Sedimentological And Geochemical Investigation Of The Origin Of Upper Pennsylvanian Black Shales, East-Central Appalachian Basin, Tyler Hickey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the east-central Allegheny foreland basin, laminated black shales overlying Upper Pennsylvanian Glenshaw Fm. coal seams record paleoenvironmental conditions associated with the termination of peat swamp deposition before, during, and after the Carboniferous Coal Forest Collapse (CCFC), a major paleobotanical evolutionary event during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) that contributed to extinction of lepidodendrons near the Desmoinesian-Missourian boundary (~306 Ma). Previous investigations of the CCFC commonly implicate an episode of aridification during intensification of LPIA glaciation that stressed the lepidodendrons beyond their ecological tipping point; however, the cause of this aridification is unclear. An investigation of Glenshaw Fm. black …
Deep-Learning-Based Generation Of Synthetic Contactless Fingerphotos, Christopher Harry Burton
Deep-Learning-Based Generation Of Synthetic Contactless Fingerphotos, Christopher Harry Burton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The collection of biometric data is a labor-intensive, high-resource process that presents significant logistical, privacy, and cost barriers for researchers and developers. To address these challenges, the biometrics community has increasingly turned to generative models capable of producing synthetic datasets that reflect the statistical properties of real data. While substantial progress has been made in synthetic fingerprint generation for contact-based modalities, the contactless fingerphoto domain has remained largely underserved. This work presents a deep learning-based approach to synthetic contactless fingerphoto generation using a Stable Diffusion model guided by multimodal conditions (text and image). The dataset used for training was collected …

Preference Of Smiling Esthetics By Caucasian And Chinese Orthodontic Professionals, Tamana Spingher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: Comprehensive orthodontic treatment aims to achieve optimal facial esthetics, which is guided by established norms that have shown variability across different ethnic and gender groups. There is a paucity of literature comparing the esthetic preferences of Chinese and Caucasian orthodontic professionals regarding smiling esthetics. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived smiling attractiveness ratings between Chinese and Caucasian orthodontic professionals. Methods: One Chinese and one Caucasian lateral smiling photograph generated by artificial intelligence (AI) were used in this study. The maxillary central incisor position was digitally manipulated to simulate variations in anteroposterior (AP) position …
The Resilient Educator: Examining The Role Of Resilience On A First-Year Rural Music Educator’S Job Satisfaction, Isaac Price
The Resilient Educator: Examining The Role Of Resilience On A First-Year Rural Music Educator’S Job Satisfaction, Isaac Price
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The future of music education in schools is largely determined by educators' resilience in their positions. Resilience is the process of adapting to adversity by accessing and utilizing intrinsic and extrinsic resources available (Gu & Day, 2007; Squires et al., 2023). Resilience affects various aspects of an educator’s personal and professional life, including job satisfaction (Li, 2023). Job satisfaction can affect teacher health, teacher performance, and teacher retention, which in turn may affect student performance (Huysman, 2008; Lu et al., 2024; Robison & Russell, 2022). The circumstances and events that occur during a teacher’s first year in the profession can …
Evaluation Of Potential Factors Limiting The Expansion Of Invasive Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Spp.) In The Ohio River Basin, Erin Shepta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The introduction of aquatic invasive species is one of the greatest threats to freshwater biodiversity around the world. Two species of invasive carp, bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix) have spread throughout much of the Mississippi River Basin, resulting in serious ecological impacts to native communities. Their spread in the Ohio River, a major tributary of the Mississippi River, appears to have slowed, with limited evidence of upstream advancements. Here, we investigated abiotic and biotic factors that may be contributing to the reduced spread of invasive carp in the Ohio River Basin. Generally, …
Posttraumatic Growth In Appalachian Youth: Findings From An Outpatient Pediatric Trauma Specialty Clinic, Marinne M. Morgan
Posttraumatic Growth In Appalachian Youth: Findings From An Outpatient Pediatric Trauma Specialty Clinic, Marinne M. Morgan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Childhood traumatic event exposure (CTE) involves exposure to extreme events that overwhelm one’s ability to cope. Childhood traumatic event exposure has been linked to a wide range of adverse mental and physical health consequences, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Fewer studies have examined positive trajectories following childhood traumatic event exposure, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG), especially in understudied regions such as Appalachia. The current study used a cross-sectional design to examine posttraumatic growth in 14 youths aged 9 to 15 years seeking trauma-focused therapeutic services at an outpatient pediatric trauma specialty clinic in West Virginia. In line with previous research, …
Cell-To-Pack Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Batteries: From Bayesian Parameterization To Pack-Level Optimization, Derek Slack
Cell-To-Pack Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Batteries: From Bayesian Parameterization To Pack-Level Optimization, Derek Slack
