The Role Of The Glucocorticoids And Insulin In The Regulation Of Hepatic Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Deborah J. Stumpo
The Role Of The Glucocorticoids And Insulin In The Regulation Of Hepatic Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Deborah J. Stumpo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of my research project was to examine how insulin and the glucocorticoids, alone, and in combination, regulate hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) at the level of functional mRNA coding for G6PD. The model system I utilized for these studies was primary cultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells. These cells were maintained in a serum-free and chemically defined medium so that direct effects of added hormones on the hepatocytes could be ascertained. Dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, when added alone did not have an effect on G6PD activity. Insulin caused about a 1.6-fold increase in enzyme activity, and when …
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study approaches the problem of the relation of man and nature in William Wordsworth's The Prelude from the phenomenological perspective developed in Martin Heidegger's early work, Being and Time. More specifically, I attempt to work out a detailed comparison between Wordsworth's description of nature as an environing and supporting presence and Heidegger's notion of "world" as an irreducible component of human existence. In contrast to most philosophically oriented critics of The Prelude, who locate Wordsworth's ideas within the metaphysical context of English empiricism or continental transcendentalism and idealism, I argue that the structure of experience presented in ThePrelude actually …

Arsenite In Soils: Analytical Determination, Sorption-Desorption Reactions And Sorption Kinetics (Elevich Equation, Differential Pulse, Polarography)., Elsayed Ahmed Elkhatib
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A technique was developed for the determination of total arsenic (As) in soil using differential pulse polarography. Soil samples were digested with a combination of HNO(,3) and H(,2)SO(,4). Total As was determined in M HCl after reduction of As(V) to As(III) with hydrazine sulfate. Soil and fly ash standards were analyzed by this method and agreement within one standard deviation between replicates was obtained. Approximately 99% recovery of As was obtained from spiked soil samples. Differential pulse polarography is also quite useful for the rapid determination of arsenite in solution during studies of As sorption - desorption by soils. A …

Bankruptcy Reform And The Constitution: Retroactive Application Of Section 522(F)(2) Takes Private Property, James B. Craven Iii, Pamela A. Bates-Smith
West Virginia Law Review
Bankruptcy is premised in part on the desire to allow individuals to retain enough assets to begin life over. As part of this premise, Congress enacted section 522(f)(2) of the Bankruptcy Act of 1978. This provision allows debtors to avoid nonpossessory, nonpurchase money security interests in otherwise exempt property. This provision has created problems, however, as debtors have argued that it acts retroactively to void security interests created before the Act's enactment date. In Rodrock v. Security Industrial Bank, the Supreme Court will decide whether Congress intended such retroactive application to occur, and if it did, whether such action constitutes …

The phthalate acid esters (PAEs), and, in particular, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and its monoester, monoethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), can adversely affect rodent testes but only at high doses. Rat gonadal zinc levels can be decreased by the injection of DEHP, but not MEHP. The rat prostate gland seems to be particularly sensitive to PAE-induced zinc depletion. PAE-induced changes in male reproductive organs were more evident in the rat than in the mouse. Some of the effects of MEHP can be demonstrated in vitro since it can alter the uptake of 65Zn in rodent gonads and accessory sex organs.

Effects Of Dopamine Norepinephrine, Serotonin And Estradiol-17-Beta On Secretion Of Luteinizing Hormone And Prolactin In The Ewe., Daniel Robert Deaver
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Four studies were conducted to determine effects of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and estradiol-17(beta) on secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in ewes. In the first study, tonic and LHRH-induced secretion of LH was affected by intravenous infusion of DA, NE and 5-HT in a dose-dependent manner in ovariectomized ewes. Responses of LH to increasing doses of DA and 5-HT were biphasic and slopes of dose-response curves between catecholamines and 5-HT were opposite. Secretion of PRL was inhibited by DA and NE but not affected by 5-HT. In anestrous ewes no effects of DA, NE and …

Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Schmidt (1975) and Weinberg, Guy, and Tupper (1964) have expressed the expectation that post-KR delays in simple to complex motor tasks must increase as task complexity increases if the rate of acquisition is to be maintained. This study was an attempt to investigate that prediction. Nine treatment conditions were established by the interaction of three levels of post-KR delay with three levels of task complexity. Volunteer subjects (N = 10 for each treatment condition) were male undergraduate and graduate students at West Virginia University during the summer of 1979. Twenty trials were received by each subject; the first ten were …

