Relationship Between Burnout And Academic Teaching Level Among Nursing Faculty, Erica Lynn Sciarra
Relationship Between Burnout And Academic Teaching Level Among Nursing Faculty, Erica Lynn Sciarra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nursing faculty function as healthcare providers, educators, mentors, advisors, and researchers, which contributes to the development of emotional exhaustion or burnout due to role overload. Symptoms of burnout may vary among nursing faculty depending on academic teaching level, tenure status, and educational preparation and may influence the physical and psychological health of nursing faculty, potentially affecting work productivity, career longevity, and the number of future nurses educated. The purposes of this study, guided by Maslach’s multidimensional burnout theory and the job demands resources model, were to determine (a) if there was a difference in level of burnout between graduate and …

Media Exposure To Crime, Fear Of Crime, And Social Interaction Anxiety, Genea Shoulders
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2000, approximately 30% of all news stories in mass media focused on crime. According to research, increased exposure to the media directly correlates to an increased fear of crime; however, little research has been conducted into this influential relationship and the extent of which it could affect a person’s social interaction anxiety. Therefore, the study’s purpose was to examine the relationship and consequential impact of media exposure and the extent of which the fear of crime had on individuals’ social interaction anxiety levels. Through a quantitative approach, this study used the theory of cultivation. Question one examined the effect …

Associate Degree Nursing Graduates’ Experiences Of The Transition From Student To Nurse, Katherine Margaret Slusser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Attrition among newly graduated nurses remains a top concern among nursing leaders in the United States. Many published studies about new graduate nurses focus on bachelors-prepared nurses or on mixed populations of nurses that include both associate and baccalaureate degree graduates. No published studies were located that focused specifically on the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) graduate. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of transition after graduation and into professional nursing of newly employed nurses who graduated from an ADN program. The theoretical basis for this study was Meleis’s transition theory. The research question …

Learned Helplessness Among Acute Care Nurses And Its Influence On Inpatient Fall Incidence, Jennifer Glendening
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over one million inpatient falls with injury are reported across the United States annually resulting in harm which are consistently linked to the quality of nursing care delivery in acute inpatient settings. Learned helplessness (LH) emerges as a behavioral concept to consider among acute care nurses, specifically medical-surgical nurses, because the effects of LH may include an overall decrease in efforts, persistence, and learning due to the repeated exposure to the challenges of balancing complex patients and working environments. The purpose of this study, guided by Donabedian’s model, was to determine if there was a relationship between acute care nurses’ …

Effects Of Short-Term Intensive Insulin Therapy In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Management, Ernest Mwathi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is a chronic illness affecting millions of individuals in the United States and is the seventh leading cause of death. Most of the Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients manage their illness with non-insulin therapies resulting in inadequate glycemic control but there are times when they experience inadequate glycemic control and require short-term intensive insulin therapy (SIIT). Despite proven effectiveness of SIIT, there is a lack of research focusing on the effectiveness of clinical practice where providers revert their clients to non-insulin therapy after SIIT. The focus of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate pre/post data and …

Need To Belong, Fear Of Missing Out, And Social Media Use: Predictors Of Perceived Social Rejection, Linda K. Perna
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The decline in mental health among U.S. college students is a significant concern. Research suggests that social media use may contribute to this decline. Heavy reliance on social media has been linked to feelings of loneliness and disconnection, psychological distress, and a fear of missing out on rewarding social experiences, which may ultimately trigger feelings of social rejection. Using a foundation of need to belong theory, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine individual differences in the need to belong, fear of missing out, and social media use as predictors of emotional and behavioral reactions to ambiguous social …

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Trauma is a manifestation of the pain and experiences that holistically impact an individual physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually, and interpersonally. One element of trauma that is in need of exploring is its impact collectively. That is, the shared hurt by a community that transcends a personal silo. In particularly in the Black community, an ethnically marginalized community, this injury has a history of being “politically instigated…with aims at inflicting collective injury against certain groups thus undermines a collective wellbeing of a people” (as cited in Annie, 2020). This social phenomena, combined with personal experiences sexual violence that disproportionately impact …

Opioid addiction is a significant health problem in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Opioid addiction can result in death from overdoses, economic hardship including high costs for treatment, decreased work productivity, and legal involvement (NIDA, n.d.). Mental health issues including opioid addiction are widespread and therefore difficult and costly to help all those afflicted. PASPA was passed by Congress in 1992 to prohibit state-sanctioned sports gambling, except in four states: Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon, which already established legal sports betting regulations. New Jersey failed to apply in 1991 to be added to the list of exempt states …

Probate Attorneys’ Understanding Of The Inclusion Of The Lucid Interval In Testamentary Capacity Proceedings, Jeremy Cassius
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study focused on the experience of probate attorneys with the lucid interval in contested will cases. There is a gap in the research for understanding the lucid interval for people who live with dementia. Dementia can affect the testamentary capacity (TC) of a testator who is signing a will because the testator may not understand all the property that is in their possession. This causes difficulties and conflict for families when a loved one dies. It can also cause the testator to be susceptible to undue influence. The present study analyzed data from interviews with 6 probate attorneys about …