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the major hurdles for electric or hybrid aviation is the comparative energy density between lithium-ion batteries and jet fuel. To help obtain maximal power-to-weight ratio in electric or hybrid powertrains the battery pack design should be optimized to be as light as possible while meeting thermal safety and power requirements. The proposed solution is an optimization routine beginning with a cell-level parameter estimation of lithium-ion battery cells, where data driven Bayesian Gaussian Processes replace empirically or analytically derived parameters in a first principles electrochemical model in PyBaMM, as functions of the transient state of the cell. The resulting …
Fairness Without Demographic Attributes In Medical Vision–Language Models, Ahsan Habib Akash
Fairness Without Demographic Attributes In Medical Vision–Language Models, Ahsan Habib Akash
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vision–language models (VLMs) and the embedding models that underlie them have become the default representation layer for multimodal artificial intelligence. Trained by contrastive alignment over enormous, loosely curated image–text corpora, they inherit the demographic skew of that data, and they encode it in the geometry of the shared embedding space itself. The consequence is a model that performs unevenly across demographic groups even when no protected attribute is ever supplied as an input. In consumer applications this is an equity problem; in medicine it is a safety problem, because an embedding that is systematically less discriminative for one subpopulation translates …
Effect Of Yoga On Non-Invasive Measures Of Cardiovascular Functioning And Health, Alexis Nicole Thrower
Effect Of Yoga On Non-Invasive Measures Of Cardiovascular Functioning And Health, Alexis Nicole Thrower
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the number one cause of death worldwide and within the United States (US) for decades. Effective and practical prevention modalities are needed to reduce the burden of this often-preventable condition. Physical activity is an effective and modifiable behavior for CVD risk management; however, only one in four adults meet current physical activity guidelines. Some types of yoga, including vinyasa yoga, are a form of physical activity, and vinyasa yoga efficiently incorporates moderate-intensity aerobic activity, muscular-strengthening movements, and flexibility components. Yet, minimal rigorous research evaluates yoga’s effects on health. The purpose of this dissertation is …
Dielectrophoretic Biomarkers For Cancer Detection And Cell Analysis: Integrating Microfluidics And Ai, Raphael Olumide Oladokun
Dielectrophoretic Biomarkers For Cancer Detection And Cell Analysis: Integrating Microfluidics And Ai, Raphael Olumide Oladokun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) carries a five-year survival rate of 13%, driven largely by late-stage diagnosis and the absence of sensitive noninvasive screening tools. Current diagnostic methods lack the sensitivity to detect disease-associated systemic changes at early and precancerous stages, representing a critical clinical gap. This dissertation addresses the central hypothesis that PDAC and its pathological subtypes induce measurable, disease-associated electrophysiological changes in circulating PBMCs that can serve as correlative liquid-biopsy biomarkers. To test this hypothesis, this work asks: can dielectrophoresis (DEP), impedance and zeta potential analysis with AI-assisted classification distinguish benign pancreatic conditions (non-malignant control), precancerous lesions (primarily IPMNs), …
The Histamine-3 Receptor In Cardiac Fibrosis: A Novel Role In Fibroblast Function, Heather Linsky
The Histamine-3 Receptor In Cardiac Fibrosis: A Novel Role In Fibroblast Function, Heather Linsky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the United States, heart failure affects approximately 6.7 million individuals. Despite a number of available therapies, heart failure prevalence continues to grow, suggesting the need for a broader range of effective therapies. More specifically, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction comprises approximately 50% of all heart failure cases and, as the name suggests, is a disease of diastolic dysfunction as opposed to systolic dysfunction. A hallmark of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is myocardial fibrosis, which is a key contributor to diastolic dysfunction, and is the major focus of this dissertation work. In the heart, histamine-3 receptor activation …

Methods: A systematic evidence review of academic …
Gamification For Learning At Wvu Tech: Examples From Engineering And Biology, Tamara Floyd-Smith, Aida Elisabet Jiménez-Esquilín
Gamification For Learning At Wvu Tech: Examples From Engineering And Biology, Tamara Floyd-Smith, Aida Elisabet Jiménez-Esquilín
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
At WVU Tech, gamification is intentionally implemented by many faculty as a broad, multi-modal instructional approach rather than a single tool or activity. Faculty employ a range of gamification strategies, including the digital platform Kahoot but also analog, hands-on games (e.g., discipline-specific board games). These approaches are used for multiple instructional purposes, including supporting students in checking their understanding, practicing recall, working through challenging concepts, and developing problem-solving skills. Here we present applications of gamification for learning in engineering and biology courses at WVU Tech. Student feedback was collected regarding the use of Kahoot quizzes as a valuable and enjoyable …
Ai-Resistant Activities For Online And Large Enrollment Courses, Jason Bock, Eric Lemley
Ai-Resistant Activities For Online And Large Enrollment Courses, Jason Bock, Eric Lemley
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
The rapid adoption of generative AI tools has fundamentally challenged traditional assessments in higher education, particularly in large-enrollment and fully asynchronous online courses where instructor presence and grading time are constrained. While many instructors have responded by restricting AI use or adopting detection tools, research increasingly shows that detection-based approaches are unreliable and labor-intensive. We propose a design-centered alternative: reshaping assessments so that AI use becomes insufficient, rather than prohibited.
