Food Safety And Free Trade Area In East Africa, Diana Ogwal Akullo
Food Safety And Free Trade Area In East Africa, Diana Ogwal Akullo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Africans experience high incidences of foodborne diseases annually leading to poor public health, yet there is limited information on implementation of food laws in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya from the perspectives of public officials with knowledge of and experience with implementing food laws, policies, and regulations to inform policy on food security and safety and help mitigate foodborne diseases and associated trade concerns between countries. The study’s research question involved identifying the perceptions of public officials on the impact of food laws on the food safety delivery systems in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The study applied complex adaptive system theory …
Retention Strategies For Managers Of Generation Y Employees, Michael Askari
Retention Strategies For Managers Of Generation Y Employees, Michael Askari
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover may lead to increased business costs, degradation of employee mental health, and more taxes on social programs. Managers of Generation Y employees are concerned with turnover because Generation Y employees tend to leave within 12 months of being hired. Grounded in the job embeddedness theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore management retention strategies to reduce Generation Y turnover. The participants were six managers of Generation Y employees from six retail businesses who successfully retained employees for more than 12 months. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, journal notes, and a review of public …
An Examination Of Counselor Turnover And Its Impact On Quality Behavioral Health Services, Leslie M. Beale
An Examination Of Counselor Turnover And Its Impact On Quality Behavioral Health Services, Leslie M. Beale
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Behavioral health organizations often face the challenge of high employee turnover rates, which can critically affect their ability to treat mental illnesses successfully. High counselor turnover at one such organization, BHOX, threatens the provision of timely access to quality mental care. This qualitative case study examined counselor turnover and its impact on the quality of behavioral health services. The Baldrige Excellence Framework was used to guide this descriptive case study of a nonprofit behavioral health organization on the East Coast of the United States, which serves men and women struggling with mental health disorders and substance abuse addictions. The data …
Organizational Characteristics As Predictors Of Hospital Accreditation, Rebecca B. Graystone
Organizational Characteristics As Predictors Of Hospital Accreditation, Rebecca B. Graystone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Hospital accreditation has had wide and longstanding acceptance as a key quality tool to drive efficient, effective healthcare. Researchers have more recently questioned factors commonly related with accreditation achievement given accreditation’s general association to better patient care, risk management, and cost reduction. Even less information was known about predictors of accreditation failure, which could be addressed by hospital administrators in advance of seeking application. Accordingly, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine if hospital structures and processes were predictors of accreditation failure. The research questions explored hospital size, ownership status, geographic location, hospital leadership, empowerment, practice, and …
Socio-Environmental Factors Related To Prevalence Of Childhood Uncontrolled Asthma In Marion County, Indiana, Haoua Chaoueye
Socio-Environmental Factors Related To Prevalence Of Childhood Uncontrolled Asthma In Marion County, Indiana, Haoua Chaoueye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractDespite the availability of effective asthma control, the prevalence of uncontrolled asthma continues to increase worldwide, particularly among children. Marion County children experience more uncontrolled asthma than the Indiana state averages. Exposure to socioenvironmental factors may play a pivotal role in childhood uncontrolled asthma; however, there is still limited recent research about this relationship. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between the specific socioenvironmental factors (income, tobacco smoke, indoor mold, household pets, and pests) and the prevalence of childhood uncontrolled asthma in Marion County, IN. This study used secondary data collected between 2018, …
Increasing Self-Awareness In Nursing, Adrienne Irene Abbot
Increasing Self-Awareness In Nursing, Adrienne Irene Abbot
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nursing self-awareness is essential for nurses to develop relationships with co-workers and patients. In the local organization, the practice problem for this doctoral project is a perceived low level of self-awareness in nursing. This Doctor of Nursing project aimed to determine if an educational intervention focused on self-awareness and the benefit of self-awareness increased knowledge among nurses working on a medical-surgical unit. A comprehensive literature review of peer-reviewed evidence provided evidence to support this project. A total of 26 individuals (N = 26) participated in the educational intervention. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of the participants (n = 23) were female, and …
Improving The Care Of Neonates With Hyperbilirubinemia, Kellie Busse Kainer
Improving The Care Of Neonates With Hyperbilirubinemia, Kellie Busse Kainer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractProviders at a community-based pediatric hospital in the southern region of the United States have traditionally transferred otherwise healthy neonates with hyperbilirubinemia requiring inpatient treatment to a tertiary care facility. The question addressed was whether the implementation of an evidence-based, organizational protocol increases the quality and decreases the cost of caring for neonates with hyperbilirubinemia in the community-based, pediatric acute care hospital. The main goal of the organization’s quality improvement (QI) project was to facilitate the provision of high-quality, cost-effective care to neonates with hyperbilirubinemia using an evidence-based approach as evidenced by a reduction in the number of neonates with …
Community Circles In Response To Restorative Justice Research And Critique, Hannah Edber
Community Circles In Response To Restorative Justice Research And Critique, Hannah Edber
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Zero-tolerance discipline in schools has resulted in disproportionate referrals, suspensions, and expulsions for Black students, students with disabilities, and low-income students of color. Restorative Justice (RJ) seeks to intervene in these patterns by emphasizing community interconnectedness and a discourse of harm, accountability, and repair. Although RJ has been shown to increase school connectedness and decrease suspensions and expulsions, teachers and students using RJ (as a response to discipline issues) report varying degrees of satisfaction with the framework. Frustrations can include limited time and limited depth of conversations with students who have caused harm, so that root causes of behavior are …
Human Development And Macroeconomic Shocks In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Risikat O.S. Dauda, Onyebuchi Iwegbu
Human Development And Macroeconomic Shocks In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Risikat O.S. Dauda, Onyebuchi Iwegbu
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This paper explores how human development responds to selected macroeconomic shocks in Nigeria. The study employed the Sen’s capabilities approach as the analytical approach and posited that the level of education, health status, quality of investment, technology, and government fiscal and monetary policies are plausible determinants of human development. We used the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) to estimate the responses of such selected shocks, which are inflation, interest rate, government capital expenditure, exchange rate, current account balance, and savings shocks. The Forecast Error Variance Decomposition (FEVD) and the Impulse Response (IR) showed that a fiscal policy shock is the major …
A Recovery Pathway After Covid-19 Teacher Burnout, Laura Sokal, Lesley Eblie Trudel
A Recovery Pathway After Covid-19 Teacher Burnout, Laura Sokal, Lesley Eblie Trudel
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Burnout in the helping professions, including teaching, has been well documented for over fifty years and has been captured within two seminal models offered by Maslach and her colleagues. For this study we interviewed 22 teachers bi-weekly to determine whether these models captured their COVID-19 pandemic work experiences during the 2020–2021 school year. Only one teacher, however, left work on a medical leave and then returned to work after burning out, and therefore provided a case study of the processes of both teacher burnout and recovery under pandemic conditions. The existing models of burnout were upheld as salient in understanding …

