Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, Secondary Trauma, And Experiences With Death And Dying Among Organ And Tissue Recovery Professionals: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Shelby Andreasen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Professionals in organ and tissue recovery have complex job roles that affect the outcomes of patients who wait for a life-saving organ or a life-enhancing tissue graft. This profession had little research regarding burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma, as well as how consistent involvement with deceased patients affects these professionals and the outcomes of their cases. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of 11 organ and tissue recovery professionals (OTRPs). Constructivist self-development theory was applied to understand OTRPs’ lived experiences of compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and burnout, as well as the impact …

Cisgender women with autism remain underrepresented in research on postsecondary education and career development despite experiencing distinct barriers within these systems. This qualitative study examined how cisgender women with autism perceived the impact of their postsecondary education experiences on career choices and employment navigation. Guided by the social model of disability and intersectionality theory, nine postsecondary participants formally diagnosed with autism and who self-identified as cisgender completed semistructured interviews exploring their educational and employment experiences. Thematic analysis identified seven interconnected themes. Findings indicated that academic success often masked significant internal distress, suggesting that performance did not reflect accessible environments. Participants …

A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart
A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Bullying in schools is often addressed through punitive deterrence practices, solution-focused counseling, or restorative conferencing. These approaches often fail to recognize or account for the power imbalance that ultimately sustains bullying. This article discusses a narrative-restorative intervention to address bullying as a relational and communal issue, rather than relying on isolation or deterrence practices. The limitations of the dominant models discussed highlight the role of power in shaping bullying dynamics and connect legal and ethical responsibilities of narrative-restorative practices. Situated within the framework of California education law and professional ethical standards, at its core, undercover anti-bullying teams aim to redistribute …

Experiences Of Resilience During Divorce For Black Women Who Attend Church, Tracey Ann Grant
Experiences Of Resilience During Divorce For Black Women Who Attend Church, Tracey Ann Grant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Across the globe, divorce is a challenging situation that affects family relationships and disrupts social networks. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to investigate how recently divorced Black women describe how their involvement in church may have supported their mental health and resilience …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic intensified existing staffing challenges in U.S. nursing homes. Although previous studies have examined the effects of COVID-19 in nursing homes, limited research has examined the association between staff COVID-19 infection counts, staffing shortages, and resident COVID-19 deaths in New York State nursing homes. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether staff COVID-19 infection counts were associated with staffing shortages and resident COVID-19 deaths in New York State nursing homes. The study was guided by the Donabedian structure-process-outcome model. Analyses of the four research questions examined whether staff COVID-19 infection counts were associated with …
Staff Education To Address Verbal De-Escalation Skills In Correctional Mental Healthcare, Mary L. Goodman
Staff Education To Address Verbal De-Escalation Skills In Correctional Mental Healthcare, Mary L. Goodman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff education project evaluated the effects of a structured verbal de-escalation training program on self-efficacy among staff in a federal correctional mental health unit. Staff at the site often reported uncertainty managing escalating behaviors, leading to frequent use of restrictive interventions like restraints and seclusion—practices that can compromise safety, quality of care, and raise ethical concerns. To address this gap, an evidence-based curriculum was implemented for 41 multidisciplinary staff, including nurses, certified nursing assistants, and correctional officers. The curriculum included a PowerPoint presentation, role play, and group discussion. A pre–post design measured changes in staff confidence using a modified …

The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the charter school human service professionals’ perceptions of the life skills counseling services needed for K-8 self-contained students in Essex County, NJ. Botvin Lifeskills Training program was used as the framework for the study. Using a qualitative research model, semistructured …
The Role Of Political And Media Narratives In Housing Affordability, Craig Anthony Bardo
The Role Of Political And Media Narratives In Housing Affordability, Craig Anthony Bardo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that persistent reliance on market-oriented affordability strategies continued despite evidence of declining housing affordability in Nashville. Understanding how policy narratives structured accepted solutions may help explain the persistence of existing policy approaches. Research has shown that housing affordability is a significant policy concern in many U.S. cities. Rising housing costs, displacement pressures, and persistent rent burdens have been indicated in studies as contributing factors. However, less attention has been paid to how political and media narratives shape the boundaries of recognized housing policy solutions within local discourse, specifically in Nashville, Tennessee. The purpose …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Couples: Narcissism, Marital Quality, And Spousal Distress, Lindella Lenise Mcdowell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Narcissism is a global phenomenon that is manifested across cultures. Despite research on narcissism and relationships, there is limited literature focusing on diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly African American couples, where one spouse has been diagnosed as exhibiting narcissistic tendencies or traits. The purpose of this study was to increase knowledge and awareness of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism’s impact on African American couples. A qualitative phenomenological research design was used. The hierarchical two-dimensional view …

Exploring The Psychosocial Barriers To Kidney Transplant For African Americans In Southern Florida Diagnosed With End-Stage Renal Disease, Erica Lindsey Mitchell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans experience disproportionately high rates of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) yet continue to experience disparities in access to kidney transplantation, the preferred treatment for ESRD. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore the psychosocial barriers to kidney transplantation for African Americans living with ESRD in south Florida. This capstone project was guided by the tenets of intersectionality theory. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with four human services professionals and analyzed using thematic analysis. The Lived Experience Of Running Among Individuals With Anxiety, Emily Rice
The Lived Experience Of Running Among Individuals With Anxiety, Emily Rice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Anxiety is among the most prevalent mental health concerns affecting adults, yet many individuals encounter barriers to traditional mindfulness-based interventions. Running is frequently described as promoting presence, mental clarity, emotional grounding, and relief from anxiety-related distress; however, little qualitative research has explored how adults with anxiety make meaning of their lived experiences of running. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) study was to explore how adults with anxiety describe and make meaning of their lived experiences of running. Guided by embodied cognition and informed by mindfulness and flow theories, this study explored participants' lived experiences of running. Participants …
