Impact Of Intermittent Hypoxia On Glucose Tolerance In Type 2 Diabetes, Jiahui Zhao, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Sophie Lalande
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Hypoxia increases glucose uptake in skeletal muscle through an insulin-independent pathway. PURPOSE: To assess the impact of intermittent hypoxia on glucose and insulin concentrations during an oral glucose tolerance test in adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Six adults with type 2 diabetes (5 men, age: 51±15 years, HbA1c: 7.3±1.5%) performed a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test on two separate occasions. On both visits, venous blood samples were collected before and 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after the ingestion of a high-glucose drink. After ingestion of the drink, participants were exposed to either an intermittent hypoxia (IH) protocol, consisting …

Sport performance is influenced by sport-specific requirements for body composition. One major predictor of body composition is protein intake. Higher protein intake tends to cause leaner body composition relative to lower protein intake, especially during caloric deficit. In Bexar County, ~72% of the adult population is overweight/obese and 15.5% are diabetic. This suggests that high protein diet could be a high leverage option in the San Antonio population for optimizing body composition for sport performance. Furthermore, late life sporting activity and protein intake is a primary method for mitigating sarcopenia, osteoporosis, fractures, and accidental death in post-menopausal women. PURPOSE: …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Hyperglycemia in people with prediabetes and diabetes, if left untreated, can cause serious health conditions and may lead to a diabetic coma. Muscle contraction through conventional exercise is known to increase glucose uptake in cells, thereby decreasing blood glucose levels. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is an innovative approach to contract skeletal muscle involuntarily. Whereas exercise is widely recommended for hyperglycemia management, it is not known whether NMES can be used as an alternative strategy to improve glycemic control. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of NMES for muscle contraction can improve glycemic control …

Postprandial And Fasting Lipopolysaccharide Levels In Healthy Hispanic Residents Of Southeast Texas With Positive Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Amanda J. Wheeler, Yu Lun Tai, Smaran Marupudi, Ryan D. Russell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Healthy people with a family history (FH+) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) display impaired metabolic and microvascular function prior to glucose intolerance, and are at greater risk for developing T2D. While mechanisms to explain this disparity are lacking, it is possible that intestinal permeability plays a role, as it is also linked with insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and chronic inflammation. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) act as an outer membrane component of gram-negative bacteria in intestines and play a role in inflammation and chronic disease when in circulation, thus serving as a surrogate measure of intestinal permeability. However, the link between FH+ …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
Approximately 79% of the Hispanic population in the Rio Grande Valley (HPRGV) are overweight or obese. As such, this population also have ~3x the type 2 diabetes (T2D) rates than the US average. Distribution of adipose tissue, affected largely by genetics and lifestyle (diet and physical activity, has been identified as a key-marker for T2D risk among apparently healthy individuals. However, the relationship of lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity on android fat in healthy young Hispanics of the RGV has not been completely explored. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is …

ABSTRACT Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has several comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, elevated lipid profile, microvascular complications, and impaired metabolic flexibility (MF: the ability to switch substrate use upon stimulation). Further, healthy Caucasians with a family history of T2D (FH+) have impaired MF similar to T2D, suggesting impaired MF could be an early-detection tool to identify at-risk populations. Hispanics of the Rio Grande Valley have ~3x the T2D rates as the US average, and have ~79% of the people in this region are either overweight or obese. However, patterns of MF in this population have not been addressed. Purpose: The …

Hypoxia triggers glucose uptake independently from the action of insulin. PURPOSE: To determine the acute effect of intermittent hypoxia, defined as alternating short bouts of breathing hypoxic and room air, on plasma glucose levels during an oral glucose tolerance test in healthy individuals. We hypothesized that exposure to intermittent hypoxia would attenuate the increase in glucose levels in response to an oral glucose tolerance test. METHODS: Nine individuals (5 men, age: 24 ± 4 years, height: 175 ± 9 cm, weight: 71.0 ± 13.5 kg, HbA1c: 5.4 ± 0.1%) participated in the study. Participants visited the laboratory on two occasions. …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(3): 88-102, 2022. Older adults often face a variety of health problems that are found less frequently in younger populations. Metabolic syndrome and other related diseases are common due to a variety of age and lifestyle factors. Sleep, often operationalized only as duration, quality, or apnea diagnosis, is associated with worse health outcomes across the lifespan. However, sleep is multi-faceted and may require a collection of measures in order to reflect this. This study examined a suite of self-reported sleep habits (risk for sleep apnea, night time duration, nap duration, quality, timing, and consistency of …

Detection Of P2x3 In Drg Using An Automated Approach To Immunoblotting, Jess, Junghoon Lee, Audrey J. Stone, Michelle L. Harrison
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exaggerated cardiovascular (CV) responses to exercise can lead to adverse CV events. Previous studies have reported that P2X3 receptors, found on the peripheral endings of afferents, contribute to an exaggerated exercise pressor reflex in individuals with CV-related diseases. One way to investigate the role played by these receptors in CV pathophysiology is through immunoblotting. The Jess (Protein Simple) provides an automated option for the protein separation and immunoblotting of the traditional Western Blot and allows for total protein staining, an improvement over the use of loading controls to normalize for sample loading variability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study …

Mathematical Modeling Of Diabetic Foot Ulcers Using Optimal Design And Mixed-Modeling Techniques, Michael Belcher
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A mathematical model for the healing response of diabetic foot ulcers was developed using averaged data (Krishna et al., 2015). The model contains four major factors in the healing of wounds using four separate differential equations with 12 parameters. The four differential equations describe the interactions between matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1), tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMP-1), the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the skin, and the fibroblasts, which produce these proteins. Recently, our research group obtained the individual patient data that comprised the averaged data. The research group has since taken several approaches to analyze the model with the individual …

Investigating The Change In The Out-Of-Pocket Cost Of Insulin Over Time, Jared Long
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Insulin is often cited as a classic near perfectly inelastic good; for those living with Type-1 diabetes, antihyperglycemic medicines are the only thing standing between them and possible death, and they must be willing to pay for the medication regardless of the price. When researchers at the University of Toronto released the patent for insulin in 1922, they asked for only $1 so that the medication would be available to as many people as possible; however, as insulin analogs and new biosimilar substitutes have been invented, the price of medications has increased substantially. While the rising cost of insulin has …

Passive Hyperthermia Therapy Similarly Reduces Arterial Blood Pressure In Obese Type 2 Diabetic And Healthy Individuals, Eric Rivas
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Diabetes which is associated with impaired glycemic control, can damage macro and microvasculature, and impair vascular relaxation (i.e., endothelial dysfunction). The high thermal conductance of hot water will cause thermoregulatory adjustments that increase cardiac output, heart rate and stroke volume while reducing central venous pressure. This project tested the hypothesis that an acute bout of hot water hyperthermia will reduce arterial blood pressure during and following the exposure, but the response will be attenuated in obese type 2 diabetics. Eleven obese type 2 diabetics (T2D) (50.1 ± 12 y, 45 ± 7.1% fat mass, 7.5 ± 1.8% HbA1C) and nine …

Diet represents an exogenous influence that often yields colossal effects on an individual’s phenotype, physiology, long-term health and disease risk. The overconsumption of dietary sugars for example, has contributed to significant increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes, health issues that are costly both in terms of dollars and human life. Additionally, individuals with these conditions have compromised oxygen delivery and thus, an increased vulnerability to other oxygen-deprivation related disease states, including cardiovascular disease, ischemic strokes, vascular and coronary diseases and myocardial infarction. While human and other mammalian studies have shown that individuals with type 2 diabetes have a worse …
