Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah Jan 2008

Bridging The Gap: Home-School Partnerships In Kindergarten, Keenjal Pattni-Shah

Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study

Although home-school partnerships support Kindergarten children's development of vocabulary, the alphabetic principle, and phonological awareness, the mechanisms through which these partnerships are established and facilitated with immigrant parents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are largely unknown. Therefore, the major research questions that guided this qualitative, grounded theory study focused on exploring how successful Kindergarten teachers defined home-school partnerships with parents, the strategies the teachers used to communicate with parents, the ways these teachers reached out to parents to create and sustain partnerships, and how the teachers used these partnerships to support children's learning. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory served as the …

The integration of cost into design courses in engineering and engineering technology programs is necessary to provide graduating engineers the skills to become immediate contributors to the goals and profits of their chosen companies. There are many methods that can be used, including sophisticated decision science techniques. One example of a teaching and analysis technique developed for use in strength of materials course is described. In this example, a simple selection model, called a decision matrix, is used to decide what combination of factors provided a cost- effective design. This type of technique will allow teaching professionals to introduce and …

Quality Improvement In Higher Education Through Normalization Of Student Feedback Data Using Evolutionary Algorithm, S. Vishnupriyan, L. Govindarajan, G. Prabhakaran, K. P. Ramachandran

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Student Feedback is a vital information that helps not only to evaluate the existing academic practices but also to rectify the discrepancies if any, enabling continuous quality improvement. Often the educational institutions make decisions on the teaching and delivery strategies and requirements of the students based on the students’ Feedback. Due to various factors like the composition of the class in terms of student background, personal relationship with the teacher and other factors, the Feedback generally remains so scattered that at times it may not be possible to arrive at a conclusion based on the feedback. Any decision, based on …

We describe services that rate the performance of charitable organizations in the United States as a potential source of data for comparisons by donors and may be of interest and use to researchers. Such services have the potential to be considered as a surrogate for quality metrics in the nonprofit sector. The three services considered, The American Institute of Philanthropy, Charity Navigator, and the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau, create different rating schemes. Statistical analyses of a dataset comprised of charities in the Nonprofit Times Top 100 clarify points of similarity and difference among the services. We …

The Impact Of Powers-Of-Two Based Schedule On The Minimization Of Inventory Costs In A Multi Product Manufacturing Environment, V. Mahesh, Sandeep Dulluri, A. Chennakesava Reddy, C.S.P Rao Jan 2008

The Impact Of Powers-Of-Two Based Schedule On The Minimization Of Inventory Costs In A Multi Product Manufacturing Environment, V. Mahesh, Sandeep Dulluri, A. Chennakesava Reddy, C.S.P Rao

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This paper discusses about the scheduling problem of a multi product manufacturing industry. Often there has been a problem of applying optimization algorithms to solve the makespan minimization criterion of a job shop due to its inherent NP-hard nature. It is therefore unrealistic to try obtaining a solution through a commercial solver in polynomial time. In this context, we propose a computationally effective heuristic, which is based on the powers-of-two policy in inventory, for solving the minimum makespan problem of job shop scheduling. The research discussed in the current paper is a real time scheduling problem faced by a large …

Viability Analysis Of An Enterprise I, Charles Andoh Jan 2008

Viability Analysis Of An Enterprise I, Charles Andoh

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

The study derives the conditions for the profitability of any enterprise. So long as all the products produced by an enterprise are sold or will be bought, in theory, there are no bounds on the profit an enterprise can make. In practice bounds exists, and it is shown that the region of profitability declines if some products are not sold or bought and that an optimal profit can still be attained in this case with proper combination of products produced.

The literature on SCM that deals with strategies and technologies for effectively managing a supply chain is quite vast. In recent years, organizational performance measurement (PM) and metrics have received much attention from researchers and practitioners. Performance measurement and metrics have an important role to play in setting objectives, evaluating performance, and determining future courses of actions. …

A Model For Managing Civil Construction Company Systems, Carlos Alberto Pereira Soares, Christine Kowal Chinelli Jan 2008

A Model For Managing Civil Construction Company Systems, Carlos Alberto Pereira Soares, Christine Kowal Chinelli

