Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Problematic Sexuality: A Comparative Analysis Using The Midsa Assessment, Brandon Andrew Lozano May 2025

Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Problematic Sexuality: A Comparative Analysis Using The Midsa Assessment, Brandon Andrew Lozano

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Problematic sexuality among college students is a complex and understudied issue, particularly regarding gender-based differences in affective instability and sexual compulsivity. While prior research has focused mainly on male populations, limited evidence exists about how these factors manifest among female students or whether gender moderates these relationships. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to examine whether gender moderates the relationship between factors affecting sexual compulsivity as measured by the Multidimensional Inventory of Development, Sex, and Aggression (MIDSA). The MIDSA, originally developed for male sexual offenders, has since been administered to both male and female populations. Findings from hierarchical …

This qualitative, phenomenological study is an examination of the fear of deadly encounters during traffic stops as experienced by seven African American men in Detroit. This fear is rooted in the historical context of slavery, where laws permitted the use of force to control African Americans. Using the critical race theory framework, the impact of traffic stops on African American men was explored, including how these encounters contribute to fear, psychological distress, and potential escalation of violence in interactions with law enforcement. The study shows that the fear of police encounters significantly impacts the psychological well-being, trust, and security of …

After reviewing the literature, Black women living in halfway housing needed more culturally accommodative and responsive access to mental health care. Despite recent efforts to improve the access and quality of mental health services for Black Americans, some of the most common barriers that continued to exist include and were not limited to the following: stigma associated with mental illness and distrust of the health care system. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand Black women’s perceptions of their mental and emotional rehabilitation while living in halfway housing. The hermeneutic phenomenology theory was most appropriate as it …

The Effectiveness Of Postincarceration Reentry Programming In Fostering Community Reintegration For Women, La Shawn B. Kelley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Identifying gaps in reentry programs for formerly incarcerated women is challenging due to the lack of evaluations that include the perspectives of the transitioning women on which components most effectively support their reintegration. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of transitioning women who received reentry services, in order to assess program effectiveness in community reintegration and inform future interventions. The research question for this study was, how do women served by Organization A’s reentry program describe the program’s effectiveness in preparing them for community reintegration after incarceration? An Independent Samples t-test was used to analyze whether there was a statistically significant difference between pre and post use of force incidents and search and seizure incidents by the BCPD and the CPD. Secondary data regarding the BCPD use of …

Perceptions Of Campus Safety And Campus Carry Among Student Veterans, Kerwin J. Flaherty

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Student veterans are an essential population for research but remain consistently underexamined in the literature. Similarly, veterans carrying firearms are an essential but under-examined topic in the literature. This study sought to address gaps in both domains by investigating student veterans’ perspectives on safety and firearms on campus, or “campus carry”. Campus carry refers to a set of policies that vary by jurisdiction but generally allow individuals to legally carry concealed firearms on all or some parts of a public university or college campus. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how student veterans in Texas perceive campus safety and how these …

A Qualitative Examination Of Probationary Police Candidate Success And Attrition, Joseph Eugene Roy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement has undergone significant changes, requiring modern officers to embody a complex blend of traditional values and adaptive capabilities. Despite rigorous selection and training processes, some police recruits leave the profession prematurely, often during their probationary or field training phases. This early attrition represents a costly challenge for law enforcement agencies, with training expenses sometimes exceeding $200,000 per recruit. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of police recruits who successfully completed field training and compared them to the observations of FTOs who trained recruits who left law enforcement early. The research used Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory and …

Policymakers’ Perceptions About Providing Affordable Housing In Rural Georgia, Robert Joseph Wiley Apr 2025

Policymakers’ Perceptions About Providing Affordable Housing In Rural Georgia, Robert Joseph Wiley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The literature showed that low-income households face a persistent deficit of affordable housing, forcing these families to live in dilapidated housing or to live beyond their means to pay for adequate housing, and that this problem transcends rural and urban counties. Further, researchers indicated that solving this problem provided a stable workforce and a better quality of life for all income groups. A gap in the literature showed the need for more research on nonmetropolitan communities addressing housing and neighborhood revitalization; therefore, through this qualitative multiple-case study local policymakers' perceptions of the affordable housing problem in rural Georgia were explored. …

The Impact Of On-The-Job Traumatic Events From The Perspective Of African American Law Enforcement Officers, Stefanie Marie Hadley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most law enforcement officers (LEOs) enter their profession with the intent to positively impact their communities. However, the emotional and psychological toll of their work often goes unaddressed, leaving officers to navigate repeated exposure to trauma with limited support or preparation. While research has examined the effects of trauma on LEOs, there remains a gap in understanding the impact on African American LEOs. This study explored the effects of frequent on-the-job traumatic events from the perspective of African American LEOs and the barriers to seeking mental health treatment. Guided by social cognitive theory and rational choice theory, this qualitative study …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A safety management system (SMS) is challenging for an aviation maintenance facility and even more significant for the aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) entrusted to perform the work due to organizational, methodological, and consistency issues. The incorporation of an SMS is new in the United States for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities that operate under the Code of Federal Regulations Part 145. AMTs constitute the bulk of the workers in an MRO. By default, a safety culture and safety consciousness existed in MROs prior to an SMS, and this study was conducted to understand the perceptions of the AMTs in …

Obstacles For Women In Policing Seeking Leadership Positions, Catina Dukes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women’s representation in policing has grown throughout time, yet women continue to be underrepresented in policing as well as higher-ranking leadership positions. Despite efforts to increase their representation, many women in policing have yet to receive the proper promotion that they are due over their male counterparts. Further, when women are promoted, they are usually assigned to deal with crimes such as sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking, and domestic violence against women. While prior research has addressed these gaps, there are a lack of data on the challenges women encounter while working toward leadership positions in the police workforce. …

New research on rural law enforcement stress levels reveals concerning implications for police reform and community safety, particularly in western Colorado where officers face unique challenges. This quantitative study examined age group differences in operational and organizational stress among rural law enforcement officers using one-way ANOVAs with post-hoc Tukey's HSD tests. The study of 191 rural officers found significant differences across age groups for both operational stress (F(2, 188) = 4.08, p = .018, η2 = .042) and organizational stress (F(2, 188) = 4.15, p = .017, η2 = .043), with officers aged 24-27 experiencing the highest stress levels. Organizational …
