Humoral immunity to viruses and encapsulated bacteria is comprised of T cell-independent type 2 (TI-2) antibody responses that are characterized by rapid antibody production by marginal zone and B1 B cells. We demonstrate that toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands influence the TI-2 antibody response not only by enhancing the overall magnitude but also by skewing this response to one that is dominated by IgG isotypes. Importantly, TLR ligands facilitate this response by inducing type I interferon (IFN), which in turn elicits rapid and significant amounts of antigen-specific IgG2c predominantly from FO (follicular) B cells. Furthermore, we show that although the IgG2c …
Reading Fluency In Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lisa Emerson
Reading Fluency In Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lisa Emerson
Independent Studies and Capstones
This literature review explores the role of reading fluency in children who are deaf or hard of hearing and the essential role reading fluency plays in reading comprehension. The information gathered in this paper supports the importance of direct instruction of reading fluency with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Strial Capillary Permeability Following Noise Exposure In Mice, Noel Y. Dwyer
Strial Capillary Permeability Following Noise Exposure In Mice, Noel Y. Dwyer
Independent Studies and Capstones
A study of strial capillary permeability using fluorescent microspheres and immunohistochemistry in mice that do or do not exhibit a reduction in endocochlear potential following a single, intense noise exposure.
The Effect Of Nonlinear Frequency Compression And Linear Frequency Transposition On Speech Perception In School-Aged Children, Kelly L. Helm
The Effect Of Nonlinear Frequency Compression And Linear Frequency Transposition On Speech Perception In School-Aged Children, Kelly L. Helm
Independent Studies and Capstones
The primary objective of this study is to determine whether nonlinear frequency compression and linear transposition algorithms provide speech perception benefit in school-aged children.
Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill
Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill
Independent Studies and Capstones
This study evaluates the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) as a tool to describe hearing loss and predict when hearing aids would be appropriate for pediatric oncology patients who have received or are currently receiving cisplatin. The efficacy of the SII is compared to the Brock grade which is commonly used for patients with ototoxic hearing loss secondary to cisplatin treatment. The SII is a discrete measure that precisely reflects the patient’s functional hearing status and is highly correlated with the need for audiologic intervention.
Implications For Early Interventionists: Cross-Cultural And Low-Income Family Differences, Karen Elizabeth Kruse
Implications For Early Interventionists: Cross-Cultural And Low-Income Family Differences, Karen Elizabeth Kruse
Independent Studies and Capstones
This study examined the existing literature on current early intervention processes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing who are from low-income or minority families. The review of literature includes a framework of understanding the dynamics of low-income households and cultural differences among African Americans, Latin Americans, and American Indians.

Outcomes Of Conventional Amplification For Pediatric Unilateral Hearing Loss, Lauren A. Wendorf
Outcomes Of Conventional Amplification For Pediatric Unilateral Hearing Loss, Lauren A. Wendorf
Independent Studies and Capstones
Although some children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are at-risk for educational difficulties and behavioral problems, research in treatment outcomes for pediatric UHL is limited. The objective of this study was to examine the benefits of a conventional hearing aid in children with mild to moderately severe UHL, using speech perception measures and subjective assessments from the child, parent, and teacher.
Anatomic Correlates Of Strial Presbycusis In Recombinant Inbred Mouse Strains, Christina M. Walkonis
Anatomic Correlates Of Strial Presbycusis In Recombinant Inbred Mouse Strains, Christina M. Walkonis
Independent Studies and Capstones
This project attempts to identify anatomic features that predict the range of the ‘normal’ endocochlear potential in young inbred mice. Cochlear lateral wall histologic metrics were compared in recombinant inbred (RI) mouse strains formed from BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice.
Verification Of Computed Tomographic Estimates Of Cochlear Implant Array Position: A Micro-Ct And Histological Analysis, Jessica Teymouri
Verification Of Computed Tomographic Estimates Of Cochlear Implant Array Position: A Micro-Ct And Histological Analysis, Jessica Teymouri
Independent Studies and Capstones
We examine the efficacy two volume spatial registration of pre and postoperative clinical computed tomography (CT) imaging to verify post-operative electrode array placement in cochlear implant (CI) patients. To measure the degree of accuracy with which the composite image predicts in-vivo placement of the array, we replicate the CI surgical process in cadaver heads. Pre-operative, post-operative, micro CT imaging and histology are utilized for verification.
Comparison Of Map Kinases In The Proliferation Of Chick Utricular Epithelial Cells, Meghan Kathleen Spriggs
Comparison Of Map Kinases In The Proliferation Of Chick Utricular Epithelial Cells, Meghan Kathleen Spriggs
Independent Studies and Capstones
Levels of activation of MAP kinase pathways and effects of inhibiting these pathways were examined in chick utricular epithelial cultures in order to determine the role of these pathways in proliferation.

Genetic And Temporal Aspects Of Protection By Kanamycin Against Cochlear Noise Injury, Allyson D. Rosen
Genetic And Temporal Aspects Of Protection By Kanamycin Against Cochlear Noise Injury, Allyson D. Rosen
Independent Studies and Capstones
Experiments explored the minimal kanamycin dosing regimen that renders protection against noise induced hearing loss in young CBA/J mice. We also tested the age-dependence of protection in CBA/J as well as the dependence of protection on a particular genetic background in experiments using young C57BL/6J and CBA/CaJ mice.
