tasks) (24). More recently, grit (18) has been positively correlated with athlete experiences such as engagement (39) and decreased burnout (32). Given the impact coaches have on their athletes and the positive psychological benefits of grit, it is reasonable to explore the intersections of coaching behaviors and grit. As such, the purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between athlete perceptions of coach …
