Combatting The Rising Rate Of Sti Cases In San Diego, Ca, Tracy Tuong
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: The goal of this social change portfolio is to combat the rise in transmission rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through increasing access to education on sexual health and quality health care, including contraceptives and STI testing. Significant Findings: San Diego has seen a rise in the spread of STIs, disproportionately affecting young men and women of color. This rise can be attributed to risk factors such as low socioeconomic status (SES), discrimination, and lack of access to quality healthcare or prevention services. Working to reduce the social stigma associated with STIs, providing quality sexual health education, and …

Empowering Choices: A Strategy For Sexual Health And Sti Prevention Among Adolescent Girls In Fort Bend County, Texas, Mindy L. Jones
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Significant Findings: In Fort Bend County, Texas, the rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescent girls, especially chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, have become a significant public health and mental health challenge. These infections not only impact physical health, leading to severe outcomes like infertility and increased HIV risk, but also affect mental health, educational attainment, and economic stability (Johnson-Minter et al., 2020; CDC, 2021). Adolescents, particularly young females aged 15-24, disproportionately bear the burden, with social and structural barriers such as stigma, lack of access to healthcare, and inadequate sexual education exacerbating the situation (Garcia et al., 2023; …

Lived Experiences Involving Self-Efficacy Among African American Women Receiving Cardiac Peer Support, Shurnett Arnella Barrett
Lived Experiences Involving Self-Efficacy Among African American Women Receiving Cardiac Peer Support, Shurnett Arnella Barrett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among African American (AA) women in the United States. While there have been advances and more widespread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) support strategies to improve self-management skills among CVD patients, these approaches have not affected AA women, who continue to die from heart disease at significantly high rates. The purpose of this study was to examine real-life experiences of AA women with hypertensive heart disease who receive P2P support and the effect of that support on self-efficacy and cardiac health. The health belief model and social cognitive learning theory were the …
Textbook Tasks For Social Change: Instantiation Of Development Debates And Interposition Of Pedagogical Interventions In Media Literacy Education, John N. Ponsaran
Textbook Tasks For Social Change: Instantiation Of Development Debates And Interposition Of Pedagogical Interventions In Media Literacy Education, John N. Ponsaran
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
As materialization of their discursive stance as instructional communicators and media producers, textbook authors instantiate various development debates as well as interpose a wide range of pedagogical interventions for critical reflection and adoption by learners. This qualitative study sought to situate these development debates and the counterpart pedagogical interventions within the context of textbook task design as an application and embodiment of social justice communication. The development debates serve as the proposed contexts for media text analyses, reflective exercises, case studies, and media production, among others. Correspondingly, the interposition of interventions allows students to make sense of and act upon …

Unmasking Structural Racism In U.S. Medical Education: Advancing Equity For Underrepresented Medical Students, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Destiney Kirby, Asia Nichole Hodges, Brianna Clark, Stephen Sinatra Jr.
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The COVID pandemic cast a harsh light on the structural and systemic health inequalities that exist in American society and in U.S. medical education. Black and Brown communities were disproportionately affected, and the pandemic highlighted the need for a diverse physician and healthcare workforce. Both the lack of equitable, high-quality healthcare in underrepresented communities and the obstacles that students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) experience in medical school are direct consequences of the structural racism that flourishes in U.S. medical schools and healthcare institutions. In this article, we explain structural racism and how it has manifested itself in medical …

Higher Learning Research Communications
Objectives: Little is known about how international functions of higher education, such as exchange programmes, can be resumed during recovery from a disruptive global crisis, such as COVID-19. We collected the opinions of administrators of international exchange programmes regarding their plans to resume their exchange programmes in the recovery phase and identified variations in the responses concerning institution type (public vs. private) and the presence or absence of a medical school.
Method: We used multiple-choice survey questions in our study, resulting in 180 valid responses. We examined overall patterns using descriptive statistics and institutional uniqueness using Fisher’s exact test.
Results: …

Relationship Between Treatment Comorbidities And Hiv Viral Suppression Among People Who Live With Aids In Johannesburg., Nwogo Immaculata Ekeji, Tolulope A. Osoba, Hebatullah Tawfik, Mehdi Agha
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
HIV has globally infected over 37.9 million people, of which 28.2 million (73%) are on antiretroviral treatment, and 66% of those on treatment are virally suppressed. In South Africa, however, low rate of viral suppression (47%) among people living with HIV is a major health problem that has continued to fuel HIV prevalence. A cross-sectional quantitative research design was used to investigate the relationship between treatment comorbidities and viral suppression among HIV-infected adults aged 18–49 who were diabetic, had cancer, or tuberculosis in Johannesburg. HIV Care Continuum formed the theoretical framework for this research. An existing HIV-infected patient de-identifiable dataset …

