How Many Dogs Are In A Particular Place Or Region?, Andrew N. Rowan
WellBeing News
Over the years, it has always been something of a surprise that so little attention has been given to a better understanding of dog (and cat) demographics in human society. There is a large variation in the results from different surveys with the reported percentage of US households with pets ranging from 49% to 68%.

Biomedical Research and Alternative Methods Collection
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Russell and Burch’s pioneering book, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. Their 3Rs framework has helped to inspire humane and scientific progress in experimental technique. However, it is time to update its strategic application. The 21st century has already seen the development of promising, high-tech non-animal models, such as organs-on-a-chip and computational approaches that, in our view, will replace animals as the default option in biomedical experimentation. How fast this transition will take place will depend on the pace at which these new models are optimized to reflect the biology of humans, rather …

Biomedicine and Animal Models in Research Collection
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a poorly understood neurodevelopmental disorder of multifactorial origin. Animal-based research has been used to investigate ADHD etiology, pathogenesis and treatment, but the efficacy of this research for patients has not yet been systematically evaluated. Such evaluation is important given the resource consumption and ethical concerns incurred by animal use.
We used the citation tracking facility within Web of Science to locate citations of original research papers on animal models related to ADHD published prior to 2010 identified in PubMed by relevant search terms. Human medical papers citing those animal studies were carefully analyzed by …

Goats Distinguish Between Positive And Negative Emotion-Linked Vocalisations, Luigi Baciadonna, Elodie Briefer, Livio Favaro, A. G. Mcelligott
Bioacoustics Collection
Background: Evidence from humans suggests that the expression of emotions can regulate social interactions and promote coordination within a group. Despite its evolutionary importance, social communication of emotions in non-human animals is still not well understood. Here, we combine behavioural and physiological measures, to determine if animals can distinguish between vocalisations linked to different emotional valences (positive and negative). Using a playback paradigm, goats were habituated to listen to a conspecific call associated with positive or negative valence (habituation phase) and were subsequently exposed to a variant of the same call type (contact call) associated with the opposite valence (dishabituation …

Fish are used in a variety of experimental contexts often in high numbers. To maintain their welfare and ensure valid results during invasive procedures it is vital that we can detect subtle changes in behaviour that may allow us to intervene to provide pain-relief. Therefore, an automated method, the Fish Behaviour Index (FBI), was devised and used for testing the impact of laboratory procedures and efficacy of analgesic drugs in the model species, the zebrafish. Cameras with tracking software were used to visually track and quantify female zebrafish behaviour in real time after a number of laboratory procedures including fin …

Automated Bioacoustics: Methods In Ecology And Conservation And Their Potential For Animal Welfare Monitoring, Michael P. Mcloughlin, Rebecca Stewart, Alan G. Mcelligott
Conservation Biology and Animal Welfare Collection
Vocalizations carry emotional, physiological and individual information. This suggests that they may serve as potentially useful indicators for inferring animal welfare. At the same time, automated methods for analysing and classifying sound have developed rapidly, particularly in the fields of ecology, conservation and sound scene classification. These methods are already used to automatically classify animal vocalizations, for example, in identifying animal species and estimating numbers of individuals. Despite this potential, they have not yet found widespread application in animal welfare monitoring. In this review, we first discuss current trends in sound analysis for ecology, conservation and sound classification. Following this, …

Becoming The Good Shepherds, Eze Paez
Animal Sentience
It is very important that we clarify what we owe to nonhuman animals. To that end, we need a better understanding of animal cognition and emotion. Marino & Merskin’s target article is a welcome contribution to this project. Sheep, like most other animals, are sentient beings with interests of their own. It is wrong to discriminate against them based on species-membership or cognitive sophistication. We are morally required not to harm them, and to help them have the best possible lives, just as we would be in the case of human beings with similar interests. We must become the good …

Using Qualitative Behaviour Assessment To Investigate Human-Animal Relationships In Zoo-Housed Giraffes (Giraffa Camelopardalis), Freisha Patel, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Samantha J. Ward
Human-Animal Relationships Collection
Human-Animal Relationships (HAR) in zoos develop from repeated interactions between animals and their caretakers. HAR have been shown to affect health and welfare in farm animals, but limited zoo-based studies exist. This study investigates the association between the qualitative behaviour assessment (QBA) of emotional expression in giraffes and keeper action score in four types of keeper-animal interaction (KAI). Three giraffes generating 38 clips. QBA, using a free-choice profiling methodology, was applied instructing 18 observers to assess giraffe expressions shown in these clips. QBA scores were analysed using Generalized Procrustes Analysis. Keeper actions during each KAI event were rated by an …

