Designing King Lear: How Costume Design for a Theatrical Production is Affected by a Transition to Film

Jacob Steven Currence

William Shakespeare’s King Lear was written in 1606, and it recounts the folktale of a king losing his power and sanity. Several hundred years later, in 2022, West Virginia Public Broadcasting aired the West Virginia University School of Theatre & Dance production of King Lear. As costume designer for the play, it was my task to depict King Lear’s decline through his wardrobe. My costume work needed to reflect his descent into madness and ultimate loss of power. Moreover, this …

Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael And Outlines Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1941-1947, Sydney Michelle Pascarella Jan 2023

Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael And Outlines Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1941-1947, Sydney Michelle Pascarella

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1941, Elizabeth Rockwell (1920-1998) opened Outlines, a modern art gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Outlines would come to have one of the most impressive chronologies of a modern art gallery of its time, however it receives little to no attention in any type of academic history. Rockwell herself was an important figure in Pittsburgh, had the ability to understand avant-garde art, but also to solve problems within her community. Rockwell was curating shows of similar caliber of those produced by her peer, Peggy Guggenheim, however, she does not share the same level of fame. In this thesis, I will discuss …

Effects Of Aripiprazole Alone And In Combination With D-Amphetamine On Probability Discounting In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Paige Currie Jan 2023

Effects Of Aripiprazole Alone And In Combination With D-Amphetamine On Probability Discounting In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Paige Currie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pharmaceuticals are helpful tools in aiding individuals with psychiatric diagnoses. Sometimes, the drug’s side effects can be more severe than the initial problem. Maladaptive behaviors, like pathological gambling, overeating, and substance abuse, are important to consider during the prescription of different pharmaceuticals, particularly those used to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Individuals with these diagnoses are often prescribed: stimulants, like d-amphetamine (d-AMP; for symptoms associated with ADHD), and antipsychotics, like aripiprazole (ARI; for symptoms associated with ASD). These drugs in combination could influence maladaptive behavior, including risky choice (probability discounting). The present study …

Lipid Binding Properties Of Huntingtin As A Novel Therapeutic Target, Chathuranga Siriwardhana Jan 2023

Lipid Binding Properties Of Huntingtin As A Novel Therapeutic Target, Chathuranga Siriwardhana

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As protein aggregation is the defining hallmark of all amyloid diseases, a common therapeutic strategy is to develop molecules that inhibit aggregation. However, this approach has yielded limited success. Many amyloid proteins directly interact with lipid membranes. These interactions promote distinct aggregation pathways and often result in membrane damage leading to toxicity. As a result, directly targeting the ability of amyloids to bind lipid membranes represents a novel therapeutic strategy. As a proof of principle, the interaction between lipid membranes and mutant huntingtin protein (htt) aggregates was used to test this strategy. Mutant htt containing an expanded polygulatmine (polyQ) domain …

Spin Recovery Analysis On A Simulation Model Of The Nasa F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle (Harv) Using Thrust Vectoring, Brock M. Dolly Jan 2023

Spin Recovery Analysis On A Simulation Model Of The Nasa F-18 High Alpha Research Vehicle (Harv) Using Thrust Vectoring, Brock M. Dolly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the early years of aviation, spins were poorly understood and frequently fatal. With just over a century of research and experiments dedicated to spins, today’s aviation world has a very firm grasp on spin aerodynamics. Most fighter aircraft have airframes and control surfaces specifically designed to ensure the ability of departure from the possible spin modes the aircraft can enter. An alternative and/or additional approach is given by thrust vectoring. Implementing thrust vectoring into spin recovery can potentially save an aircraft and/or the life of the pilot in situation where control-surface-only spin recovery is not able to recover the …

Assessing Forest Features And Nocturnal Flying Insect Diversity As Predictors Of Eastern Whip-Poor-Will Occupancy In Foraging Habitat, Clark D. Alexander Jan 2023

Assessing Forest Features And Nocturnal Flying Insect Diversity As Predictors Of Eastern Whip-Poor-Will Occupancy In Foraging Habitat, Clark D. Alexander

