Measurement Of Strength Gains Using A Fascial System Exercise Program, Michele M. Bond, Richard Lloyd, Robyn A. Braun, James A. Eldridge
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(1): 825-838, 2019. Current fascia research is allowing for an interdisciplinary understanding of the body’s anatomical, biomechanical, and neurological connectivity via the fascial network. Fascial research and its application has been validated and established in various clinical areas of research. The purpose of this study was to apply the current knowledge of the fascial system to general exercise protocols. This study involved 20 women, ages 30-60 years, who were novice weight trainers, mostly sedentary, and with no injuries, excessive pain or disease. The 10-week study compared strength gain changes between a strength training regimen control …

Comparing Suicide Risk, Acquired Capability, Distress Tolerance, And Reasons For Living In Those With Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Or Disordered Eating, Brooke Beck
Student/Alumni Personal Papers
Acquired Capability has been a longstanding measure used to predict the likelihood that one may attempt suicide. However, does it hold true in every scenario? Are there other measures that would prove more accurate? This research evaluated these questions, examining archival data of two identified risk groups: those participating in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and Disordered Eating (DE).
When measured using the Acquired Capability for Suicide Scale (ACSS), both groups have similar results in survey data as well as when measuring Distress Tolerance. This would imply that both are at the same risk of attempting suicide. However, when the groups were …

Analysis Of Permaculture’S Water Conservation And Crop Supporting Abilities, Hannah Chaney
Analysis Of Permaculture’S Water Conservation And Crop Supporting Abilities, Hannah Chaney
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In the Middle East, virtually all agriculturally viable land is under high threat of desertification due to poor land and resource management and climate change. Mulching using straw flakes (straw mulch permaculture) is a method commonly used in successful dry land permaculture projects in the Middle East. We proposed that straw mulch permaculture would increase the amount of soil moisture during dry periods and that this method would not impact the growth and survival of the crop. In order to test this hypothesis, we took soil samples from plots with and without straw mulch permaculture in Bowling Green, KY and …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 701-713, 2019. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute endothelial, cardiovascular, and performance responses to L-arginine intake by assessing flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and various indicators (e.g., heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure, torque) both before and after resistance exercise. Thirty (15 male, 15 female) physically active participants (mean ± SD: age 20.4 ± 1.8 years, height 176.9 ± 10.2 cm, body mass 76.0 ± 12.2 kg) volunteered for a randomized, cross-over, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Participants completed five sets of elbow extension-flexion exercise after consumption of either 3 g …

Nursing Alumni: Continuing Education Preferences, Maire M. Blankenship, Cathy H. Abell, Maria E. Main, Kim Elaine Young Vickous
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are 2.9 million registered nurses in the U.S who practice in a variety of settings including faith communities. The faith community nurse blends care of the spirit along with physical health to prevent or decrease illnesses. To stay informed of the latest evidenced-based practice, continuing education is essential. Due to many factors; work schedules, family, and location, meeting educational needs can be a challenge. The aim of this study was to examine nurses’ preferences related to delivery methods and day/time as well as topics of interest that influence nurses’ decisions when choosing …
Describing Transitional Care Using The Nursing Intervention Classification: Faith Community Nursing, Deborah J. Ziebarth, Katora Campbell
Describing Transitional Care Using The Nursing Intervention Classification: Faith Community Nursing, Deborah J. Ziebarth, Katora Campbell
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Abstract
Objective(s)
Faith community nurses (FCNs) provide transitional care to community patients following discharge from acute care facilities. Study objectives: describe transitional care using a standardized nursing language, Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) and compare transitional care interventions to those considered to be evidenced-based.
Sample
Two years of de-identified intervention data captured from the FCN’s documentation of transitional care.
Design
A mixed method descriptive design was used to facilitate a thorough exploration of the interventions. A qualitative descriptive method operationalized the concepts regarding transitional care interventions performed. A quantitative descriptive design was used to count nominal categories of documented nursing interventions. …

The Impact Of Cell Phone Texting During Aerobic Exercise On Measures Of Cognition, Michael J. Rebold, Mallory S. Kobak, Cody A. Croall, Emily A. Cumberledge, Matthew T. Dirlam, Timothy P. Sheehan
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 646-656, 2019. This study assessed the effect of cell phone texting during a 30-minute bout of cycle ergometer exercise on measures of cognition (i.e., reaction time and accuracy). Twenty-eight college students participated in two conditions (cell phone and no cell phone). Reaction time and accuracy were assessed pre- and post-exercise with the use of the Stroop test. Reaction time was significantly worse (p < 0.001) in the cell phone condition from pre- (1003.75 ± 178.04 ms) to post-exercise (1124.46 ± 238.55 ms). Reaction time was significantly better (p < 0.001) in the no cell phone condition from pre- …

Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion In Copers And Those With Chronic Ankle Instability, Madison M. Vomacka, Melena R. Calhoun, Monica R. Lininger, Jupil Ko
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(1): 614-622, 2019. The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) is used to classify individuals as ankle sprain copers, or as one suffering from chronic ankle instability (CAI). However, literature examining factors contributing to these classifications on the CAIT is lacking, as the CAIT itself does not offer explanations for specific anthropometric measures that influence a patient’s classification. Therefore, the purpose was to determine if there was a difference between dorsiflexion active range of motion (AROM) between copers, those with CAI, and a healthy control group. Twenty-two individuals with recent ankle sprains were recruited by a …
