Perceptions Of Juvenile Justice Personnel On Effects Of Detention Assessments On Low-Risk Offenders, Desire' Angela Hulse-Stewart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nationally, arrest rates have declined; however, Georgia faces disproportionately high crime rates, mainly among African American juveniles in Fulton County. Juvenile recidivism has been a long-standing issue. Researchers have demonstrated that risk factors impact recidivism amongst youth offenders at 17 and 18 years of age. Researchers have not yet been able to establish how risk factors impact recidivism risks of low-risk youth offenders. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of Fulton County juvenile justice personnel on the detention assessment’s effects on low-risk youth offenders and impact on recidivism risks of African American youth. Heidegger’s …

Perceptions Of Contraceptive Practice Among Arab American Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence, Linda Humaidan-Zayed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There has been limited research on Arab Americans as they are an unidentified minority population. The specific research problem addressed through this study is that there is little research pertaining to the role of intimate partner violence (IPV) in poor contraceptive practice among Arab Americans, contributing to the larger problem of unwanted pregnancies, reproductive coercion, and other aspects of reproductive health. The problem with a high prevalence rate of IPV among Arab American women is that they are more susceptible to becoming pregnant and not accessing the reproductive health services that they may need. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative …

Growing Up In The United Arab Emirates: The Cross-Cultural Identities Of Adult Third Culture Kids, Ninar Itani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While research on the multicultural experiences of refugees and immigrants is abundant, research on the psychological well-being (PWB) of third culture kids (TCKs) is limited. Using Useem’s model of TCK identity, refined further by Pollock, this research addressed the relationship between gender, cultural homelessness (CH), and cross-cultural identity (CCI), and how these predictors may impact self-esteem and PWB among adult TCKs (ATCKs) who grew up in the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, an intersectionality framework was used to conceptualize identity formation in TCKs. The primary hypothesis was that gender, CH, and belonging to a CCI predict self-esteem and PWB in ATCKs …

The Association Between Vocational Training Programs And Recidivism In A South Florida Prison, Audrey Karlene Ives
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractTo lower recidivism, a private rehabilitation and correctional facility (PRCF) in South Florida provides educational and therapeutic programs to inmates; however, the facility reported increased recidivism rates for several successive years. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association between 12 vocational training programs at the local PRCF and recidivism. The study’s theoretical framework was Hirschi’s social bond theory of attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief. The research question sought to determine whether significant associations exist between specific vocational training programs and recidivism. A convenience sample of 187 inmates who completed one vocational training program and left the …

Administrators’ Perceptions Of Knowledge Of Idea Regulations Related To Disciplining Students With Disabilities, Annette Jackson-Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThere is a nationwide concern among students, parents, and educators regarding high school administrators’ inequitable disciplinary practices and students with disabilities (SWD) policies in the U.S. The problem addressed in this study was that high school SWDs in a local Midwestern urban school district have higher rates of suspension from school than their nondisabled peers. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand local administrators’ perceptions of their knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) related to disciplining SWDs to gain insight into their decisions to suspend. The research questions …

Strategies Retail Managers Use To Reduce Voluntary Employee Turnover, Dawn Nicol Jackson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Voluntary employee turnover results in considerable costs for organizations, loss of tacit knowledge, depletion of high-quality goods and services, and economic hardship in local communities. Leaders flourish by maintaining knowledge embedded in the organization. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies retail managers from the southwest region of the United States use to reduce voluntary employee turnover. Data were collected using in-person and virtual semi-structured interviews with ten retail managers from different establishments who used successful strategies to reduce voluntary employee turnover. Four themes emerged from the thematic analysis: effective communication …
Family Factors In Career Decisions To Enter Education Amongst Black Urban Millennials, Christian Jacobs
Family Factors In Career Decisions To Enter Education Amongst Black Urban Millennials, Christian Jacobs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe interactions a student has with a teacher help form their relationship with the educational experience. Importantly, a lack of representation can greatly impact the future impression of oneself and the world. For students of color, the balance of teachers who represent their ethnic and cultural diversity in the education field is greatly skewed toward White educators. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study, which was rooted in the self-determination theory, was to examine if and to what extent various factors, including parental, household, environmental, gender, and ethnicity impact Black millennials’ decision to go into the educational field. Participant criteria …