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus), an insectivorous caprimulgid, have seen an approximate 2.76% annual population decrease since the 1960s, with their breeding and foraging ecology largely unknown due to their nocturnal and cryptic behavior. I conducted research to assess abiotic and biotic variables correlated with detection, and occupancy probability, and prey species diversity on ~104,000 hectares of forest in West Virginia, owned by the private timber company Weyerhaeuser. Previous literature indicates that Eastern whip-poor-will, and their prey, require ephemeral habitat such as recently cleared and early successional forests, like those historically created by forest fires, wind shears, hurricanes, and …

Concentrated Wastewater Treatment Using A Ferric Iron-Dosed Anaerobic Upflow Sludge Blanket Reactor For Recovery Of Phosphorus And Ammonium, Carley E. Shingleton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study evaluated the performance of a novel, ferric iron-dosed anaerobic bioreactor to recover two separate nutrient products from concentrated wastewaters -- phosphorus as vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2×8H2O) and an ammonium-containing effluent with low organics. A bench-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor fed with a synthetic wastewater (458.0 mg/L total organic carbon, 282.7 mg/L ammonium, and 84.4 mg/L phosphate) was dosed with a ferric chloride solution at an org. C/Fe3+ molar ratio ~17.5 to facilitate organic carbon oxidation coupled to iron reduction. The reactor design allowed natural settling of vivianite to its …

Effects Of Development On Hpa Function Following Pubertal Stress, Brittany D. Elliott Jan 2023

Effects Of Development On Hpa Function Following Pubertal Stress, Brittany D. Elliott

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For women, two of the greatest risk factors for affective disorders are adversity experienced during puberty and later becoming pregnant. We have created a translationally relevant mouse model where we address these complex risk factors. Previously, we discovered that pregnant mice (dams) that experienced chronic variable stress (CVS) during puberty display a blunted hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) response when exposed to an acute stressor. Interestingly, this alteration only first becomes apparent during pregnancy, which is a sensitive period for these effects due to normative neuroendocrine changes. Further investigation of the mechanisms underlying this dysfunction revealed altered gene expression in the paraventricular nucleus …

Evaluation Of Renewal During Differential Reinforcement With Asymmetrical Choices And A Context Fading Mitigation Technique, Kacey R. Finch Jan 2023

Evaluation Of Renewal During Differential Reinforcement With Asymmetrical Choices And A Context Fading Mitigation Technique, Kacey R. Finch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Successful clinical behavior analytic treatment often results in decreases in challenging behavior and increases in appropriate behavior. These reductions in challenging behavior are often achieved by implementing differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA; Petscher et al., 2009). One variation of DRA to decrease challenging behavior is differential reinforcement with asymmetrical choices, which are two or more concurrently available response options associated with differential outcomes (Fisher & Mazur, 1997; Kestner et al., 2023). However, responding that was previously reduced sometimes reemerges. Specifically, renewal is the reemergence of a previously reduced response following a context change. The first two experiments evaluated renewal …

Epistemological Insecurity In The Anthropocene, Dustin Purvis Jan 2023

Epistemological Insecurity In The Anthropocene, Dustin Purvis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes how increased mainstream awareness of climate change and other complex environmental phenomena transforms some of the basic tools we use to understand the world, including notions of agency, evidence, and causality. More specifically, this project highlights numerous contemporary literary and cultural narratives that formally and thematically depict impromptu systems of action and comprehension developed by humans confronting the unique forms of information overload that result from damaged and rapidly changing environments. Following critics like Ulrich Beck, Rob Nixon, and Stacy Alaimo, I suggest our current era of ecological instability and destructive environmental practices dictate what I refer …

The Effect Of Pubertal Stress On Prefrontal Cortex Related Behavior In Adult And Adolescent Mice, Bryan Rodriguez Jan 2023