Drawing on a systematic process of testing proposed and original assessment ideas directly against multiple generative AI models (using both simple and advanced prompting strategies), we present a curated playbook …

Preserve Democracy By Teaching Social Action, Cheyenne C. Luzynski
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
This presentation introduces social action pedagogy aimed to empower students to lead campaigns on pressing social issues and strengthen their participation in democracy. Teaching social action has enhanced the knowledge, practice, and skills of leadership and civic engagement. America’s Promise Alliance conducted a research study on the state of young people in 2024 and found that young people have low trust in American institutions and adults and feel negatively affected by the current social and political climate (Flanagan et al., 2025). The report also found that young people want access to civic education and engagement opportunities to correct inequalities and …
Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway
Student Conceptions Of Summation And Limits In The Definite Integral Following Quantitatively Focused Instruction, Caleb Daniel Holloway
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
Recent studies have examined how students form productive conceptions of the definite integral and discussed techniques for promoting such conceptions. In this paper I present findings from interviews held with six students enrolled in second-semester calculus, four of whom had received quantitatively focused instruction on the definite integral. All six were chosen for their observed use of summation conceptions on definite integral problems, and here their conceptions are explored further. Additionally, we gain insight on their thinking regarding limits as related to the definite integral. The findings presented here add to our understanding of student thinking regarding the integral and …
Seeing Feedback Differently: Enhancing Learning Through Individualized Video Feedback, Makenzie Khristine Keepers
Seeing Feedback Differently: Enhancing Learning Through Individualized Video Feedback, Makenzie Khristine Keepers
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Concurrent Session Papers
Students often seek feedback that goes beyond rubric scores, especially for complex assignments like project reports where expectations are nuanced. Transitioning from lengthy written comments to personalized video responses has proven to be an effective alternative. These videos provide students with clear explanations of strengths and areas for growth, while walking them through their work in detail. Feedback from learners suggest that video feedback feels more comprehensive and accessible, helping them better understand mistakes and apply corrections. Importantly, producing video feedback requires comparable effort to traditional written comments, yet offers greater impact for formative assessments that shape performance on summative …
Rubric Enhanced Assessment Of Coursework And Teaching (React): Using Portfolios And Rubrics In An Engineering Classroom To Refocus From Grades To Learning, Nathan Lee Galinsky
Rubric Enhanced Assessment Of Coursework And Teaching (React): Using Portfolios And Rubrics In An Engineering Classroom To Refocus From Grades To Learning, Nathan Lee Galinsky
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
The goal of using rubrics in an engineering classroom is to make grading clearer for students and to enhance the learning efforts. Point based grading of work leaves students looking for the correct numerical solution or choice without thinking about their assumptions, process, or approximations. A rubric dissects grading to include the entire solution procedure emphasizing key steps in a solution procedure. Students also don’t have to wonder where partial credit will be focused or what emphasis a solution will be graded on when using rubrics. By combining the rubric assessment techniques with portfolios, students will be empowered to feel …
Test Retakes In Introductory Math Courses, John Hird, Chris Mcclain
Test Retakes In Introductory Math Courses, John Hird, Chris Mcclain
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
In this poster, we describe the implementation of an exam retake model using specifications grading for math courses taken by non-STEM majors. This system was implemented by two faculty members over three years in two sequential courses. During that time, we tried several versions of allowed retakes, with varying restrictions on partial credit. Some of the challenges that we faced were scaling the system for use by different faculty members and with different courses, managing faculty workload on writing and grading multiple exams, and managing student expectations.
