There was a significant gap in practice at an outpatient psychiatric mental health clinic regarding organized, evidence-based training on mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and emotional exhaustion among psychiatric mental health staff. This project’s practice-focused question was “Does educating psychiatric mental health staff on mindfulness strategies for burnout improve their knowledge, as evidenced by pre- and post-surveys?” This educational intervention was developed, implemented, and evaluated using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice paradigm and the ADDIE instructional design model. A literature search was conducted using CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE/PubMed, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library, with assistance from the librarians at Walden University. …

Engaging Clinical Teams Through Leadership, Workplace Culture, And Job Satisfaction, Garidanielle Matsey Feb 2026

Engaging Clinical Teams Through Leadership, Workplace Culture, And Job Satisfaction, Garidanielle Matsey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Current literature does not adequately address the factors that lead to and prevent burnout and poor work performance among inexperienced clinicians and clinical supervisors working in group private practice. Exploring supervision experiences, specifically leadership style, employee engagement, and internal communication, may provide insight into the experiences of novice mental health professionals and their supervisors in addressing burnout and enhancing work performance. Through a qualitative single-case study design informed by interpretative phenomenological principles, data were collected in semistructured interviews with five behavioral health leaders from a two-location group private practice who hold dual roles as clinicians and supervisors. The interview data …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice staff education project was to strengthen nurses’ knowledge and confidence in suicide risk assessments. Suicide remains a crucial patient safety issue, and nurses report uncertainty in early recognition and intervention; therefore, brief, practice-proximal training is essential. The practice-focused question that informed this project’s purpose was whether a short education module with pre- and post testing improves nurses’ knowledge and confidence in suicide risk assessment. Three nurses participated in a structured session covering risk factors, warning signs, standardized screening, and safety planning. I then used descriptive analysis to compare their pre- and posttest …

Early Atopic Dermatitis And Risk Of Later Autism Spectrum Disorders, Annissa Courtney Heslope-Mathieu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Early-onset atopic dermatitis (AD) affects approximately 10-20% of children in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests potential links between early immune dysregulation and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Limited research has examined whether early AD serves as a specific risk factor for later ASD diagnosis. Guided by life course theory, the purpose of this study was to examine whether AD diagnosed within the first two years of life predicts later diagnosis of ASD among U.S. children younger than five years. A secondary analysis of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study was conducted using a retrospective cohort design. The sample included 2,949 …

Black Educated Women's Experience With Relationship Formation After Intimate Partner Violence, Jeannette Aris Thompson-Beckford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at disproportionately high rates, yet most research has focused on those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, overlooking how educated Black women navigate relationships after IPV. While extensive studies have examined the health consequences of IPV among Black women, less attention has been given to their experiences with intimacy, trust, and partner selection post-IPV. Additionally, existing research on relationship formation after IPV has largely centered on other racial groups, leaving the unique challenges faced by Black educated women underexplored. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how Black, educated women describe their experiences …

Identifying Best Practices To Decrease The High Rate Of 30-Day Rehospitalization Of Patients With Dementia From Skilled Nursing Facilities, Mavis Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract As CMS continues to prioritize quality care over quantity and positive patient outcomes, hospitals and nursing homes must ensure that their mission and goals align. The high rehospitalization rate is a current and ongoing concern among policymakers and healthcare administrators. Adverse patient outcomes and increased financial costs to both patients and Health Service Organization (HSO) administrators highlight the need to identify best practices to help reduce rehospitalization. The purpose of this integrative review is to identify best practices for reducing the high rate of 30-day rehospitalization among patients with dementia in skilled nursing facilities (SNF). The review question that …

Social Workers' Perspectives Of Using Teletherapy To Foster Resilience Among Middle-Class Single Black Mothers, Yvonne Judge

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Inadequate mental health support, particularly from social workers, disproportionately affects middle-class single Black mothers. Prior studies have examined low-income single mothers’ access to mental health care and the potential of teletherapy as a tool for improving access; however, few have explored how middle-class single Black mothers navigate mental health challenges. Further, there is a lack of research on social workers’ perspectives of using teletherapy to foster resilience among middle-class single Black mothers. This is a critical gap, as social workers play a key role in tailoring mental health interventions. The purpose of this study was to explore social workers’ perspectives …

Exploring Workforce Retention In A Behavioral Health Organization: A Qualitative Study, Meagan Tamara Copelin Dec 2025

Exploring Workforce Retention In A Behavioral Health Organization: A Qualitative Study, Meagan Tamara Copelin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Workforce retention among mental health professionals has been a central focus of scholars as behavioral health systems continue to face chronic staffing instability (Hallett et al., 2024). Researchers have demonstrated that burnout, limited organizational support, and resource misalignment significantly influence turnover in these settings (Maslach & Leiter, 2016; Pulman & Fenge, 2024). However, researchers have not yet established how mental health professionals within a single publicly funded, state-operated behavioral health organization interpret the organizational and cultural factors that influence their decision to remain employed. The purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to explore how mental health professionals in a …
