The Academic And Social Meaning Of Transcendental Meditation Practice For Students And Their Guardians, Holly Erica Squires
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Transcendental meditation (TM) is a unique meditation practice that uses a personal mantra to help the practitioner create a quiet state of mind, greater mental clarity, better concentration, and emotional control. TM has not been examined for its value to help students academically and socially. In this generic qualitative study, high school students and their guardians were asked to describe the meaning of TM practice in their academic and social life. The competencies of social emotional learning (SEL) theory were utilized as the conceptual framework to guide the study’s methodology. Data from semistructured interviews with six students and five guardians …
Predictors Of Mental Health Seeking Behaviors Among Nigerian Immigrants, Francisca Iroh-Donawa
Predictors Of Mental Health Seeking Behaviors Among Nigerian Immigrants, Francisca Iroh-Donawa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding the mental health seeking attitudes (MHSA) of Nigerian immigrants is a social concern for psychologists as it provides valuable information for developing outreach and clinical interventions. Unfortunately, there is scant and inconclusive research addressing potential predictors of MHSA among Nigerian immigrants, thus leaving clinicians with an unclear picture in understanding and the promoting the wellbeing of this vulnerable population. To address this gap, this study utilized the theory of planned behavior and Berry’s model of acculturation to explore if acculturation (positively), length of stay in host country (positively), religious and spiritual beliefs (negatively), and gender (women higher than men) …
Staff Education Program On Medication Reconciliation, Chika Nweze-Muoghalu
Staff Education Program On Medication Reconciliation, Chika Nweze-Muoghalu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A minimum of one medication error occurs daily in the life of a hospitalized patient, which confirms the research that medication errors constitute the most significant patient safety issue and that about 20% of these errors result in patient harm. Many errors could have been averted if an accurate medication reconciliation process had been practiced. Medication reconciliation is a formal process whereby the patient’s current medication list is compared to the patient’s record or medication orders whenever the patient’s level of care changes. Framed within the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model of instructional design, the purpose of …

Challenges Faced By Women Released From Prison Leading To Criminal Recidivism, Bawana O Gayle
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women are more likely than men to leave prison and return to environments that are not stable, which increases the likelihood that they will engage in further criminal activities either because of being around others engaging in criminal activities or because of unstable living conditions and a lack of positive support from family and friends. This qualitative study used descriptive content analysis to analyze 30 peer-reviewed academic articles, with the purpose of understanding the challenges faced by African American and Caucasian women who were released from prison and understanding their difficulties in re-entering society. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project involved the development and implementation of a staff education program to enhance the use of the Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression (DASA) tool. The aim of the project was to address the inconsistent and inaccurate applications of the DASA tool by health staff, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention to address patient aggression and increased risk of violence to both staff and patients. The importance of addressing this issue within the context of nursing practice rests on the DASA tool’s importance as a means for nurses to assess patients with aggressive behavior, …

Jc Polyomavirus Pooled Seropositivity Prevalence In Healthy Subjects, Lenka J. Kimla
Jc Polyomavirus Pooled Seropositivity Prevalence In Healthy Subjects, Lenka J. Kimla
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
JC polyomavirus (JCV) causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in immunocompromised individuals and has been linked to cancer development. To-date, no information is available about the JCV seroprevalence in the healthy (nondiseased) population or whether this virus is ecologically connected to humans. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis was to the estimate the overall seroprevalence of JCV in the healthy human population by age, region, and testing method. A meta-analysis conducted on 24 studies revealed a pooled JCV seroprevalence of 60% (95% CI, 55% - 65%) with statistically significant effect size (z = 32.93, p < 0.001). Meta-regression and subgroup analyses with STATA18 showed that age and region had a strong positive predictive value on prevalence (R = .578, R2 = 0.334, F(2,52) = 12.543, p < 0.001) whereas the testing method had no significant effect on prevalence. The theories that grounded this study were the ecological model and the systems theory, which support the study result that JCV appears to be ubiquitous in the human population with JCV being acquired very early in life. The results of the systematic literature review indicated that JCV is transmitted via fecal-oral and respiratory routes within and outside of families. Most infants are infected with JCV by the age of 6 months and JCV seronegativity may not be indicative of a lack of an underlying JCV infection. JCV seropositivity increases with age, which is most probably by viral reactivation due to immune senescence. These findings have positive social change implications with JCV treatment, screening, and vaccine development.

Improving Financial Sustainability Through A 990n-Sized Charity’S Fundraising-Activity Audit, Eileen Callejas
Improving Financial Sustainability Through A 990n-Sized Charity’S Fundraising-Activity Audit, Eileen Callejas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Current scholarly literature has asserted that large non-profit organizations benefit from conducting fundraising-activity audit portfolio analyses. However, suitable techniques and tools that ultra-small nonprofits (990N-sized charities) can use to improve their fundraising-activity analyses have not been clearly established. The research problem was in modifying tools that work efficiently for hyper-localized charities to compare the effectiveness of their fundraising-activities. Preferred tools were needed to reinforce ideation and align improvements within the charities’ known constraints. The purpose of this study was to explore three suitably modified instruments that could be used for fundraising-activity auditing. Based on Ostrom’s institutional analysis and development framework, …

Emergence Of Childhood Adversities Impacting Coping Strategies Among African American Adults, Cherise Jenean Bailey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before age 18 that negatively impact mental, physical, and emotional well-being. The impact of ACEs and how they influence coping strategies of African American undergraduate college students between 18 and 22 is less known. This study involved employing a nonexperimental quantitative cross-sectional research design to identify coping strategies of African American undergraduate college students between 18 and 22. Additionally, the study involved identifying factors that predict coping strategies among this population. The transactional theory of stress and coping was the theoretical framework for the study. Online survey tools were used to collect …