The Effect Of Pubertal Stress On Prefrontal Cortex Related Behavior In Adult And Adolescent Mice, Bryan Rodriguez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is an area of associated with cognitive flexibility, decision making, and value processing. The most common neuropsychiatric disorders globally, including generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse disorders, have been associated with dysfunction in the PFC. One of the environmental factors that may lead to increased risk for developing these disorders is exposure to stressful or traumatic situations during key developmental periods, such as adolescence. Human studies found that individuals who were faced with early adverse events but had some form of social interaction or support during that time, had a lower risk …

Effects Of Oxycodone And Methylphenidate On Self-Control With Aversive Outcomes, Jeremy Saul Langford Jan 2023

Effects Of Oxycodone And Methylphenidate On Self-Control With Aversive Outcomes, Jeremy Saul Langford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the context of choice, one is said to show self-control under numerous conditions in which consideration is given to the delayed outcomes of each option. This can be difficult: both reinforcing and aversive outcomes become less effective as they are increasingly delayed. Several socially significant issues arise from a failure of delayed, aversive outcomes to impact choice, especially when immediate, reinforcing outcomes are available. Identifying the conditions under which choice is sensitive to delayed outcomes is critical to shifting choices toward alternatives in which contact with delayed, aversive outcomes is minimized. Two experiments were conducted with the aim of …

Exploring The Biological Basis Of Residual Feed Intake In Beef Cattle Using Multi-Omics Analysis., Godstime Ayobami Taiwo Jan 2023

Exploring The Biological Basis Of Residual Feed Intake In Beef Cattle Using Multi-Omics Analysis., Godstime Ayobami Taiwo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Efficient feed utilization is critical for both economic sustainability and environmental responsibility in modern livestock production. While there has been extensive research, the multifaceted nature of feed efficiency remains complex, with many biological factors still unexplored. This dissertation examines the physiological foundations of feed efficiency by elucidating some of the complex biological mechanisms associated with residual feed intake (RFI) phenotype in beef cattle, using a range of Omics approaches. We hypothesized that metabolites related to amino acids, carbohydrates, and fatty acids could act as potential biomarkers for RFI. Through a chemical group-based metabolomics method, we identified enriched pathways in feed-efficient …

Organizing (Eternal) Identity And Identification: An Upward Glance Into Religious Institutions, Casey M. Stratton Jan 2023

Organizing (Eternal) Identity And Identification: An Upward Glance Into Religious Institutions, Casey M. Stratton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation disrupts at least two religious spaces: First, scholars religiously adhering to (social) scientific norms, and second, people identifying with religious organizations (i.e., churches). First, we begin constructing a theoretical lens using poststructural ideas offered by Foucault, Derrida, and Bakhtin to read and disrupt (religious) discourse. Second, we complicate organizational identification as a concept, deeming it fixed and fluid—a paradox within religious discourses that endorse Truth and Perfection. Here, we draw from the communication constitutes organization (CCO) approach. Third, we further curate the lens by applying poststructuralism, identification, and CCO in a specific context: The Church of Jesus Christ …

A Comparison Of Endodontic Root-End Filling Techniques: A Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis, Leslie P. Wolford Jan 2023

A Comparison Of Endodontic Root-End Filling Techniques: A Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis, Leslie P. Wolford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction:

Researchers have compared the differences between hand compaction of root-end filling bioceramics with compaction of these materials by hand followed by ultrasonic activation (hand/ultrasonic compaction). Additionally, most of these researchers did not utilize Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) analysis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate total porosity volume of three different bioceramics when compacted by hand alone versus hand/ultrasonic compaction using Micro-CT Analysis.

