Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (Ovemp) Using Air Conducted Sound: Effect Of Body Position On Threshold, Andrea Rae O'Neil Jan 2010

Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (Ovemp) Using Air Conducted Sound: Effect Of Body Position On Threshold, Andrea Rae O'Neil

Independent Studies and Capstones

The primary objective of this research study is to determine if various body positions for ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) testing demonstrate differentiation of the saccule and utricle through threshold responses.

Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser Jan 2010

Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser

Independent Studies and Capstones

Speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were acquired in quiet and in the presence of noise at two study sessions to investigate 1) test-retest variability and 2) subcortical representation of speech stimuli. Participants were adults with normal hearing in both ears who listened monaurally and adults with unilateral deafness. Results indicate consistency in responses across sessions and several differences between hearing groups for magnitudes of discrete components.

Dialogue Journals: A Non-Threatening Way To Correct Written Language Errors, Sara Brooke Morrell Jan 2010

Dialogue Journals: A Non-Threatening Way To Correct Written Language Errors, Sara Brooke Morrell

Independent Studies and Capstones

The goals of the present study are: to determine if dialogue journals are an effective activity within a balanced literacy program to improve on written language errors in students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Student Musicians' Perception Of Loudness And How It Correlates To The Measured Level, Amanda Moore Jan 2010

Student Musicians' Perception Of Loudness And How It Correlates To The Measured Level, Amanda Moore

Independent Studies and Capstones

The purpose of this project was to evaluate student musicians’ perception of loudness and see how it relates to the measured sound level when playing an instrument alone and when playing in an orchestra. Perhaps by examining this relationship, strategies can be developed to educate musicians on the risk of excessive noise exposure and hearing protection options.

Temporal Processing In Listeners With Unilateral Hearing Loss, Deborah K. Miller Jan 2010

Temporal Processing In Listeners With Unilateral Hearing Loss, Deborah K. Miller

Independent Studies and Capstones

Temporal processing is examined for sounds delivered to the intact ear of individuals with unilateral hearing, and delivered to one ear of individuals with normal, bilateral hearing. Two temporal processing skills are assessed: 1) the ability to detect sinusoidal amplitude modulation of a wide-band noise, for various modulation frequencies, and 2) the just-noticeable-difference for temporal complexity of random-spectrogram-sounds.

Culturally Appropriate Activities For Spanish Speaking Families And Educators Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Caroline C. Manning Jan 2010

Culturally Appropriate Activities For Spanish Speaking Families And Educators Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Caroline C. Manning

Independent Studies and Capstones

A look at teaching language to a child who is deaf or hard of hearing from a Spanish speaking home. A guide, including songs, activities and wordlists for families and teachers of the deaf.

The Effect Of Talker Age And Gender On Speech Perception Of Pediatric Cochlear Implant Users, Jillian B. Levine Jan 2010

The Effect Of Talker Age And Gender On Speech Perception Of Pediatric Cochlear Implant Users, Jillian B. Levine

Independent Studies and Capstones

Most clinically-employed speech materials for testing hearing impaired individuals are recordings made by adult male talkers. The author examined the possible effect of talker age and gender on the speech perception of children through the use of 1) two speech perception tests, each with four talker types (adult males, adult females, 10-12 year olds, 5-7 year olds), and 2) two groups of pediatric listeners: normal-hearing (NH) and cochlear implant users (CI).

Reading Fluency In Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lisa Emerson Jan 2010

Reading Fluency In Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lisa Emerson

Independent Studies and Capstones

This literature review explores the role of reading fluency in children who are deaf or hard of hearing and the essential role reading fluency plays in reading comprehension. The information gathered in this paper supports the importance of direct instruction of reading fluency with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Strial Capillary Permeability Following Noise Exposure In Mice, Noel Y. Dwyer Jan 2010

Strial Capillary Permeability Following Noise Exposure In Mice, Noel Y. Dwyer

Independent Studies and Capstones

A study of strial capillary permeability using fluorescent microspheres and immunohistochemistry in mice that do or do not exhibit a reduction in endocochlear potential following a single, intense noise exposure.

The Effect Of Nonlinear Frequency Compression And Linear Frequency Transposition On Speech Perception In School-Aged Children, Kelly L. Helm Jan 2010

The Effect Of Nonlinear Frequency Compression And Linear Frequency Transposition On Speech Perception In School-Aged Children, Kelly L. Helm

Independent Studies and Capstones

The primary objective of this study is to determine whether nonlinear frequency compression and linear transposition algorithms provide speech perception benefit in school-aged children.

Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill Jan 2010

Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill

Independent Studies and Capstones

This study evaluates the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) as a tool to describe hearing loss and predict when hearing aids would be appropriate for pediatric oncology patients who have received or are currently receiving cisplatin. The efficacy of the SII is compared to the Brock grade which is commonly used for patients with ototoxic hearing loss secondary to cisplatin treatment. The SII is a discrete measure that precisely reflects the patient’s functional hearing status and is highly correlated with the need for audiologic intervention.

Implications For Early Interventionists: Cross-Cultural And Low-Income Family Differences, Karen Elizabeth Kruse Jan 2010

Implications For Early Interventionists: Cross-Cultural And Low-Income Family Differences, Karen Elizabeth Kruse

Independent Studies and Capstones

This study examined the existing literature on current early intervention processes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing who are from low-income or minority families. The review of literature includes a framework of understanding the dynamics of low-income households and cultural differences among African Americans, Latin Americans, and American Indians.
