The Healing Potential Of The Use Of Racial Socialization By School Counselors For African American Students, Vameker Banks
The Healing Potential Of The Use Of Racial Socialization By School Counselors For African American Students, Vameker Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American adolescents experience racial discrimination incidents more frequently than their peers from other racial backgrounds. Racial socialization (RS) has been proven to be effective in assisting African American youth in coping with racial stressors. School counselors play a crucial role in supporting African American youth dealing with race-related stress (RRS). Research has focused on the use of RS among African American parents and children, yet there is a research gap regarding the use of RS among school counselors. Further research is necessary to explore how school counselors implement RS to help students cope with and respond to stressful discriminatory …
Adult Sexual Grooming: A Systematic Review, Christin Aletky, Bonita Sharma, Jose Carbajal, Tia Eubank
Adult Sexual Grooming: A Systematic Review, Christin Aletky, Bonita Sharma, Jose Carbajal, Tia Eubank
Journal of Social Work in the Global Community
Grooming is the manipulation and intimidation of people into acts that may appear consensual but are in fact exploitative and harmful, activities they would not have chosen otherwise. Different legal definitions and shifting social perspectives on consent complicate efforts to determine whether a given behavior is a result of informed consent or a response to grooming behaviors. Most studies on grooming and sexual assault focus on adults grooming and abusing children—research on adults grooming other adults is scarce. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to conduct a systematic review of current research on the grooming of adults. We used …

Guardians Or Bystanders? Examining School Shooting Responses In The Southern United States, Andre L. Tompkins Ed.D.
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
School shootings challenge educational safety, demanding effective leadership strategies. The Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 children and 2 teachers, heightened concerns about campus vulnerabilities, urging administrators to prioritize student protection. I performed a qualitative study interviewing principals, teachers, parents, and community leaders to examine their experiences addressing campus threats. The findings revealed three themes: (1) ineffective leadership affects campus safety, (2) prompt actions enhance trust in leadership, and (3) connecting with others enhances safety. In this study, I spotlight the crucial role that proactive leadership plays in building the coalitions needed to …

Predictors Of Mental Health Seeking Behaviors Among Nigerian Immigrants, Francisca Iroh-Donawa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding the mental health seeking attitudes (MHSA) of Nigerian immigrants is a social concern for psychologists as it provides valuable information for developing outreach and clinical interventions. Unfortunately, there is scant and inconclusive research addressing potential predictors of MHSA among Nigerian immigrants, thus leaving clinicians with an unclear picture in understanding and the promoting the wellbeing of this vulnerable population. To address this gap, this study utilized the theory of planned behavior and Berry’s model of acculturation to explore if acculturation (positively), length of stay in host country (positively), religious and spiritual beliefs (negatively), and gender (women higher than men) …
Parent-Teacher Communication In The Infant-Toddler Setting, Shaquonna A. Alston
Parent-Teacher Communication In The Infant-Toddler Setting, Shaquonna A. Alston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a lack of understanding in terms of how to support effective parent-teacher communications in infant and toddler education programs. Early childhood educators are necessary to communicate with parents about what occurs in classrooms as parents are vital sources about what occurs in homes. The purpose of this study was to explore parent and teacher perspectives on parent-teacher communication to determine ways to improve and support home-school communication and support early learners. Bronfenbrenner's theory of ecological systems, particularly the mesosystem, which involves interactions between two or more settings such as homes and schools, guided the research. For this basic …

Challenges Faced By Women Released From Prison Leading To Criminal Recidivism, Bawana O Gayle
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women are more likely than men to leave prison and return to environments that are not stable, which increases the likelihood that they will engage in further criminal activities either because of being around others engaging in criminal activities or because of unstable living conditions and a lack of positive support from family and friends. This qualitative study used descriptive content analysis to analyze 30 peer-reviewed academic articles, with the purpose of understanding the challenges faced by African American and Caucasian women who were released from prison and understanding their difficulties in re-entering society. Improving Financial Sustainability Through A 990n-Sized Charity’S Fundraising-Activity Audit, Eileen Callejas
Improving Financial Sustainability Through A 990n-Sized Charity’S Fundraising-Activity Audit, Eileen Callejas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Current scholarly literature has asserted that large non-profit organizations benefit from conducting fundraising-activity audit portfolio analyses. However, suitable techniques and tools that ultra-small nonprofits (990N-sized charities) can use to improve their fundraising-activity analyses have not been clearly established. The research problem was in modifying tools that work efficiently for hyper-localized charities to compare the effectiveness of their fundraising-activities. Preferred tools were needed to reinforce ideation and align improvements within the charities’ known constraints. The purpose of this study was to explore three suitably modified instruments that could be used for fundraising-activity auditing. Based on Ostrom’s institutional analysis and development framework, …

Staff Education On Phq-9 Screening Tool Implementation, Sweetie Hope Doychinov
Staff Education On Phq-9 Screening Tool Implementation, Sweetie Hope Doychinov
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this DNP project was to evaluate whether a staff education program could measurably improve healthcare professionals' knowledge of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depression screening at the practicum site. Depression remains underdiagnosed in primary care, largely due to inconsistent use of standardized tools like the PHQ-9, which is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. This project addressed this gap by educating healthcare staff on the administration, scoring, and integration of the PHQ-9 into patient care, thereby enhancing their confidence and competence in its consistent application. The practice-focused question was the following: For healthcare staff at an …

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community
Social work field education programs have experienced changes throughout time, including adaptations to supervision of students in field education settings. Monitoring and developing field education supervision is an essential component of ensuring high-quality practicum experiences and satisfaction among both social work students and field instructors. Most recently, the COVID-19 global pandemic led most social work students and field instructors to a rapid shift in practicum placements from in-person to virtual learning; within the process, supervision changed as well. This study includes feedback from a small group of BSW students, MSW students, and field instructors regarding this transition in placement and …
