Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is an ill-health condition that can lead to other ill-health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, asthma, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. Obesity is also a condition that does not discriminate regarding age, gender, or race/ethnicity. In light of obesity’s status as a global epidemic, efforts for prevention and intervention treatments are needed to improve individuals’ health and quality of life. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine emotional eating, nutritional knowledge, and socioeconomic status, as predictors of body mass index (BMI). These factors were examined through the lens of general strain …

Scaffolded Simulation In Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Education, Lori Bobo, Stacy Mikel, Yolanda Chandler, Hungwei Tseng
Higher Learning Research Communications
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of using scaffolded clinical simulations on nursing students’ confidence in clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, and critical thinking skills. Next, we also attempted to gain insights into students’ perceptions of the benefits of scaffolded clinical simulations.
Method: We used a mixed-methods research design to investigate the impacts of using scaffolded clinical simulations on 133 second-semester baccalaureate nursing students’ confidence in clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, and critical thinking skills.
Results: Findings from this study indicate that students who perceived the benefits of scaffolded simulation activities (i.e., peer observations, debriefings, and self-reflections) …

Lived Experiences Involving Self-Efficacy Among African American Women Receiving Cardiac Peer Support, Shurnett Arnella Barrett
Lived Experiences Involving Self-Efficacy Among African American Women Receiving Cardiac Peer Support, Shurnett Arnella Barrett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among African American (AA) women in the United States. While there have been advances and more widespread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) support strategies to improve self-management skills among CVD patients, these approaches have not affected AA women, who continue to die from heart disease at significantly high rates. The purpose of this study was to examine real-life experiences of AA women with hypertensive heart disease who receive P2P support and the effect of that support on self-efficacy and cardiac health. The health belief model and social cognitive learning theory were the …

Intervention For Treating Sarcopenia Among Older Residents In A Skilled Nursing Facility, David A. Hernandez, Susan E. Hueck, Donna-Marie Phyllis Lanton
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The incidence of sarcopenia, a geriatric syndrome characterized by the progressive and generalized loss of muscle quantity or quality, increases with age and is associated with adverse health and quality of life outcomes. A 12-week strength training intervention program (STIP) was designed to improve measures of muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and quality of life in elderly patients with sarcopenia. Data were collected on these measures at 4-week intervals over 12 weeks. Results showed that the STIP was an effective intervention for reducing the characteristics associated with sarcopenia. Significant gains were made in muscle mass, grip strength, balance, gait …
Prevention Of Adult Obesity Through Targeting Adolescents With Counseling Educational Groups Combining Nutrition, Mindfulness, Self-Esteem, And Healthy Living, Kerri Shoumaker
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: The goal of this portfolio aims to prevent adult obesity through the immersion of counseling educational groups targeting adolescents within the communities of Kitsap County.
Significant Findings: Kitsap County, Washington, has an adult population of 214,142 people (United States Department of Commerce, 2022). Approximately 30% are obese, which is 2% higher than Washington state (CDC, n.d.-b). Obesity increases the risk factor for severe diseases, including depression, and is a major risk factor for premature death (Bergantin, 2020). Mitigating risk factors through bolstering protective factors is essential for obesity prevention at multiple levels of the Social-Ecological Model. Social Cognitive …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This qualitative interpretive study aimed to describe the experiences of 13 American Indians living in urban settings and their use of traditional healing and biomedical health services for type 2 diabetes. Urban American Indian adults living in the United States who used traditional healing and biomedical health services for type 2 diabetes were recruited for the study through purposive sampling, including snowball sampling. Thirteen participants completed semi-structured interviews. Participants reported positive experiences and barriers to traditional healing and Western biomedical services. They also discussed feelings of disorientation when diagnosed at a young age with type 2 diabetes but self-empowerment as …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The purpose of this study was to understand acculturation and race/ethnicity influences in the home and school environment that affect physical activity and nutrition in female adolescents attending middle school. A convenience sample of eight female adolescents (n = 2 Asian American, n = 2 Black, n =2 Latinx/Hispanic, and n = 2 White) was interviewed individually via Zoom. Responses regarding acculturation, physical activity, and nutrition in the home and school environment were analyzed using qualitative case study analysis. Three themes were identified: 1) experiences related to home, health, and culture, 2) the intersection between school meals and personal …

Factors Associated With Postpartum Care During The Fourth Stage Of Labor In Nepal: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study, Ashok Kumar Paudel, Muni Raj Chhetri, Ambika Baniya, Mamta Chhetri, Aafrin Gurung
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Postnatal care is an important part of maternal and neonatal care, and life-threatening complications can occur during the postpartum period. Empirical information on the level of postpartum care services is generally scarce in Nepal. Key elements of postpartum care during the fourth stage of labor include providing proper nutrition, promoting breastfeeding, and helping the mother manage any physical discomforts or challenges that may arise. This study investigated the level of postpartum care services delivered during the fourth stage of labor in a tertiary-level hospital in the Chitwan district of Nepal. A descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted among 148 women …
