The Potential Impact Of Art Therapy Approaches In An Alternative Learning School Setting In Urban West Virginia, Brianna Saddler Jan 2017

The Potential Impact Of Art Therapy Approaches In An Alternative Learning School Setting In Urban West Virginia, Brianna Saddler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Now more than ever American adolescents are suffering from severe anxiety (Lewis, 2017). In the past, over-achieving students were those parents least worried about when it came to experiencing anxiety but now studies show these students are just as likely to experience anxiety as those learners considered to be underachievers. The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader how art therapy approaches embedded into daily lesson plans could be used in alternative learning school settings to help students deal with anxiety. Through my own experiences as a practicing art teacher in both general education art classrooms and alternative …

A Conductor's Perspective On Stravinsky's "Danse Sacrale" From "Le Sacre Du Printemps": Evaluation Of Revisions, Analysis And Considerations For Conducting, Hanjin Sa Jan 2017

A Conductor's Perspective On Stravinsky's "Danse Sacrale" From "Le Sacre Du Printemps": Evaluation Of Revisions, Analysis And Considerations For Conducting, Hanjin Sa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The final dance, Danse sacrale from the ballet Le Sacre du printemps by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) presents various challenges for conductors: both textual and technical. For the textual challenges, this research paper focuses on the comparative studies of various revisions, the early sketchbook, and the autograph full score. The study of correspondence between Stravinsky and the early conductors of Le Sacre (Pierre Monteux and Ernest Ansermet) also offers important clues for solving the puzzle with which Stravinsky himself had struggled for decades.;Both the 1943-revised version and Nicholas Slonimsky's re-barring of the Danse sacrale will be closely examined. Despite Stravinsky's wish …

Characterizing The Mechanisms Of Insulin Resistance In Dairy Cattle, Amanda Nicole Davis Jan 2017

Characterizing The Mechanisms Of Insulin Resistance In Dairy Cattle, Amanda Nicole Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dairy cows transitioning from gestation to lactation experience insulin resistance as maternal adaptation to partition nutrients toward the mammary gland to support milk production. Insulin resistance causes increased lipolysis and free fatty acid (FFA) release into circulation. Unfortunately, this metabolic adaptation occurs during a time when energy demands are heightened and cows are already experiencing negative energy balance. As a result, accelerated hepatic FFA influx promotes hepatic triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation and ketogenesis, which can cause postpartum metabolic disease. In diabetic monogastrics, mechanisms that mediate insulin resistance involve the sphingolipid ceramide. The role of ceramide in insulin signaling in dairy cows …

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Treatment Integrity Errors On Skill Acquisition During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jennifer M. Owsiany Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Treatment Integrity Errors On Skill Acquisition During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jennifer M. Owsiany

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous research has demonstrated that delivering controlling prompts and reinforcers with low-levels of treatment integrity may interfere with the acquisition of skills during discrete-trial instruction. However, implementing certain components of discrete-trial instruction with varying levels of low integrity may influence skill acquisition differently. In Experiment 1, we evaluated the effects of delivering a prompt following participants' incorrect responses with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% integrity on skill acquisition with two children with autism spectrum disorder. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of delivering a reinforcer following participants' correct responses with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% integrity on skill acquisition …

Fear Of Pain And Dental Care-Related Fear: Associations With The Mc1r Gene, Cameron L. Randall Jan 2017

Fear Of Pain And Dental Care-Related Fear: Associations With The Mc1r Gene, Cameron L. Randall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fear of pain is experienced in acute and chronic pain populations, as well as generally, and impacts numerous aspects of the pain experience, including pain intensity, pain-related disability, and pain behavior (e.g., avoidance). A related but separate construct, dental care-related fear, also is experienced in the general population, and impacts dental treatment-seeking behavior and oral and systemic health. Very minimal work has addressed the role of genetics in the etiologies of fear of pain and dental care-related fear. Limited available data suggest that variants of the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene may predict greater levels of dental care-related fear. The MC1R …

Implications Of Primary Cilia And Associated Lysophosphatidic Acid Signaling In Glioblastoma Biology And Therapy, Yuriy V. Loskutov Jan 2017

