Role Of The Nurse During Disaster Preparedness: A Systematic Literature Review And Application To Public Health Nurses, Elizabeth Rivera-Rodriguez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
After the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, public health garnered more attention. This event forced public health nurses to acquire new roles needed to respond to disasters. The purpose of this project was to synthesize the current evidence related to the role of nurses during disaster preparedness and apply that evidence to public health nurses. The practice question focused on the role of nurses during disasters which were not a part of their normal daily activity. The Fineout-Overholt, Melnyk, Stillwell, and Williamson hierarchy for grading evidence was the theoretical framework used. A systematic literature review was conducted to …
The Use Of A Patient Mobility Sensor To Decrease Hospital-Acquired Pressure Ulcers, Monica Vassallo Shallow
The Use Of A Patient Mobility Sensor To Decrease Hospital-Acquired Pressure Ulcers, Monica Vassallo Shallow
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pressure ulcers are a serious health condition that have negative consequences for patients and organizations. The primary cause of pressure ulcers is intense and/or prolonged pressure or pressure in combination with shear that results in damage to the skin and underlying soft tissue. Early identification of patients at risk for pressure ulcers and 2-hour repositioning to off-load pressure are key components in reducing pressure ulcer development. Despite ongoing efforts to prevent pressure ulcers, the incidence and prevalence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs) at the practicum site exceeded the benchmark for Magnet hospitals and the health system's goal of 1%. Patient …
Working Alliance Between Interpretive And Noninterpretive Therapy Services For Deaf Individuals, Sherri Lee Spain
Working Alliance Between Interpretive And Noninterpretive Therapy Services For Deaf Individuals, Sherri Lee Spain
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Deaf individuals typically have access to 2 types of therapeutic services: interpretive (with an interpreter) and noninterpretive (with a sign-fluent therapist). Previous research indicates that the presence of an interpreter may hinder development of working alliance and attachment. There is a lack of empirical evidence assessing the effect of working alliance and attachment based on whether or not therapy incorporates an interpreter. The working alliance theory and the attachment theory were the theoretical foundations for this study. This study examined the difference between the strength of working alliance and attachment to the therapist given the presence or absence of an …
Collaborative Governance And Anticorruption In Postwar Monrovia, Tewroh-Wehtoe Sungbeh
Collaborative Governance And Anticorruption In Postwar Monrovia, Tewroh-Wehtoe Sungbeh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public sector corruption is a major problem in Monrovia. Successive national
governments have instituted anticorruption measures in the 1970s and 2000s, and anticorruption agencies were established to eradicate corruption. However, there appears to be a significant lack of resources and political willpower to prosecute corrupt government officials. A failure to curb political corruption indicates that current policies are not working. Government works when there is a perception that it delivers results and that the needs and safety of the citizenry are protected. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenology study was to gain a deeper understanding of public sector corruption at …

African American Male College Students' Experience Of College Preparation, Linda Denice Valentine-Cobb
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American male students have a high risk of not completing high school and not going to college. Students receive some college preparation as early as middle school, yet it is not enough to increase the number of African American male high school or college graduates. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe what 18-24-year-old African American male college students recalled from middle school and high school about college preparation, college planning, and college attendance. Critical race theory was used to reveal how outside factors such as oppression, racism, or socioeconomic status prevent African American male students from …

Predictors Of Uti Antibiotic Resistance For Female Medicaid Recipients In U.S. Ambulatory Care Settings, Wendy Denise Wiesehuegel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Urinary tract infections are diagnosed in female populations primarily in ambulatory care settings in the United States. Yet, published evidence documents that many of the antibiotics prescribed in these settings are unnecessary, erroneous, or, inappropriately prescribed. Improper management of uncomplicated urinary tract infections in nonpregnant women has resulted in higher morbidity rates due to antibiotic resistance. The purpose of this retrospective observational cohort study was to explore a current national database for associations between nonpregnant American female patients who were exposed to poverty and at risk for urinary tract infection antibiotic resistance in an ambulatory care setting. Krieger's ecosocial theory …
