Exploring Infant Massage As Standard Nonpharmacological Treatment For Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, Christine Ann Perez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The opioid epidemic in the United States has increased opioid use in women of reproductive age, leading to in utero exposure causing withdrawal symptoms in newborns known as neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). State perinatal quality collaboratives (SPQCs) have been used in hospitals with quality initiatives (QIs) to improve standardization for NOWS; however, there remains a gap in knowledge in interventions to support the mother-infant dyad such as infant massage. This general qualitative research study explored the process and experiences of implementing infant massage as a standard practice for NOWS to inform national, state, and local policy. Participants in the …

Exploring Discretionary Practices Of Civilian Police Officers During Traffic Stop While Working In A Military Community, Lisa Michelle Tartt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The individuals who reside in military communities must abide by the rules of both the military and the civilian communities. When an individual is stopped for a traffic violation in a military community, their driver’s license is requested but the military- affiliated personnel often present their military identification card also. Some may expect leniency due to their military affiliation while others do not. However, there are no studies covering police discretion in a military community during traffic stops. Using social stratification theory, the purpose of this study was to understand officers’ perspectives on discretion during traffic stops and how their …

Data were collected using semi structured interviews of eight low-income Black single mothers …
Relationship Of Mindfulness To Worldview Defense When Mortality Is Salient, Blake Ausmus
Relationship Of Mindfulness To Worldview Defense When Mortality Is Salient, Blake Ausmus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Humans value self-preservation, and therefore that which is perceived to threaten survival should cause stress. However, humans have also developed the understanding of their own mortality, meaning that they cognitively understand that death is inevitable. The conflict arising from these opposing constructs holds the potential to cause anxiety. Interestingly, this anxiety is not easily observed in most. Terror management theory posits that there are buffer systems in place that help to keep death anxiety at bay so that humans are able to continue to function in their daily lives. These buffers include becoming more stringent to one’s worldviews and less …