Implications Of Primary Cilia And Associated Lysophosphatidic Acid Signaling In Glioblastoma Biology And Therapy, Yuriy V. Loskutov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary cilium is a ubiquitous organelle presented on most human cells. It serves as a crucial signaling hub for multiple pathways including growth factor and G-protein coupled receptors. Loss of primary cilia was observed in various cancers, however, the implications of this event are unclear. Several studies show that loss of cilia promotes cell proliferation, suggesting that alteration of ciliary-dependent signaling can drive the hyperproliferative phenotype of cancer cells, therefore re-establishing primary cilia or targeting altered signaling pathways could be a beneficial strategy as an anti-cancer therapy.;Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the deadliest cancers with a median survival of …

Where The Earth Breathes Inside: The Attitudes Of Lakota People Toward Wind Cave National Park, Adam Rossi Jan 2017

Where The Earth Breathes Inside: The Attitudes Of Lakota People Toward Wind Cave National Park, Adam Rossi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Wind Cave National Park, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, has a long and complex history concerning local indigenous peoples, including the Lakotas. Wind Cave is the location of the Lakotas' traditional origin story, and is now protected by a park that represents a federal government that many indigenous peoples of this country view negatively. Despite this, no study has attempted to characterize attitudes of local indigenous people towards the park. Recommendations from an earlier study encourage the park to collaborate closely with local indigenous tribes, and it would be beneficial for the park to have an understanding …

Cardiac And Mitochondrial Dysfunction During Diabetes Mellitus: Examination Of Mitochondrial Import Mechanisms, Danielle Lee Shepherd Jan 2017

Cardiac And Mitochondrial Dysfunction During Diabetes Mellitus: Examination Of Mitochondrial Import Mechanisms, Danielle Lee Shepherd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 9% of the United States population is diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM), which is comprised of 2 distinct pathologies: type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T1DM, which is caused by insufficient insulin production, affects approximately 5% of diabetic patients, while T2DM results from insulin resistance and affects 95% of all diabetic patients. Within diabetic patients, cardiac complications, such as diabetic cardiomyopathy, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The mitochondrion has been implicated as an underlying factor in the etiology and progression of the cardiac contractile deficits and cardiac failure that accompany DM. …

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks Jan 2017

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) program is authorized by the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) to pursue compensation for injury to, or destruction and loss of, natural resources. Fish are an important "natural resource" present in almost all aquatic ecosystems. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a hazardous substance and have been shown to cause harm to fish (and fish-eating animals). A series of investigations were conducted to determine if "injury" had occurred to creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and in one study, the fish community that creek chubs were a part of, …

A Work Flow And Evaluation Of Using Unmanned Aerial Systems For Deriving Forest Stand Characteristics In Mixed Hardwoods Of West Virginia, Henry Liebermann

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forest inventory information is a principle driver for forest management decisions. Information gathered through these inventories provides a summary of the condition of forested stands. The method by which remote sensing aids land managers is changing rapidly. Imagery produced from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offer high temporal and spatial resolutions and have added another approach to small-scale forest management. UAS imagery is less expensive and easier to coordinate to meet project needs compared to traditional manned aerial imagery. This study focused on producing an efficient and approachable work flow for producing forest stand board foot volume estimates from UAS imagery …

Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan Jan 2017

Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined the effect of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) on peripheral microvessel function in healthy and metabolic syndrome (MetS) rodents, and whether exercise training could prevent the vascular dysfunction associated with UCMS. Our initial hypothesis was that: 1) LZRs exposed to UCMS would have peripheral microvascular dysfunction similar to that evident in the OZRs controls due to a reduction in NO bioavailability and an increase in ROS production; 2) the comorbidity between MetS exposed to UCMS will exacerbate the already existing peripheral microvascular dysfunction; 3) exercise could limit the peripheral microvascular dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress and …

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich Jan 2017

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Demand for animal proteins is increasing worldwide, spurring an increase in forage based agricultural production. Forage based agriculture utilizes grass and legume crops from areas which are not suited for row-crop production to feed ruminant animals. These systems provide increased animal proteins to consumer markets, while using minimal amounts of cereal crops that would otherwise be used for human consumption. However, forage based agriculture does not come without a risk of environmental degradation. The US EPA determined that agriculture non-point source (NPS) pollution is among the top three causes of phosphorus (P) related surface water impairment and accounts for an …

Diversity And Function Of Fungi Associated With The Fungivorous Millipede, Brachycybe Lecontii, Angie M. Macias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brachycybe (Wood) is a genus of fungivorous millipedes. To date, the fungal associates of these millipedes have never been characterized. In an attempt to resolve these relationships, culture-based approaches combined with DNA barcode sequencing were used. Sampling of 313 individuals collected from three of four B. lecontii clades and 20 sites across seven states uncovered at least 183 genera in 40 orders from four fungal phyla. At least seven putative new species were recovered in this study, despite the use of more classical culture-based approaches. Three of these fungi were phylogenetically resolved using ITS + LSU and include two new …

