The Effectiveness Of African American Male Faith-Based Juvenile Delinquency, Dewaun C. Martin Jan 2020

The Effectiveness Of African American Male Faith-Based Juvenile Delinquency, Dewaun C. Martin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Southeast region of the United States is experiencing an increase in the amount of crime in the African American community particularly among juveniles. Furthermore, the rate of African American juveniles being arrested is higher than arrest rates among other races. This problem reveals the need for reformation and rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism in the juvenile justice system. Research indicates that juveniles who have attachments to a conventional institution commit fewer delinquent acts. Although attachments to sports and other programs are positively associated with the social bond theory, it was unclear what aspects of the church program might influence …

Psychiatric Residents’ Perceptions Of Cultural Competency Training For Mental Health Care Delivery, Carol A. Matthews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Considering and respecting patients’ cultural needs is integral in providing culturally competent mental health care. Thus, the focus of this qualitative case study was on how the academic training of psychiatric residents in cultural competency affected the delivery of culturally responsive mental health patient care. The conceptual framework of Jeffery’s cultural competence and confidence model grounded …

Hispanic learners have lagged behind their White peers by about 7% in completing an associate degree within 3 years, a lag in completion that has closed to some degree over the decade of 2004 to 2014 but still persists. Since the percentage of Hispanic learners who are adults is increasing, the impact of the lag on this demographic could further increase. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine the expectations Hispanic adult learners have regarding supports a community college provides, especially if it aspires to be designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The conceptual framework consisted of …

Instructional Strategies Teachers Use To Improve Literacy Performance Of Children In Poverty, Carlene Leonie Miller-Thompson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Poverty has an on-going and broadening negative effect on students’ academic performance. At the research school, 78% of the students in poverty performed below proficiency on the national literacy test in 2012. In 2013, the number was 68%, and in 2014, 80% performed below proficiency. The purpose of this research study was to explore the instructional strategies that teachers are using with these students in poverty. Piaget’s cognitive development and Vygotsky’s social development theories established the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions that this study sought to answer at the local school setting were what instructional strategies teachers …

A Meta-Analysis Of E-Recruitment Applicant Experience, Perception, And Behavior, Diem J. Mooney

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

E-recruitment, an Internet-based approach for recruitment, has been shown to be an efficient method for organizations to reach a target candidate population. However, challenges with recruitment websites have resulted in high rates of job seekers abandoning an online application before completion. A quantitative meta-analytic review of literature from 2009 to 2019 was conducted to determine the relationship between applicant user experience (UX) when interacting with an organization’s e-recruitment website, applicant perceptions of the hiring organization, and applicant behaviors related to pursuing employment. The review initially considered 105 candidate articles, of which 41 were consider after applying initial inclusions criteria. After …

Association Of Landfall Atlantic Tropical Storms And Human Cases Of Locally Acquired West Nile Virus Infection In Florida, Jackson G. Mosley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

West Nile virus (WNv) is the most widely distributed flavivirus and considered a vector-borne pathogen of global significance. During the study period from 2002 to 2018, WNv had the highest incidence of locally acquired human cases when compared to any other mosquito borne illness in Florida with 373 cases documented during the study period. The purpose of the study is to determine if there is an association between Florida landfall tropical storms (LTS) and the incidence of locally acquired human WNv cases from 2002 through 2018. The study used a retrospective ecological study design guided by the epidemiological triad model …

Globally there are over 700 million people living in extreme poverty and in Ghana, over 6 million face this challenge. Progress is being recorded but there is no research that has examined the relationship between financial inclusion, social inclusion and poverty reduction in a country where multidimensional poverty is high. The purpose of this within-subject quasi-experimental correlational study is to determine the …

Population-Level Determinants Of Cholera Incidence In African Countries, Ngoy Nsenga Jan 2020

Population-Level Determinants Of Cholera Incidence In African Countries, Ngoy Nsenga

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cholera remains endemic in Africa, with limited access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation as 2 of the main drivers of its dissemination. Few studies have examined the impact of health system capacity, even though it plays an important role in prevention, early detection, and response to a cholera outbreak. Grounded in the ecosocial theory of infectious disease dissemination, this quantitative ecological study explored the effect of social vulnerability (as measured by access to safe drinking water and sanitation, rate of open defecation, poverty, income inequality, gender inequality, and adult literacy) and health system (as measured by health financing …

Systematic Review Of Falls Among Older Individuals In The Long- Term Care Settings, Nonyelum Patience Odenigbo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Falls are common in the older population and can result in disability, increased dependence, or mortality. Falls have received increased attention in the literature as the most common cause of injuries among older individuals. The incidence of falls in the older population has a positive correlation with adverse health issues necessitating major lifestyle adjustments. The problem is magnified for older patients in long-term care settings where they are 3 times more susceptible to falls. The purpose of this project study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to understand the impact and incidence of fall rates among older …

Hiv Knowledge And Behaviors Among Young People In Kenya And Lesotho, Beatrice Ochieng

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has a great burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and high new HIV infection rates among youths age 15-24 years. Exploring The Use Of Familismo To Manage Depression Among Elderly Latino Women, Denise Ramos

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As the elderly population continues to increase in the United States, so does the concern of major depressive disorder. This study aimed to explore the use of familismo (intense importance and attachment the Latino culture places on nuclear and …

A need for research aimed at exploring possible barriers that may impede the adoption and implementation of community paramedicine programs has been identified by the National EMS Advisory Board, the North Central EMS Institute, and the Joint Committee on Rural Emergency Care. The purpose of this study was to explore …

The Impact Of Sex Offender Registration Laws On Offenders’ Reintegration Into Society, Stephanie Rose

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Information related to the experiences of sex offenders required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act of 2006 is predominantly based on quantitative data, and the majority of information relates to the factors that contribute to sexual offenses, recidivism rates, and public opinion of the sex offender registry.