End-Of-Life Education For Long-Term Care Nurses, Naquita Altidor Jacques
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Long-term care (LTC) nurses play a crucial role in preserving the quality of life of terminally ill patients. However, many identify deficits in skills, education, and training for end-of-life (EOL) care. The objective of this project was to educate LTC nurses caring for individuals reaching the end of their lives on EOL care. The practice-oriented question concerned whether an evidence-based educational program improved nurses’ knowledge related to EOL care and confidence in caring for EOL patients and families. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium's evidence-based educational module was used to provide the content. Rosswurm and Larrabee’s model for change to evidence-based …

Women’S Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment In Liberia’S Public Sector, Gbelly Arrington Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite progress towards gender equality, women continue to be affected by quid pro quo sexual harassment in Liberia workplaces. They are often viewed as sexual objects rather than contributing players toward sustainable development. Using Feinberg’s harm principle as the interpretive lens and the hermeneutic phenomenology as a method of analysis, women’s lived experiences of quid pro quo sexual harassment in Liberia’s public sector were explored. Purposeful sampling employing in-depth semistructured interviews of 13 working women using Zoom was used for thematic content analyses. Analysis of the data produced three major themes: (a) sex for employment or sexployment, (b) hesitancy in …

Micronutrient Deficiency After Bariatric Surgery, Naitte P. Jordan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Bariatric surgery is the most clinically efficacious treatment for obesity and obesityrelated comorbidities. Many patients undergoing bariatric surgery have preexisting levels of nutritional deficiencies. The prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies may increase after surgery, and long-term nutritional monitoring and follow-up are essential factors for postoperative patient care; yet advanced practice nurses may not be accustomed to caring for patients or treating micronutrient deficiencies. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to collect and analyze clinical evidence to determine what can the APN with the best available evidence do for implementing protocols and procedures to prevent, detect, and monitor for …

Quality Of Life In Young Adults With Dyslexia, Nathan Kirkegaard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has emphasized cognitive differences and emotional and behavioral dysfunctionality related to dyslexia. However, there has been limited emphasis on quality-of-life (QOL) experiences on adults with dyslexia within educational, work, family, and social environments. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore the lived experiences of adults with dyslexia to better understand QOL experiences. The integrative quality-of-life (IQOL) theory was used to address QOL from a subjective, existential, and objective perspective to define what QOL means more completely. The narrative approach was used to explore chain-of-event themes throughout a participant’s told story to examine QOL experiences. Seven participants were …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA state-wide Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) seeks to assist high school (HS) students at risk of not graduating in completing HS credentials. The problem was that there was no formal state-wide process for monitoring the program to understand its impact. The purpose of this quantitative exploratory study was to determine whether the graduation variables that were published by the state could be used to predict ISAEP GED attainment. The Theory of Action proposed by McPartland and Jordan guided two main research questions to see if ISAEP GED attainment could be predicted by categories of HS completion, and if …

Exploring Systemic Reform In Criminal Justice For Afro-Americans Based On Critical Policy Ethnography, Cozetta Butts Lamore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The persistent disproportionate rates of Afro-American involvement within the criminal justice system at all levels have resulted in historic levels of unexplained mass incarceration. Despite federal guidance, the pandemic of unexplained mass incarceration persists. Some studies have noted that the lack of academic attention may be one of the primary reasons for the lack of change. Others have noted the need for centering and lifting the perspective of those who have been most impacted by these racial disparities. The intent of this study was to offer a qualitative close-up examination and analysis from the perspective of impacted populations. The ecological …

Examining Health Care Utilization Among Adult Heart Disease Patients With Self-Reported Depressive Symptoms, Courtney R. Lockett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Health care costs are most commonly concentrated among small groups of high-cost patients, or high utilizers. Many of these patients receive unnecessary and ineffective care and often critical health care needs can go unmet, even when substantial care from multiple sources is received. Thus, there is a need to look into high utilizing patients for not only quality improvement but also effective resource allocation. The operational problem for health care administrators is managing resources and improving quality of care by targeting specific medical conditions that may be high utilizers of medical resources. The purpose of this study was to identify …