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond Jan 2017

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My dissertation explores strategies for survival primarily related to acts of storytelling, and more specifically storytelling with the tacit agreement for measures of truth, what I refer to in my title as life-writing. The term "life-writing" refers broadly to literary and theatrical works that are connected to the lived-experience. The texts I examine, all written in the U.S. after 1990, consider the impact of traumatic and unjust pasts through sweeping, epic narratives. Each of these texts tells a separate story about injustice through stories that reveal children as victims of discursive and/or actual violence arising out of conflict between and …

Identification Of Snps Potentially Associated With Asthma Using A Di-Isocyanate Luciferase Reporter Assay, Wentao Jiang Jan 2017

Identification Of Snps Potentially Associated With Asthma Using A Di-Isocyanate Luciferase Reporter Assay, Wentao Jiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Occupational Asthma (OA) is a common lung disorder that can be caused or aggravated by exposures and conditions in the work places. Di-isocyanate asthma (DA) is one type of OA. Despite years of research, there are no reliable markers to predict risk or susceptibility for DA. Previous studies have identified 23 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are potentially associated with genes that are related with DA. In this study, we tested the functional relevance of the 23 candidate SNPs (mostly intronic) in several DA-related genes. We hypothesized that some of these SNPs may affect the binding of relevant transcription …

Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia Jan 2017

Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous engineering problems are concerned with the challenge of representing real life systems through mathematical equations: modeling. Properly generated mathematical models can accurately predict the behavior of natural processes. The key objective of model development is to correctly build a set of equations or expressions that can reproduce the results observed from experimental measurements. By following this methodology, sources of error and uncertainty will arise as most natural processes have random factors that make the results stochastic, and therefore can never be exactly reproduced. A model can try to best approximate the actual outcome, but many times assumptions or simplifications …

Inhibiting The Cannabinoid Catabolic Enzyme Magl To Potentiate The Anti-Arthritic Properties Of The Synthetic Glucocorticoid Dexamethasone, Sara R. Nass

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA, Table 1) is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis, and is characterized by swelling, inflammation, pain, and destruction of the synovial joints (i.e., knees, elbows, wrists, hips, and fingers). Glucocorticoid receptor agonists are a type of steroid hormone and are among the most common treatments for inflammatory arthritis because of their powerful anti-inflammatory effects. However, harmful side effects are associated with these glucocorticoids (GCs), including increasing patients' vulnerability to infections. Cannabinoids (i.e., cannabis-like signaling molecules) exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with limited side effects compared to traditional immunosuppressants making them excellent targets for the development of …

Cannabinoid Withdrawal Produces Altered Somatic And Emotionality-Related Behavior In Mice, Kristen R. Trexler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cannabis sativa is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States. An estimated 9 percent of those who use cannabis will develop some level of cannabinoid use disorder (CUD). Although behavioral therapy has some success in treating CUD, many users still relapse. Moreover, there are no FDA approved pharmacological treatments available to complement behavioral therapy. The need for appropriate treatments highlights the need for nonhuman animal models to test target compounds. The current study aimed to (1) evaluate the MAGL inhibitor JZL184 as a possible treatment for cannabinoid withdrawal, and (2) to develop a spontaneous model of cannabinoid …

The Salza River is located in the Alpine Nature and Geopark Styrian Eisenwurzen and is used heavily for whitewater recreation. One of the main goals of protected area management is to provide opportunities for outdoor recreation to maintain or enhance the quality of visitor experience. This study explored whitewater recreationists’ crowding perceptions and preferences for river trip scenarios on the Salza River, Austria, using a discrete choice experiment. Six attributes described social, resource and managerial river conditions. More than 70% of the paddlers reported crowding. Results of the discrete choice experiment suggest that use levels are by far the most …

Rethinking The Influence Of Hydroelectric Development On Gene Flow In A Long-Lived Fish, The Lake Sturgeon Acipenser Fulvescens, Craig A. Mcdougall, Amy B. Welsh, Thierry Gosselin, W Gary Anderson, Patrick A. Nelson Jan 2017