Leadership Skill Development In Master’S-Level Counselor Education, Charity A. Godfrey, Richard J. Cicchetti, Craig R. Blum, Gary Michael Szirony, Tamara Harris
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Student leadership identity is fast becoming one of the most critical challenges educational institutions face today. However, mental health counselors may be limited in the amount of education and training received as they become leaders in the field. There is currently no known mandate at the master’s level for leadership embedded within the counseling curriculum in the educational environment, although research suggests otherwise. The purpose of this correlational predictive empirical study was to investigate leadership identity characteristics as measured by the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale, Revision 2 (SLRS-R2), moderated by demographic factors. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine outcome …
An Investigation Of Spirituality In Person-Centered Planning For Adults With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Holly F. Pedersen, Jolynn Webster
An Investigation Of Spirituality In Person-Centered Planning For Adults With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Holly F. Pedersen, Jolynn Webster
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
While research identifies spirituality and inclusion in a community of faith as key factors contributing to quality of life for many individuals in our society, people with disabilities are often not able to access this aspect of everyday life if they wish. To change this, four groups must come together: (1) individuals with disabilities; (2) faith communities; (3) families of people with disabilities; and (4) support service providers. Current research describes the efforts of faith communities and people with disabilities and their families relative to spiritual inclusion; however, little is known about how support service systems are addressing this topic. …