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

At the beginning of the 20th century, organizations in a globalized and highly competitive environment face two options—either they stagnate by keeping their traditional old fashioned procedures, or they make the decision to look forward and change their current procedure, as they attempt to survive competition and become new competitive organizations that can play a more active role in the future market. Organizational changes are naturally linked to risks, and risks mean opportunities, as well as losses. However, as companies try to modify their procedures and adapt their staff and routine to some novelty, they have a good chance to …

Measuring Agility Of Organizations – A Comprehensive Agility Measurement Tool (Camt), Ameya S. Erande, Alok K. Verma Jan 2008

Measuring Agility Of Organizations – A Comprehensive Agility Measurement Tool (Camt), Ameya S. Erande, Alok K. Verma

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Since “Agility” is ability to respond to unpredictable changes with quick response and profitability, it is not industry specific. This “not industry specific” nature of agility makes it hard to assess and measure it on a fixed scale. Measurement of agility of an enterprise has been a major topic of research since inception of agility in 1991. Though some methods have been developed to measure agility, they mainly remain tied to manufacturing industry. As agility is present in all the industries, comprehensive tool to measure it is a necessity in order to determine responsiveness of an enterprise to external turbulences. …

Decomposition Heuristic With Partial Assignment Approach For Mlclsp-M Problem, Supakanya Chinprateep, Rein Boondiskulchok Jan 2008

Decomposition Heuristic With Partial Assignment Approach For Mlclsp-M Problem, Supakanya Chinprateep, Rein Boondiskulchok

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This research proposes a heuristic method, which decomposes the Multi-level Multi-item Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem with Multi-workstation (MLCLSP-M) into two phases which are an assignment with given lot size and a partial lot size with given assignment. Each iteration, the sub problem mathematical models are solved with AMPL/CPLEX 8.0.0 solver. An example is present for demonstration of the heuristic. The result indicate that the proposed heuristic (Partial Assignment – Lot size: PA-LS) give a satisfactory solution within faster solving time on comparison with the original mathematical model solving.

A Hybrid Differential Evolution Approach For Simultaneous Schedulingproblems In A Flexible Manufacturing Environment, M. V. Satish Kumar, C.S.P Rao, G. Rangajanardhan

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Scheduling of machines and transportation devices like Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in a Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is a typical N-P hard problem. Even though several algorithms were employed to solve this combinatorial optimization problem, most of the work concentrated on solving the problems of machines and material handling independently. In this paper the authors have attempted to schedule both the machines and AGVs simultaneously, with makespan minimization as objective, for which Differential Evolution (DE) is applied. Operations based coding is employed to represent the solution vector, which is further modified to suit the DE application. The authors have proposed two …

Exploring Fuzzy Set Concept In Priority Theory For Maintenance Strategy Selection Problem, Rajesh S. Prabhu Gaonkar, A. K. Verma, A. Srividya

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This paper proposes and presents a different approach of choosing an appropriate maintenance strategy using Saaty’s priority theory and fuzzy sets. As per the priority theory, weights are assigned to the decision criteria via pair wise comparison of criteria. Basic three types of maintenance strategies specifically corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance and eight maintenance decision criteria namely low maintenance cost, improved reliability, improved safety, high product quality, minimum inventory, return on investment, acceptance by labor, enhanced competitiveness have been considered to evaluate the most favorable strategy. Instead of usual practice of considering single value for “intensity of importance” …

A New Methodology For Recognition Of Milling Features From Step File, D. Sreeramulu, C.S.P. Rao Jan 2008

A New Methodology For Recognition Of Milling Features From Step File, D. Sreeramulu, C.S.P. Rao

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

In recent years, various researchers have come up with different ways and means to integrate CAD and CAM. Automatic feature recognition (AFR) from a CAD solid model for down stream applications like process planning and NC program, greatly contribute to the level of integration. When generating G&M codes from CAD DXF file, it leads to the loss of geometric information and the user is to edit and fills the details of the lost data. STEP is an international standard for geometric and non geometric data transfer between CAD, CAE and CAM and it replaces the IGES and DXF. For that …

Risk Visualization: A Mechanism For Supporting Unstructured Decision Making Processes, Akhilesh Chandra, Ravi Krovi, Balaji Rajagopalan Jan 2008

Risk Visualization: A Mechanism For Supporting Unstructured Decision Making Processes, Akhilesh Chandra, Ravi Krovi, Balaji Rajagopalan

