Sustainability, Thoroughbred Racing And The Need For Change, Iris M. Bergmann Phd
Horse racing and competitions
Globally, the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry is reporting a declining trend. A report commissioned by the Jockey Club in the US, known as the McKinsey report, explicitly linked the public’s concern with animal welfare and the use of drugs to declining betting and attendance in the US. In various racing nations in Europe, in Australia and the US, thoroughbred racing is experiencing pressures from external sources and from within, with even industry participants calling for change. The industry is concerned with the integrity of racing. Structural changes, regulation and transparency in reporting are all issues identified in need of …

Survey On The Situation Of And Support For Pets Affected By The East Japan Great Earthquake In Iwate And Fukushima Prefectures, Japan, Sakiko Yamazaki
Disasters and Disaster Response
The unprecedented East Japan Great Earthquake impacted many humans as well as animals. To date, only national surveys that do not necessarily focus on the heavily impacted areas have been administered, and there is a lack of data on the situation of pets and their owners in heavily impacted areas. This survey administered on impacted pet owners in Iwate (N = 140) and Fukushima (N = 149) Prefectures in north-eastern Japan, areas both heavily affected by the disaster, explored the types of preparation for pets engaged in by pet owners, the situation on evacuation with pets, the use of and …
Unowned Cat Management In The State Of Ohio: Elements Of Best Practice In Public-Private Collaborative Efforts, Daniel Spehar
Unowned Cat Management In The State Of Ohio: Elements Of Best Practice In Public-Private Collaborative Efforts, Daniel Spehar
Management - TNR
A contentious debate over the management of free-roaming cat populations is ongoing. Nevertheless, disparate groups of stakeholders share a common goal of fewer community cats. Unowned cat management typically necessitates a choice between utilization of lethal or non-lethal measures. Research has indicated strong public support for employment of non-lethal methods, like trap-neuter-return (TNR). Collaborative TNR programs are experiencing success in a growing number of communities. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify new or underutilized public-private collaborative practices, and associated elemental factors, that have the potential to be used as—or incorporated into—templates of best practice for the non-lethal …
Threat Abatement Plan For Predation By Feral Cats, Commonwealth Of Australia, 2015
Threat Abatement Plan For Predation By Feral Cats, Commonwealth Of Australia, 2015
Predation and Wildlife
This Threat abatement plan for predation by feral cats establishes a national framework to guide and coordinate Australia’s response to the impacts of feral cats (Felis catus) on biodiversity. It identifies the research, management and other actions needed to ensure the long-term survival of native species and ecological communities affected by predation by feral cats. It replaces the previous threat abatement plan for predation by feral cats published in 2008 (DEWHA, 2008a). A review of the previous threat abatement plan found some significant advances in feral cat research and control since 2008 (Department of the Environment, 2015a).

Background Document For The Threat Abatement Plan For Predation By Feral Cats, Commonwealth Of Australia, 2015
Predation and Wildlife
This is the background document to the Threat abatement plan for predation by feral cats (Department of the Environment 2015). Predation by feral cats was identified as a key threatening process in 1999 with the passage of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This document provides information to underpin the threat abatement plan and includes information on feral cat characteristics, biology and distribution; impacts on environmental, social and cultural values; and current management practices and measures. The threat abatement plan (TAP) establishes a national framework to guide and coordinate Australia’s response to the effects of predation …

Scent Of The Familiar: An Fmri Study Of Canine Brain Responses To Familiar And Unfamiliar Human And Dog Odors, Gregory S. Berns, Andrew M. Brooks, Mark Spivak
Social Cognition Collection
Understanding dogs’ perceptual experience of both conspecifics and humans is important to understand how dogs evolved and the nature of their relationships with humans and other dogs. Olfaction is believed to be dogs’ most powerful and perhaps important sense and an obvious place to begin for the study of social cognition of conspecifics and humans. We used fMRI in a cohort of dogs (N = 12) that had been trained to remain motionless while unsedated and unrestrained in the MRI. By presenting scents from humans and conspecifics, we aimed to identify the dimensions of dogs’ responses to salient biological …

A General Framework For Animal Density Estimation From Acoustic Detections Across A Fixed Microphone Array, Ben C. Stevenson, David L. Borchers, Res Altwegg, René Swift, Douglas M. Gillespie, G. John Measey
Bioacoustics Collection
- Acoustic monitoring can be an efficient, cheap, non‐invasive alternative to physical trapping of individuals. Spatially explicit capture–recapture (SECR) methods have been proposed to estimate calling animal abundance and density from data collected by a fixed array of microphones. However, these methods make some assumptions that are unlikely to hold in many situations, and the consequences of violating these are yet to be investigated.
- We generalize existing acoustic SECR methodology, enabling these methods to be used in a much wider variety of situations. We incorporate time‐of‐arrival (TOA) data collected by the microphone array, increasing the precision of calling animal density estimates. …

A Balanced Perspective On Animal Welfare For Improved Meat And Meat Products, A. Y. Chulayo, V. Muchenje
Farm Animal Welfare Collection
Increased public concern for animal welfare in the logistics chain has led to a rise in the scrutiny of the treatment of food animals. Factors affecting the status of welfare of slaughter animals begin at the farm and occur during transportation and at the abattoir. The activities that animals pass through before slaughter are thought to have negative effects on both the animal and the product. Before or during this period, animals suffer pain, which compromises their physical, health and biochemical status, and meat quality and quantity; which leads to economic losses. Environmental impact plays a role in the behaviour, …