Utilizing Visual Literacy In Thinking Critically About Children’S Cognitive Development, Andrea Gail Schafer
Utilizing Visual Literacy In Thinking Critically About Children’S Cognitive Development, Andrea Gail Schafer
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
Undergraduate coursework in child development requires college students to be proficient in their understanding and assessment of holistic development of young children as defined within the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Traditionally, undergraduate courses at the 100 and 200 level require college students to critically consider scenarios and evaluate level of child development based on traditional text-based scenarios describing child behaviors or engagement in tasks.
Specifically, considering Piaget's theory of cognitive development (Piaget, 1974), it's critically important in a course that covers early child development that college students (pre-service professionals) be able to identify and correctly assess level of …
Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour
Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
As commonly accepted in upper-level courses, course work should appeal to higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy such as analyze, evaluate, and create (Halupa, 2021). However, course design choices can limit a student’s potential in reaching these higher levels of learning when a preselected number of topics and assignment types are provided by the instructor (Halupa, 2021). Additionally, not all students will thrive with instructor selected assignment design. Instead, instructors can offer a “choose your own adventure” approach to course designs (Sutherland, 2023; Yetter, 2022). Specifically, this has taken the form of allowing students to choose their own assignments within my …
When Prices Spike: Identifying Excessive Volatility In Fertilizer Markets, Feng Yao, Manuel A. Hernandez
When Prices Spike: Identifying Excessive Volatility In Fertilizer Markets, Feng Yao, Manuel A. Hernandez
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Sharp and volatile fertilizer price movements can hinder adoption and reduce agricultural productivity, especially among vulnerable smallholders. Using a nonparametric location-scale approach to model price returns, we quantify the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) - the high return threshold exceeded with low probability - to identify excessive price spikes in potash, urea, and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) markets. We use the bias-corrected estimator from Martins-Filho et al. (2018) and propose a simpler estimator based on Hill (1975). Backtesting results indicate superior performance of the Hill-based estimator, supporting its value as a convenient method for detecting unusual fertilizer price surges amid recurring global volatility.
Nonparametric Estimation Of Smooth Coefficients In Fixed-Effect Panel Data Models, Taining Wang, Feng Yao, Jun Cai
Nonparametric Estimation Of Smooth Coefficients In Fixed-Effect Panel Data Models, Taining Wang, Feng Yao, Jun Cai
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
We propose a kernel-based nonparametric estimator for a smooth coefficient panel data model with fixed effects. Without requiring a zero sum of fixed effects, we propose an estimator that is easy to construct and computationally efficient. Eliminating the fixed effects through a local within transformation, we perform a local linear estimation for the coefficient functions associated with time varying variables and associated derivatives. We further estimate the intercept coefficient function, if present, through a difference of kernel weighted averages. We characterize the estimator’s asymptotic properties under a large-n and large-T framework. We demonstrate that the estimator is not asymptotically equivalent …

Graded Repertoire For Violin By Latin American Composers: Pedagogical Analysis And Categorization Of Selected Pieces, Irene Guerra Rudas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Repertoire sequences have evolved from a collection of technical studies into a comprehensive educational framework. This research aims to enhance the integration of innovative pedagogical materials by identifying, analyzing, and categorizing works originally composed for violin by Latin American composers. These works are assessed for their suitability within a structured violin curriculum and organized into graded levels, ranging from elementary to advanced.