Factors Modulating The Secretion Of Thyrotropin And Other Hormones Of The Thyroid Axis., G A. Hedge, K C. Wright, A Judd
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The first portion of this paper is devoted to an overview of the normal function of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis. This section emphasizes areas of current research interest and it identifies several sites and mechanisms that are potentially important interfaces with toxins or toxic mechanisms. We then describe an in vitro technique for the continuous superfusion of enzymatically dispersed pituitary cells; this approach is particularly valuable in studying the dynamics of the TSH responses to the factors known (or suspected) to regulate TSH secretion in vivo. Using this technique, we have found that 10(-5)M prostaglandin (PG)I2 stimulates TSH secretion without altering …

Although various animal tissues are used for bioassay of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2), a rapid bioassay dependent upon a plant part's response does not exist. Both pollen germination (G) and tube elongation (TE) were enhanced in a 3.0 mM KH2PO4 (K)-containing but AFB1-lacking, modified Dickinson's medium. The B1 did not affect G when K was withheld but K supplementation impaired G above 15 micrograms/ml B1. Without K, 5-20 stimulated but 25 and 30 micrograms/ml B1 inhibited TE which was suppressed by every B1 conc tested in K-containing medium. Addition of NaH2PO4(N) instead of K to medium did not promote …
Chemical Suppression Of Steroidogenesis., H D. Colby
Chemical Suppression Of Steroidogenesis., H D. Colby
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A large number of chemicals are known to interfere with steroidogenesis in the adrenal cortex and other tissues. Many xenobiotics inhibit steroid hormone production as a result of interactions with cytochrome P-450-containing hydroxylases in adrenal mitochondria or microsomes. For example, metyrapone, a compound used clinically in the evaluation of pituitary-adrenocortical function, binds to various cytochromes P-450 in the adrenal, preventing the interactions of steroid substrates with the enzymes and inhibiting steroidogenesis. The mineralocorticoid antagonist, spironolactone, and its major circulating metabolite, canrenone, also competitively interact with adrenal steroid hydroxylases. In addition, spironolactone is converted by adrenal microsomes to an unknown metabolite …

The purpose of this study was to examine the categorization behaviors of a group of children at age four, seven, and ten years. The study was designed to conduct basic research in the area of concept formation, and was exploratory in the sense that it sought to define specific levels and strategies of categorization. The main effects of sex, socioeconomic status, age, and response type were investigated. Research findings were sought to support a modification of current cognitive theory in the areas of concept formation and categorical structuring. Related purposes dealt with the examination of preferred classification strategies within specific …

A History Of Game Preservation In British East Africa, 1895-1963., Thomas Paul Ofcansky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
East Africa's wildlife is justly famous. This study examines the difficulty of preserving large numbers of wild animals in societies committed to widespread and rapid economic development. In Kenya the colonial administration had to devise a policy that would enable a rapidly expanding European settler community to live side by side with hundreds of thousands of potentially destructive wild animals. As far as Uganda was concerned, the authorities had to prevent the country's elephant herds from destroying agricultural crops without destroying them. Tanganyika's situation was even more complex. A large number of European and African farmers believed that the only …

The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most musical instruments of Western European culture have been studied and defined; however, no systematic study has yet been made for the instrument commonly known as the rebec (or rebeck). General reference sources and musicological studies which mention the rebec often provide discrepant, vague, and erroneous information. The current interest in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music and the reproduction of instruments upon which this music might have been played has created a need, among performers and instrument makers, for specific, primary source information concerning the rebec. The use of the rebec in Western Europe can be documented through …
Problems Associated With The Management Of Solid Wastes: Is There A Solution In The Offing, Jeffrey M. Wakefield
Problems Associated With The Management Of Solid Wastes: Is There A Solution In The Offing, Jeffrey M. Wakefield
West Virginia Law Review
Within the past decade, the level of environmental consciousness within our society has increased appreciably with the recognition of how delicate the ecological balance is and how easily it may be disrupted. Such consciousness has manifested itself primarily in stricter standards governing the emission of pollutants into the air and water. Unfortunately, this justifiable preoccupation with the quality of our air and water has overshadowed the needless desecration of America's land resources through the inadequate and environmentally unsound practices associated with the disposal of solid wastes. The purposes of this Note are to identify the scope of the solid waste …