Materials and methods:

Seventy-two human maxillary central incisors were selected for the study. All were subjected to orthograde endodontic treatment followed by root tip resection 3-mm from the apex at a 90° to the long axis …

Copper-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Decarboxylation Reactions Of Carboxylic Acids To Alkenes, Michael P. Stanton Jan 2023

Copper-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Decarboxylation Reactions Of Carboxylic Acids To Alkenes, Michael P. Stanton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Linear alpha olefins (LAOs) are important building blocks in the production of linear low-density polyethylene, a plastic used in products such as shrink wraps, plastic bags, tubing, plasticizers, among others. Commercial methods for generating LAOs utilize ethylene oligomerization, but this method is reliant on fossil fuels and leads to unselective product formation. Synthesis of LAOs from renewable resources, namely carboxylic acids, by decarbonylative dehydration strategies has been well studied, however, this method has inherent drawbacks rooted in the formation of internal olefin side-products through isomerization pathways. With the goal of avoiding internal isomerization, this thesis explores a dehydrogenative decarboxylation strategy …

Nature Based Interventions For Human Health And Wellbeing, Samantha I. Moyers Jan 2023

Nature Based Interventions For Human Health And Wellbeing, Samantha I. Moyers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Nature exposure is beneficial to human health and wellbeing, but the evidence base for nature-based interventions (NBI) is still developing. Heterogeneous naming conventions, study designs, and intervention contexts create difficulty in accessing and assessing the evidence for such programming. While NBI have been utilized in a wide array of human populations, no interventions have been reported among clinical health professions students. Aims. The objectives of this dissertation project were to review the existing body of NBI literature exploring health and wellbeing outcomes, and to conduct a feasibility trial of forest bathing, a type of NBI, among clinical students. Specifically, …

Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers Jan 2023

Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coenzyme A (CoA) is a crucial cofactor required to support many essential metabolic processes, including fatty acid oxidation and synthesis, the TCA cycle, and bile acid synthesis. In order to support the proper functioning of these pathways, CoA levels within the cell must be properly regulated. The regulation of CoA levels is achieved through a balance between CoA synthesis and CoA degradation. While the regulation of CoA synthesis has been extensively characterized, the degradation of CoA has received less attention. As such, the contribution of CoA degradation to the regulation of metabolism is poorly understood. NUDT7 is a CoA-specific Nudix …

Shear Bond Strength Comparison Of Bioceramics To Root Dentin., Yasmin Alma Hoffman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to compare the push-out bond strength of four bioceramic materials to root dentin that are used during regenerative endodontics. The bioceramics being tested are: 1. Biodentine®(Septodont); 2. EndoSequence BC Putty Fast Set® (Brasseler); 3. NeoPutty® (Avalon Biomed); and 4. ProRoot MTA White® (Dentsply). A high bond strength of a bioceramic material to root dentin will provide excellent seal. An improved seal may correlate with less potential for contamination of the pulp space that is undergoing regenerative activity. This in turn will lead to long-term clinical success. The null hypothesis is that there is …

The weight changes, survival/mortality rates, and proximate compositions of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm) larvae whose diets were supplemented with apple pomace were analyzed after a 4-week feeding study to examine the nutritional quality of the insects for use as a future potential food source. Going forward, the terms “mealworm(s)”, "yellow mealworm(s)”, “T. molitor” will be used interchangeably and will always refer to the same species. The mealworm larvae were randomly divided into two groups: in addition to standard worm chow, one group was given 15 g/week of non-nutritive water-storing polymer crystals and the other was given apple pomace …

The Development Of A New Pertussis Booster Formulation Via The Implementation Of New Adjuvants And Utilization Of Alternate Routes Of Administration, Megan Ashley Dejong Jan 2023

The Development Of A New Pertussis Booster Formulation Via The Implementation Of New Adjuvants And Utilization Of Alternate Routes Of Administration, Megan Ashley Dejong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a respiratory disease caused by airborne transmission of the Gram-negative bacterium, Bordetella pertussis. Prior to the development of the first pertussis vaccines (whole cell (wP) vaccines), the incidence of pertussis was in the hundreds of thousands of cases per year, which led to the death of many children, as the infection is most severe in younger populations. Thankfully, the wP formulation resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of annual pertussis cases, nearly eradicating the disease. However, as wP contained the whole B. pertussis bacterium (and its lipooligosaccharide (LOS)), reactogenicity issues became apparent, leading …