Condom Use Self-Efficacy Score And Risky Sexual Behavior Among High School Students In Southern Ethiopia, Gizachew Kebede Bassore, Hadi Danawi, Linda G. Marc, Chinaro Kennedy
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
There is emerging evidence of a rise in new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in Ethiopia. This may partly be explained by an increase in risky sexual behaviors among high school adolescents. The current study was conducted to explore the association between a set of predictor variables (comprehensive HIV knowledge and condom use self-efficacy score) and an outcome variable of risky sexual behavior among high school adolescents in the Angacha District of Southern Ethiopia. The study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design to answer the research question. Primary data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 374 participants using a stratified …

Education On Protective Measures For Primary Care Staff During Covid Outbreaks, Lenina Ochioza Ukeju Chi-Ukpai
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the emergence of COVID-19, healthcare workers have been in continuous risk of infection because of the way the disease is transmitted. Hence, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is important during the pandemic. The aim of this project was to increase healthcare workers’ and patients’ disease protection and prevention. This staff education project assessed the knowledge of proper PPE practice among healthcare workers who were in close contact with COVID-19 patients and provided lectures and practice in proper donning and doffing of PPE. Guided by the Lewin theory of change, the knowledge of the 9 health care …
A Qualitative Study Of Moral Distress In Physicians During The Covid-19 Pandemic, William Washington
A Qualitative Study Of Moral Distress In Physicians During The Covid-19 Pandemic, William Washington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract The spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) created a pandemic and had a world-shattering effect on healthcare organizations. As a result, many healthcare professionals were exposed to health situations that stretched them beyond their professional ethics, mental health, and emotional capacity. Throughout the last 30 years, moral distress has been understood as the type of stress that medical professionals experience. Research has substantially grown regarding COVID-19 and moral distress, exposing gaps in the ability of experts to care as they should. Moral distress was a term created to define the emotional disruption that occurs when a professional cannot work within their …
Strategies For Clinical Managers To Reduce Nosocomial Infections, Samisha Lynn Davis
Strategies For Clinical Managers To Reduce Nosocomial Infections, Samisha Lynn Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Increasing nosocomial infection rates threaten patient safety when approximately 100 million patients annually acquire at least one nosocomial infection during their hospital stay. Some clinical managers lack strategies to reduce the incidence and costs of nosocomial infections. Clinical managers need training in proactive infection control guidelines that may reduce infection rates and increase profitability. Grounded in adaptive leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore successful strategies that clinical managers used to reduce incidence and costs associated with nosocomial infections. The participants were four clinical managers employed by health care organizations in the Southeast Texas …

Internal Population Displacement And Vaccination Completion, Malnutrition, And Respiratory Infections Among Children In The Central African Republic, Francois Xavier Batalingaya
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Forced displacement in fragile and conflict-affected countries has the potential to disrupt access to basic primary healthcare services such as immunization. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between internal population displacement and vaccination completion, malnutrition, and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) while controlling for maternal characteristics of wealth index, education level, and residence status in the Central African Republic. The socioecological model underpinned this cross-sectional study that used a secondary dataset collected in 2018 – 2019 and maintained by UNICEF. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression tests were used to analyze the data. The findings of this study …
Association Between Dietary Phytoestrogen Intake And Xenoestrogen Exposure And Estrogen-Dependent Cancers, Pisita Bolsue
Association Between Dietary Phytoestrogen Intake And Xenoestrogen Exposure And Estrogen-Dependent Cancers, Pisita Bolsue
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The role of circulating estrogens and the impact of lifetime exposure to multiple sources of exogenous estrogens as factors in carcinogenesis were not well understood. Research showed conflicting results when dietary phytoestrogen (PE) intake and xenoestrogen (XE) exposure occurred independently and when co-exposed. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between dietary PE intake and XE exposure and the development of estrogen-dependent cancers in an epidemiological context. The advanced model of the epidemiology triangle was the theoretical framework for the current study in which binary logistic regression was employed on secondary data from the 2003–2006 …

The Relationship Between Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis And Race, Gender, And Age, Johnny James Mcgrew
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this quantitative correlational design using secondary data from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment was to examine the relationship between different types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), specifically, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, and race, gender, and age in the United States. This study is significant because it could assist medical personnel to focus on more personally-based STI treatments. This study could also lead to a call for more research regarding sexual health programs across the nation, individuals’ willingness to share personal information regarding STIs, and how sexual health programs could increase testing for STIs. The study …
