All Violence Is Wrong, Henry Spira
All Violence Is Wrong, Henry Spira
Commentaries and Editorials
The question raised by Voices Across the USA Sept 13 – “Do animal-rights activists go too far in trying to protect animals?" – suggested a mythical linkage between animal rights and violence toward humans.

Vocal Perception: Brain Event-Related Potentials In A Chimpanzee, Gary G. Berntson, Sarah T. Boysen, Michael W. Torello
Sentience Collection
We describe the first brain event-related potential (ERP) study of cognitive processes in the chimpanzee. In an extension of our studies on the ontogeny of vocal perception, ERP measures were obtained during the presentation of simple nonsignal stimuli as well as conspecific and human vocalizations. We initially confirmed findings from humans and monkeys of the appearance of a long-latency positivity in the ERP waveform to a rare stimulus in an oddball paradigm. This ERP component is reminiscent of the P3a reported in humans under similar (passive) experimental conditions. We further demonstrated that both conspecific and human vocal stimuli having affective …

Comments Of Henry Spira On The Fsis Proposed Strategic Plan, Henry Spira
Farm Animal Campaign
Contrary to the billing, we find the Proposed FSIS Strategic Plan neither evolutionary nor revolutionary. As in the past, the focus is almost entirely on maintaining the status quo, on dealing with effects while ignoring causes.

Your Dinner Led A Horrible Life, Henry Spira
Commentaries and Editorials
In sharing "some thoughts on pigs" ("Animal Farms," Review & Outlook, June 14), your readers can hardly be expected to understand the outright horror inflicted on animals in factory farms when you present the issue in terms that never get more vivid than "size and scale" ... "integration of processes" ... boosting choices to consumers." Perhaps your writer has never had an opportunity to see this perversion of nature firsthand.

When a major corporation such as Sara Lee takes into account the well-being of farm animals, it helps set a positive pattern for the entire industry. We believe your initiative will thus have ripple effects beyond Long Prairie.

Farm Animal Campaign
A few months ago we wrote to the President of your subsidiary company, Sinai Kosher Sausage Corp., to draw their attention to the practices of one of their meat suppliers, -Long Prairie Packing company of Long Prairie, MN. We have received no acknowledgment from Sinai and thus we are writing directly to you. As detailed in our December 31, 1992 Fedex letter to Sinai, .Long Prairie Packing Co. continues the painful practise of shackling and hoisting conscious cattle while progressive plants continue to change over to more humane systems.