A Quiet Revolution Replacing The Use Of Animals In Research, Andrew N. Rowan

In May, 2019, the Sanger Institute, a major producer of genetically modified mice announced it was closing down its GMO mouse unit. They came to this decision “following a rigorous review” of its scientific strategy and after consulting with the Wellcome Trust, one of the major funders of biomedical research in the world today and a supporter of programs at the Sanger Institute. This decision presages a new phase in animal research when animal use will again begin to decline as other technologies take the place of animal studies in major laboratories.

WellBeing News
The Mayhew, a London-based animal charity, started its Kabul dog management project in 2015 by conducting a survey of the dog population over February and March of 2015. It was estimated that there were 9,625 observable street dogs in these surveyed districts which translated to a total of around 27,000 street dogs in the city. The survey was followed by an intensive rabies vaccination program.

Human-Dog Interactions & Municipal Policy, Andrew N. Rowan

In 2009, a nationwide survey in Bosnia asking people about the threats in their local communities found that some communities were concerned about roaming dogs (rather than mine fields, crime or some other social ill). More specifically, the complaints mentioned dog attacks on people and domestic livestock. A Humane Community Development project in seven municipalities in Bosnia in 2013 proved very successful. The project has been very successful with reports of not only a significant reduction in roaming dogs and related problems but also greater citizen engagement with one another leading to improved civic cooperation both within and between the …

Animal experimentation has been one of the most controversial areas of animal use, mainly due to the intentional harms inflicted upon animals for the sake of hoped-for benefits in humans. Despite this rationale for continued animal experimentation, shortcomings of this practice have become increasingly more apparent and well-documented. However, these limitations are not yet widely known or appreciated, and there is a danger that they may simply be ignored. The 51 experts who have contributed to Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change critically review current animal use in science, present new and innovative non-animal approaches to address urgent scientific …

"The Last Elephants" By Don Pinnock & Colin Bell, Andrew Rowan
"The Last Elephants" By Don Pinnock & Colin Bell, Andrew Rowan
Tales of WellBeing
In his review of The Last Elephants (2019) by Don Pinnock & Colin Bell, Andrew Rowan highlights the book’s urgent warning about Africa’s rapidly declining elephant populations, drawing on data from the 2016 Great Elephant Census that revealed only 380,000 savannah elephants remaining, with poaching killing one every 15–20 minutes. Against a backdrop of soaring human population growth, the book blends striking photography with powerful personal accounts to document both the crisis and the courageous efforts to save elephants. While projecting a potential drop to just 105,000 elephants by 2050, it also offers hope through success stories in conservation, shared …

Despite abundant focus on responsible care of laboratory animals, we argue that inattention to the maltreatment of wildlife constitutes an ethical blind spot in contemporary animal research. We begin by reviewing significant shortcomings in legal and institutional oversight, arguing for the relatively rapid and transformational potential of editorial oversight at journals in preventing harm to vertebrates studied in the field and outside the direct supervision of institutions. Straightforward changes to animal care policies in journals, which our analysis of 206 journals suggests are either absent (34%), weak, incoherent, or neglected by researchers, could provide a practical, effective, and rapidly imposed …
Urban Wildlife, John Hadidian
Urban Wildlife, John Hadidian
WellBeing News
Cities are emerging as important “novel ecosystems” to which many species of urban wildlife are adapting and within which others already are thriving and finding sanctuary. Cities can be havens for rare and endangered species of animals and serve as focal areas for the emergence of new forms as adaptation to the requirements of urban life drives species evolution.

Wildlife Declines And Mammalian Biomass, Andrew N. Rowan
WellBeing News
Only 4% of the global biomass of terrestrial mammals currently is wild. The remaining biomass is either human (36%) or domestic mammals ((60%). Given the large declines in wildlife numbers in the past fifty years, it is imperative that the world rethinks its approach to "sustainable" (?) use of wildlife.