Spatial Distribution And Insect Associations Of Frangula Alnus In The Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania: Implications For Management, Jennifer S. Greenleaf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus) (Rosales: Rhamnaceae) is an invasive European shrub that threatens to displace native vegetation in roadsides and disturbed forests in North America due to its lack of natural enemies, long leaf-out periods, and its ability to survive in a multitude of soil conditions. While well understood in its native range, information regarding F. alnus in North America is lacking. Currently, the management of this invasive shrub relies on an understanding of where it can be found and thus where treatments should be applied. This research investigated the spatial distribution patterns of F. alnus and profiled …

Birds are integral components of ecosystems and account for billions of dollars in tangible benefits to humans. As such, recent continental declines of bird species have ecological and economic consequences, providing the impetus for my dissertation research. I identified knowledge gaps and proposed novel questions about how birds in the Appalachian Mountains are influenced by changing environmental conditions due to climate change and forest management. The Appalachian Mountains encompass an important biogeographical region with high conservation value due to its myriad habitats and corresponding bird species diversity. Thus, there is a critical need to evaluate the effects of shifting climate …

Role Of Cytochrome P450-Epoxygenases And Adenosine A2a Receptor In The Modulation Of Vascular Response, Stephanie Onyeka Agba Jan 2023

Role Of Cytochrome P450-Epoxygenases And Adenosine A2a Receptor In The Modulation Of Vascular Response, Stephanie Onyeka Agba

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and endothelial dysfunction is a major precursor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Arachidonic acids in the vascular endothelial membrane are metabolized by the cytochrome P450-epoxygenases (CYP-2Js and 2Cs) to produce epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EETs). These anti-inflammatory metabolites or oxylipins have been shown to be cardio-protective against ischemic/reperfusion injury and mediate vasodilation through hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells. However, the enzyme called soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), mainly hydrolyzes EETs to its inactive form (DHETs) and an increase in sEH upregulates Angiotensin-II type1-receptor and facilitates endothelial dysfunction.

we previously showed vascular …

Vaping With Nicotine During Pregnancy Affects Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, Sydney Alexis Nassabeh Jan 2023

Vaping With Nicotine During Pregnancy Affects Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, Sydney Alexis Nassabeh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Electronic cigarette (E-cig) use during pregnancy has grown in popularity due to the marketing of these devices as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes. However, nicotine is a constituent in cigarettes that is cause for concern and is also present in a majority of E-cig devices. Little has been reported regarding the implications of E-cig use with nicotine during pregnancy on offspring health outcomes. This study tested the hypothesis that in-utero exposure to nicotine-containing E-cig aerosol would result in a wattage-dependent increase in vascular endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffening that would persist throughout the lifespan of the offspring. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats …

Exploration Of Metal-Carbonyl Complexes For Decarbonylation Reactions, Rebekah C. Krupa Jan 2023

Exploration Of Metal-Carbonyl Complexes For Decarbonylation Reactions, Rebekah C. Krupa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years, transition metal-mediated decarbonylation reactions have emerged as an alternative to conventional cross-coupling methods due to the advantages associated with the use of carbonyl-containing functionalities as coupling electrophiles instead of organohalides found in traditional cross-coupling reactions. This, coupled with the ubiquity of carbonyl-containing compounds in pharmaceuticals and non-biodegradable chemicals, has led to the interest in developing efficient systems for transition metal-catalyzed decarbonylation. However, these reactions are commonly limited to stoichiometric amounts of metal reagents due to the strong metal-carbonyl bond formed during transition metal-mediated decarbonylation. With the goal of gaining a better mechanistic understanding of CO dissociation in …

A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen Jan 2023

A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fish kills, increased disease prevalence, and endocrine disruption have been observed in multiple freshwater fish populations of the Chesapeake Bay watershed (CBW). Some of these health issues occur in conjunction with declining abundance. A combination of multiple stressors is believed to be weakening sensitive fish species in non-tidal regions of the CBW. Fish health indices such as Deformity, Erosion, Lesion, and Tumor counts (DELTs), and the Health Assessment Index (HAI) are simple tools designed to evaluate the general health of fish populations. Both indices could be widely applied in the watershed because they require limited training and equipment. However, their …
