Review: Myth, Metaphysics And Dialectic In Plato's Statesman, Audrey L. Anton
Review: Myth, Metaphysics And Dialectic In Plato's Statesman, Audrey L. Anton
Philosophy & Religion Faculty Publications
David White’s Myth, Metaphysics and Dialectic in Plato’s Statesman is an ambitious work that aims not only to interpret the message of Plato’s Statesman, but also to situate the dialogue within Plato’s corpus as one that serves as a transition between Plato’s earlier metaphysics and his more mature views in later dialogues such as Philebus and Laws. White makes several adept observations of oddities sprinkled throughout Statesman, and he frequently connects these observations to thoughtful claims concerning possible motivations on the part of Plato as well as possible revelations concerning Platonic metaphysics and philosophy. However, justifiably made inferences …

New Negroes On Campus: St. Clair Drake And The Culture Of Education, Reform, And Rebellion At Hampton Institute, Andrew Rosa
History Faculty Publications
On March 15, 1925, Walter Scott Copeland, owner and editor of the Newport News Daily Press, charged that Hampton Institute was teaching and practicing “social equality between the white and negro races . . . The niggers in that institution,” he wrote, “were being taught that there ought not to be any distinction between themselves and white people.” His observation came from his wife, who was distraught after having seen a performance of the Denishawn Dancers while seated next to a black women in Hampton’s Ogden Hall only two weeks before.4 Based in Los Angeles and New York, the …

The Real Alfred Russel Wallace: Essays On An Outside-The-Box Thinker, Charles H. Smith
The Real Alfred Russel Wallace: Essays On An Outside-The-Box Thinker, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Alfred Russel Wallace (8 January 1823 – 7 November 1913), English polymath and social critic, ranks high on the list of the most interesting characters in the history of science. Nevertheless, and despite a life filled with achievement, he has often been marginalized in the halls of learning. The truth is, Wallace was something of an “outside–the–box” thinker, and his many forays into the murkier areas of science and social science cost him a lot of potential supporters. Still others, while recognizing his intellectual talents in general, have looked at the full span of his work and interests as a …
Debating Immigration: Arizona's Controversial Response To Illegal Hispanic Immigration, Parker M. Wornall
Debating Immigration: Arizona's Controversial Response To Illegal Hispanic Immigration, Parker M. Wornall
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Hispanic Immigration into the United States is no new phenomena. What is new in regards to this immigration is the strict measures being taken by various states where Hispanic immigration is most prevalent. These laws are proving to be arbitrary, punitive, and unethical. Arizona was the first to pass a “stop policy” on immigration with Senate Bill 1070. This bill does not aptly address the many push and pull factors that have caused this immigration; push factors being factors that will drive people away from Latin America, and pull factors being factors that attract them to the United States. Likewise, …

Personal Reflections On Jumah Cola Time To Drink And A Declaration Of Ideals, Joel R. Fickel
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Approximately one year ago, I founded an experimental theater group on the campus of Western Kentucky University called The Corporate Surrealists of America. The group is made up of artists from radically different departments and disciplines and is focused on fostering an alternative kind of performance that is both richly multi-disciplinary and seriously concerned with burning political, social, and historical issues. One of the group’s main tenets has been to attempt to make art in the periphery of an institution as much as possible. Several thrilling independent productions were mounted including NIGHT RAID, WITH THESE MY HANDS OF THE …