Results: Using structural equation modelling, we showed that perceptions of social support were associated with a higher use of positive coping and a lower use of …
Non-Governmental Organization/Non-Profit Organization Impact On Education Policy In Ghana, Sarah Ayikai Okine
Non-Governmental Organization/Non-Profit Organization Impact On Education Policy In Ghana, Sarah Ayikai Okine
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Non-Governmental Organizations/Nonprofit Organizations (NGOs/NPOs) are progressively becoming an essential source for government agencies in education worldwide. Developing countries such as Ghana have opened the way through regulations and policies for NGOs/NPOs to contribute to the educational system. Nevertheless, perceived threats and confrontations hinder their ability to support the Ministry of Education (MoE) and partner leaders to fulfill their duties in assisting the government in realizing comprehensive universal primary education. This qualitative case study responded to stakeholders’ perceptions of NGOs/NPOs influence on Ghana’s educational system to better comprehend the dynamic and power of NGOs/NPOs on education in Ghana’s rural communities. The …

Strategies For Creating Inclusive Learning Environments Through A Social Justice Lens, Beverly Araujo Dawson, Whitney Kilgore, Renee M. Rawcliffe
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Culturally situated and cross-cultural approaches to instructional design and research have become increasingly important in higher education, particularly in online learning environments. As higher education becomes increasingly racially and ethnically diverse, learning environments must be structured and facilitated to meet the learning needs of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) students. Based on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) and culturally inclusive pedagogy, this paper provides an overview of inclusive teaching practices and the necessity to take a holistic approach to online teaching with BIPOC students. This paper provides an overview of key instructional design elements to achieve equity-minded instructional design.
Association Between Therapeutic Interventions And Quality Of Life In People With Autism, Taline Movsessian, Tolulope A. Osoba
Association Between Therapeutic Interventions And Quality Of Life In People With Autism, Taline Movsessian, Tolulope A. Osoba
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research exploring the association of autism interventions with the quality of life (QoL) of adults with autism spectrum disorders was scarce. Although a multitude of interventions are used to target a specific challenge facing the individual with autism, their correlation with achieving a better QoL is largely unknown. We conducted a cross-sectional, correlational survey study to determine the association between seven interventions—behavioral, social, mental health, daily living skills (DLS), vocational, mindfulness, and medications—and the QoL of adults 18 years and older with autism with no intellectual disability (ID) living in Canada. A national sample of 182 autistic adults or proxy …

Helping Responses By Indirect Bystanders Of Coercive Sexual Harassment In Academia: Friendship Status With Source Of Information, Donna M. L. Heretick, Inna Learn, Jessica M. Holmes
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Coercive sexual harassment (CSH) by faculty is a risk factor for women in higher education. Bystander intervention and support for a victim are critical. Social networks can influence peers’ social reactions to victims of sexual violations. This is the first study to explore the responses of peers who learn about CSH of a peer indirectly, thus becoming indirect bystanders. In this scenario, a peer classmate learns of CSH of a classmate from another classmate who witnessed the CSH. The 181 participants (52.8% female) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions where a written vignette described an interaction between the …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The Generation Myth by Bobby Duffy, Basic Books, 2021, ISBN 9781541620308, 288 pages.
Bobby Duffy wrote The Generation Myth as a contribution to the topic of the similarities and differences among the different generational groups. The aim of this review was to direct attention to Duffy’s clear-headed framework, which cuts through the doom and gloom analyses of amplified generational differences and the associated threat of a looming generational war. The review points to the extensive research, rational assessments, and refreshing insights on the topic that the author packs into 288 pages. The book’s contents are relevant to researchers, pundits, and …
Introducing Interdisciplinary Curricula Into Conservation Biology: Exploring Changes In Students’ Perceived Proenvironmental Attitudes And Behaviors, Jasmine Janes, Lindsay J. Mccunn
Introducing Interdisciplinary Curricula Into Conservation Biology: Exploring Changes In Students’ Perceived Proenvironmental Attitudes And Behaviors, Jasmine Janes, Lindsay J. Mccunn
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Today, conserving the natural environment is paramount. Educators have been striving to develop pedagogical approaches that facilitate greater engagement in conservation behaviors. However, many of these reforms have been targeted at an institutional level, without necessarily testing whether changes in proenvironmental perceptions, attitudes, or behaviors occur for students. This step seems important when developing conservation biology courses that provide well-rounded education that may better prepare students for future challenges in biodiverse conservation contexts. Our objective was to assess the proenvironmental attitudes and conservation values of undergraduate students enrolled in an undergraduate conservation biology course before and after instruction to determine …