Each selected piece is evaluated according to pedagogical parameters commonly used in established violin teaching traditions. These parameters include pitch range, rhythmic complexity, bow strokes, length, stylistic diversity, musical language, and the historical and cultural relevance of both …

Genomic Variation, Adaptive Evolution, And Invasive And Evolutionary History Of Microstegium Vimineum, Cameron William Corbett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Invasive species can cause environmental and economic damage, but can offer unique opportunities to study rapid evolution and adaptation in novel environments. Microstegium vimineum (stiltgrass) is a prolific invasive grass in the eastern United States. Historical herbaria collections were used to identify patterns of invasion history and population dynamics over a spatial and temporal scale. Analyses of plastid genomes reveal a complex invasion history, including a single introduction in the southern United States linked to Japan and multiple repeated introductions in the northern United States from various source populations. Spread of introduced populations provide evidence of admixture among previously geographically …
Enhancing Chime Data Integrity: Utilizing An Ancillary Antenna To Detect And Mask Radio Frequency Interference, John W. Metzger
Enhancing Chime Data Integrity: Utilizing An Ancillary Antenna To Detect And Mask Radio Frequency Interference, John W. Metzger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) is a radio telescope array designed to map Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and detect Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) within the 400-800 MHz frequency range. However, man-made Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), such as television broadcasts and cellular signals, significantly degrade data integrity and mask weak astronomical signals. This thesis details the design, simulation, and implementation of a slotted waveguide antenna at the Green Bank Outrigger (GBO) to detect and mask RFI. Utilizing cross-correlation, the system identifies similarities between the telescope and the horizon- pointing antenna to isolate interference. Mathematical models were used to determine …
Ornithine Metabolism In Retinal Pigment Epithelium And Retina And Implications In Gyrate Atrophy, Artjola Puja
Ornithine Metabolism In Retinal Pigment Epithelium And Retina And Implications In Gyrate Atrophy, Artjola Puja
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) is a mitochondrial enzyme that regulates ornithine metabolism by converting ornithine to pyrroline-5-carboxylate, a precursor for proline and glutamate synthesis. Deficiency of OAT causes systemic ornithine accumulation and leads to gyrate atrophy (GA) of the choroid and retina, a hereditary disorder characterized by progressive chorioretinal degeneration and irreversible vision loss. Chorioretinal atrophy typically starts at the mid-peripheral retina and progresses toward the macula. Although elevated ornithine is considered toxic to the eye, how ornithine is metabolized in ocular tissues and why OAT deficiency causes selective, region-specific vulnerability remain unclear. We combined ex vivo and in vivo stable …
Graft: Graph-Augmented Framework With Vision Transformers For Multi-Label Classification, Ghazaleh Mirzaee
Graft: Graph-Augmented Framework With Vision Transformers For Multi-Label Classification, Ghazaleh Mirzaee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multi-label classification of thoracic diseases from chest X-ray images poses a distinctive challenge: patients rarely present with a single isolated pathology, and automated systems must identify multiple co-occurring conditions simultaneously from a single radiograph. Standard classification architectures treat each disease label as an independent binary decision, failing to capture the statistical co-occurrence patterns, spatial anatomical relationships, and visual feature similarities that characterize multi-disease presentations in clinical data. Class imbalance and incomplete labels compound these problems. In NIH ChestX-ray14, the rarest pathological class has only 227 training instances, and many co-occurring conditions go unlabeled because radiologists focus their reports on the …
Multimodal Representation Learning For Face Understanding: From Caption Supervision To Foundation Model Adaptation, Md Mahedi Hasan
Multimodal Representation Learning For Face Understanding: From Caption Supervision To Foundation Model Adaptation, Md Mahedi Hasan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The rapid advancement of intelligent surveillance systems and the increasing demand for reliable biometric identification in border security, public safety, and digital forensics require robust face understanding under unconstrained conditions, including low resolution, pose variation, and occlusion. While Vision Transformer (ViT)-based foundation models have greatly improved visual representation learning, their patch-based tokenization and lack of spatial inductive bias limit their ability to capture fine-grained details in low-resolution inputs. This dissertation investigates multimodal representation learning for face understanding through natural language supervision, large-scale face-caption pre-training, and parameter-efficient foundation model adaptation. It hypothesizes that textual supervision provides complementary semantic cues that improve …
Deep Learning-Based Co-Current Upward Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Regime Identification In An Annular Conduit, Joshua Robert Macomber
Deep Learning-Based Co-Current Upward Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Regime Identification In An Annular Conduit, Joshua Robert Macomber
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Flow regime identification in co-current upward gas-liquid flow through annular conduits remains a significant challenge in petroleum engineering, with major safety and operational implications. It is also important across industries involving the transport of multiphase fluids. Misidentifying flow regimes can introduce major operational risk, yet regime boundaries in annular gas-liquid flow are often visually complex and context dependent.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers for flow regime identification. The CNN was trained using annular flow image dataset published by Texas A&M University. The dataset consists of approximately 947 RGB images …