Nelson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Many hydroelectric dams have been in place for 50 - >100 years, which for most fish species means that enough generations have passed for fragmentation induced divergence to have accumulated. However, for long-lived species such as Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, it should be possible to discriminate between historical population structuring and contemporary gene flow and improve the broader understanding of anthropogenic influence. On the Winnipeg River, Manitoba, two hypotheses were tested: 1) Measureable quantities of former reservoir dwelling Lake Sturgeon now reside downstream of the Slave Falls Generating Station, and 2) genetically differentiated populations of Lake Sturgeon occur upstream and …

Wetland Seed Dispersal By White-Tailed Deer In A Large Freshwater Wetland Complex, Kelley L. Flaherty, James S. Rentch, James T. Anderson Jan 2017

Wetland Seed Dispersal By White-Tailed Deer In A Large Freshwater Wetland Complex, Kelley L. Flaherty, James S. Rentch, James T. Anderson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Mechanisms of long-distance dispersal are important in establishing and maintaining plant populations in isolated wetland habitats. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been cited as long-distance dispersers of both native and exotic plant species in North America; however, knowledge regarding their influence in wetlands is limited. Given traditional classification methods for seed dispersal, white-tailed deer are not likely viewed as important dispersal mechanism for wetland plants. We collected naturally deposited white-tailed deer faecal pellet piles from wetlands in Canaan Valley, West Virginia, USA. Pellet piles were cold-stratified and germinated seedlings over a layer of sterile potting mix. The percentage of germinated …

Factors Affecting Availability For Detection: An Example Using Radio-Collared Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus), Christopher M. Lituma, David A. Buehler, Evan P. Tanner, Ashley M. Tanner, Patrick D. Keyser, Craig A. Harper Jan 2017

Factors Affecting Availability For Detection: An Example Using Radio-Collared Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus), Christopher M. Lituma, David A. Buehler, Evan P. Tanner, Ashley M. Tanner, Patrick D. Keyser, Craig A. Harper

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Avian monitoring strategies are usually linked to bird singing or calling behavior. Individual availability for detection can change as a result of conspecific factors affecting bird behavior, though the magnitude of these effects is difficult to quantify. We evaluated behavioral and temporal factors affecting Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) breeding season individual availability for detection during three common survey times (3 min, 5 min, 10 min). We conducted 10-minute surveys associated with radio-collared male Northern Bobwhites on Peabody Wildlife Management Area, Kentucky, from 2010–2011. We homed to within 50 m of radio-collared males and recorded number of distinct Northern …

Using A Multi-Omic Approach To Investigate A Diet Intervention In Young Adults At Risk Of Disease, Oluremi Ariel Famodu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background: Poor dietary behaviors are widely recognized in the role of development and course of a variety of illnesses, including but not limited to cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. Young adults have increased risk due to poor dietary behaviors, especially as they transition into a college setting. The evidence demonstrates an urgency for developing treatment and prevention through dietary intervention approaches in this population. In addition to improper diet, investigators have connected abnormal gut microbiome (i.e. the collection of genes from our intestinal microbiota) to inflammation and obesity, therefore momentum has gained in treating the altered gut microbiome with dietary …

Characterization Of Insulin Sensitivity And The Plasma Lipidome In Periparturient Dairy Cows, Sina Saed Samii Jan 2017

Characterization Of Insulin Sensitivity And The Plasma Lipidome In Periparturient Dairy Cows, Sina Saed Samii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the transition from gestation to lactation, dairy cows experience negative energy balance due to an increased demand for energy to support milk production coupled with inadequate energy intake. Energy deficit during the peripartum is associated with the development of insulin resistance which contributes to adipose tissue lipolysis. In turn, elevated free fatty acids (FFA) in circulation increase triacylglycerol (TAG) deposition in liver. This metabolic impairment is known to cause postpartum metabolic diseases including fatty liver and ketosis. Consequently, postpartum metabolic disease can lead to reduced milk production in early lactation, impaired reproductive performance, and increased culling rates. Moreover, cows …

The American Hunting Story And The Formation Of Environmental Literature., Jericho Williams Jan 2017

The American Hunting Story And The Formation Of Environmental Literature., Jericho Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation addresses the almost complete absence of American hunting stories in the subfield of environmental literature within American literature. Since environmental literature’s inception in the early 1990s with The Norton Book of Nature Writing (1990) and American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau (2008), environmental literary scholars have failed to take into account the roles of hunters in advancing conservationist measures to protect and preserve wildlife and lands throughout America from the early nineteenth century through the present day. This project seeks to build a bridge between environmental literary scholars and environmentalists far removed from hunting traditions and those whose …