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

The premise of this paper is that risk visualization has the potential to reduce the seemingly irrational behavior of decision makers. In this context, we present a model that enhances our understanding of visualization and how it can be used to support risk based decision making. The contribution of our research stems from the fact that decision making scenarios in business are characterized by uncertainty and a lack of structure. The complexity inherent in such scenarios is manifested in the form of unavailability of information, too many alternatives, inability to quantify alternatives, or lack of knowledge of the payoff matrix. …

A Mathematical Approach For Technology Selection In The Presence Of Slightly Non-Homogeneous Technologies, Reza Farzipoor Saen

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

The assumption of classical technology selection models is based on complete homogeneity of technologies. In spite of this assumption in many applications some technologies do not comprehensively consume common inputs to comprehensively supply common outputs. The objective of this paper is to propose a model for selecting slightly non-homogeneous technologies. A numerical example demonstrates the application of the proposed method.

Exploring Information Technology Flexibility And Increased Complexity: Is Management Prepared?, Lawrence R. Ness Jan 2008

Exploring Information Technology Flexibility And Increased Complexity: Is Management Prepared?, Lawrence R. Ness

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Information technology (IT) flexibility has become a key enabler of increased IT effectiveness, towards improved IT-business alignment and sustained competitive advantage (Ness, 2005). However, as has been shown through this exploratory literature review, higher levels of IT flexibility also increase the level of complexity to be managed (Young, 2007; Rettig, 2007). Unfortunately, it was also found that management does not appear to be aware and/or prepared to manage the increased complexity (Wheatley, 2000; Lee, 2003), possibly resulting in more harm than good. This study are hoped to alert both IT and business management as to the opportunities existing within the …

Prognostic Factors Of Varying Treatment Outcomes For Onychomycosis (Nail Fungal Infection) Patients, Bin Cai

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prevalence of onychomycosis, as high as 26.9% in the general population, can be reduced by improving current antifungal treatment. This could be accomplished by understanding prognostic factors, especially healthy nail growth, associated with achieving complete cure. This population-based study aimed to evaluate if healthy nail length or percentage of total full nail length as healthy can be early indictors for complete cure. Logistics regression analyses were performed by comparing variables between a population who achieved the complete cure and a population who failed after both populations received the same antifungal treatment in two large randomized double-blinded clinical trials that assessed …

Student -Teacher Relationships And Their Effect On Student Achievement At The Secondary Level, Cheryl Dix Modlin Jan 2008

Student -Teacher Relationships And Their Effect On Student Achievement At The Secondary Level, Cheryl Dix Modlin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has demonstrated that adolescent learning increases with a proactive type of student-teacher relationship. However, due to the lack of common expectations for a positive student-teacher relationship, a disconnection occurs for some students, who then may become disengaged at school and may not reach their full potential academically, socially, or developmentally. This mixed method sequential, exploratory design focused on a Midwestern secondary school of approximately 250 students. The disconnection between students and teachers was addressed by investigating positive student-teacher relationships; student achievement; and the connection between student-teacher relationships and achievement. Qualitative data were collected using focus groups of students …

All participants were married or in a cohabitating relationship; they were primarily White and educated. Structural equation modeling was used to test multiple meditational models. When the model was tested for the entire sample, control beliefs were found to serve as a mediator, significantly mediating the relationship between social …

Children’S Goal Profiles And Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate: Interactive Association With Self-Determined Motivation And Affective Patterns In Physical Education, Sam Carr, Daniel A. Weigand Jan 2008

Children’S Goal Profiles And Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate: Interactive Association With Self-Determined Motivation And Affective Patterns In Physical Education, Sam Carr, Daniel A. Weigand

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Developing an understanding of youngster’s motivation for physical education (PE) is becoming increasingly important. This study examined the interactive effects of children’s multiple goal profiles and perceptions of the motivational climate on indices of self-determined motivation and affect in 429 students (201 boys, 228 girls; M age = 11.2, SD = .39) in northwest England. MANOVA results revealed a significant (p < .05) main effect for goal profiles and perceived motivational climate. Moreover, a significant interaction between goal profiles and perceived climate was found: Children with high mastery/high performance profiles had high levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation, regardless of the climate. In contrast, other profile groups (i.e., high mastery/low performance, low mastery/high performance, low mastery/low performance) were more likely to have high levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation from exposure to a perceived mastery climate. These results are discussed in terms of the contribution they appear to make to recent analyses of multiple goals.