Methods: The qualitative program evaluation approach, using the standards of utility, feasibility, accuracy, and propriety of a given program, inspired the design of the immediate appraisal of the workshops delivered within a Canadian school of nursing located …
The Impact Of Gender Identity, Medical Transition, And Other Substances On Marijuana Use For Transgender Adults, Alex Redcay, Elisabeth Counselman Carpenter, Kevin Lally
The Impact Of Gender Identity, Medical Transition, And Other Substances On Marijuana Use For Transgender Adults, Alex Redcay, Elisabeth Counselman Carpenter, Kevin Lally
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Transgender individuals have been identified as having greater rates of substance use. Previous research often focused on the intersection of HIV risk and substance use on specific age ranges or on how minority stress and discrimination relate to substance use. Using data from the 2015 United States Transgender Survey, our study is one of the first to explore the relationship among gender identity, age, the role of medical transition, and the use of marijuana within the transgender community. A deeper understanding of the relationship of these variables will benefit the transgender community by allowing for more thorough and accurate assessment …

Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Marietta, G., & Marietta, S. (2020). Rural education in America: What works for our students, teachers, and communities. Harvard Education Press.
This review evaluates Geoff and Sky Marietta’s book, Rural Education in America: What Works for Our Students, Teachers, and Communities. As parents, community members, practitioners, and academics, the writers have a unique perspective on rural education. In this book, they seek to dispel the myth of the rural monolith of white poverty and social conservatism, arguing that rural communities and their challenges are far more complex and diverse than is presently reflected in the literature. This review …

Poverty Implications Of Covid-19 And Government Social Protection Programmes In Nigeria, Adeponle Adeoye, John Lola Okunola, Sunday Fakunle
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The sole objective of this paper was to investigate the poverty implications of COVID-19 on Nigerians, relative to the effectiveness of the government’s social protection programs in mitigating the socioeconomic strain caused by the pandemic. The paper used documentary analysis to assess the impact of COVID-19 on Nigerians’ socioeconomic lives and the government’s policy response to the situation. The review found that COVID-19 exacerbated the existing poverty in Nigeria, and most of the government policy programs were not effective in mitigating the effects. We concluded that government policy responses to the socioeconomic strain caused by the pandemic were ineffective due …
Language Style Matching In Older Couples And Marital Satisfaction, Benjamin Burke, Amy Rauer
Language Style Matching In Older Couples And Marital Satisfaction, Benjamin Burke, Amy Rauer
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research on marital communication has focused on nonverbal behaviors (e.g., affect), leaving specific word use relatively unexplored. Recent work, however, suggests that similarity in function words (e.g., articles) may be associated with relational functioning in younger couples. We explored if this language style matching (LSM) also occurred in more established relationships and whether it was related to marital satisfaction within a sample of 64 older adult married couples. Using a dyadic, two-wave, observational research design, our results suggest that LSM is highly prevalent in older couples’ conversations across three different tasks (reminiscence, problem solving, and health support). Only LSM during …
Beating The Employment Challenges: How Unemployed Youths Generate Income For Their Households, Gai Chol Paul
Beating The Employment Challenges: How Unemployed Youths Generate Income For Their Households, Gai Chol Paul
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Youth unemployment remains a global threat to the achievement of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. It impedes the fight to end poverty in all its forms, limits opportunities to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and undermines a country’s ability to reduce inequalities. In Sub-Saharan African nations, the unemployment rate is particularly high because the environment is prone to volatility caused by poor governance, chronic conflicts, and corruption. Unemployed graduates who lack effective strategies risk failing to generate income for themselves and their families. Thus, my purpose in this qualitative multiple case study, which was grounded in achievement motivation …
