Law Enforcement Leaders’ Perceptions Of The Attributes Of Emotional Intelligence, Gordon A. Broussard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAlthough there have been numerous studies conducted on emotional intelligence and effective leadership, there is a need for increased emotional intelligence among law enforcement leaders. This study aimed at determining how law enforcement leaders perceive the importance of emotional intelligence attributes when leading their organization. A phenomenological qualitative study was used with purposive and snowball sampling of 12 participants who held senior leadership positions for over five years as chiefs and sheriffs throughout the United States. Semistructured interviews were conducted to determine participants’ perceptions of the importance of the four attributes of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship …
Experiences Of Older Adults With Hiv/Aids Enrolled In Case Management Programs In Northwest Indiana, Antoinette Cardenas
Experiences Of Older Adults With Hiv/Aids Enrolled In Case Management Programs In Northwest Indiana, Antoinette Cardenas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn 2016, more than half of those infected with HIV/AIDS were age 50 years or older. Since the introduction of antiretroviral therapy, the survival rate of HIV patients has been on the rise with a predicted increase by 2030, but this has also contributed to early onset of comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and kidney failure. The purpose of this generic qualitative study, driven by ecological systems theory, was to explore the experiences of older adults (age 50 and older) with HIV/AIDS who were enrolled in case management programs in Northwest Indiana. Data were collected from semi structured interviews …
Student Perspective Of Alternative Education Characteristics Implemented By Public School Social Workers, Jennifer M. Fields
Student Perspective Of Alternative Education Characteristics Implemented By Public School Social Workers, Jennifer M. Fields
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public schools are facing increased challenges to address the needs of students with significant behavioral issues. In response, Alternative education (AE) programs are used to reengage students in learning and enhance personal development, through a combination of academic and therapeutic strategies. AE placement is intended to be short-term, with the goal of returning students to public school. However, the differences between these two settings make it difficult for students to sustain achievements made in AE upon reentry. The purpose of this qualitative research was to use the student perspective to identify the social-emotional characteristics of AE that have influenced change, …
Post-School Transition Experiences Of Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Christine Marie Lindh
Post-School Transition Experiences Of Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Christine Marie Lindh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The post-school transition phenomenon has been examined using educational and vocational viewpoints. However, despite evidence-based practices and policies, individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) often experience unfavorable outcomes. This population needs a voice in existing literature because it tends to be aggregated with other participant groups. This qualitative study involved understanding how young adults with mild to moderate ID described their lived experiences regarding the post-school transition to adulthood, specifically in terms of their personal expectations of employment and functional independence. The social cognitive career theory was used to explore individual and environmental factors related to adulthood transitions. Semi-structured interviews were …

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Punitive Force In Solitary Confinement, Megan Crista Oberholtzer
Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Punitive Force In Solitary Confinement, Megan Crista Oberholtzer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Solitary confinement in United States prisons is a common practice influenced by legal and human rights discussions. Physical conditions of the prison environment can cause somatic and psychological distress among correctional officers. The research problem is how lived experiences of solitary confinement correctional officers may influence punitive force perceptions. A positive outcome for inmates may be influenced by correctional officers who are unbiased in confinement, interventions, and treatment management. Positive inmate outcomes also rely on institutional functions. The purpose was to explore correctional officers’ lived experiences and perspectives. The supporting theoretical framework is Weiner’s attribution theory. The research question involved …

African American Experiences Of Racism When Operating A Small Business, Sheliza Thompson
African American Experiences Of Racism When Operating A Small Business, Sheliza Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was the racism that African Americans experienced when operating a small business. African Americans are more likely to start a business than members of other minority groups. However, African Americans are also less likely to succeed. Low success rates relate to the racial inequities that contribute to systemic racism. The racism that African Americans experience is deeply rooted in societal constructs that have been ingrained for many years. General racism and systemic racism are societal constructs that work against the socioeconomic status of African Americans and their communities. The purpose of this phenomenological study …

Prevention Of Eviction And Severe Housing Crisis, Kayla Hunter
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Texas has the fifth highest rate of people experiencing homelessness in the United States. Many individuals are facing homelessness, faced eviction first causing them to be homeless. New graduate nurses often lack adequate clinical judgment skills to practice competent nursing care, which may result in increased risk of committing practice errors that threaten patient safety. To mitigate errors in patient safety, industry leaders have called for nursing program improvements in preparation of nursing students’ clinical judgement as they transition to professional practice. Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Faculty Experiences With Online Course Design, Ashley Burton
Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Faculty Experiences With Online Course Design, Ashley Burton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Quality online course design requires course designers to make carefully informed decisions based on current resources and considerations for the learner. Some faculty at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) design online learning without the assistance of instructional designers, training, or a technological infrastructure that supports online learning. To date, there is a shortage of scholarly research about how HBCU faculty design online courses and what supports or barriers exist for them. Thus, this basic qualitative research study aimed to understand faculty’s online course design experiences at HBCUs. Instructional design, adult learning theory, and the HBCU context formed the conceptual …

The participants included three senior leaders in a nonprofit located in the northeastern region of the United States who have indirectly or directly implemented succession planning strategies. This Doctor of Nursing practice project was a quality improvement (QI) initiative that addressed the gap in practice regarding RN care managers who were not consistently performing care coordination as outlined by the office of community care at the project site. The purpose of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness that an educational intervention had on the RN care managers’ abilities to perform care coordination. The care coordination model (CCM) served as the project framework because it provides a systematic …

Lived Experiences Of College-Educated African American Males During Police Interactions In Central Kentucky, Lawerence Eric Charles
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent high-profile incidents involving police interaction with Black citizens have increased community outrage and racial divisions between police and African Americans. Despite previous research on relations between African Americans and police, little literature has focused on the lived experiences of college-educated African American males when interacting with police. In the study 12 participants were interviewed. The analytical approach was grounded theory, which identified seven themes that most of the men had in common. One shared lived experience expressed the need for collaborative and inclusive policies that prevent bias, police brutality, and wrongful arrest and detention of the African American community. …

AbstractDischarge instructions are a valuable component of patient education as they can influence outcomes post-discharge, leading to positive social change through improved morbidity and mortality. The use of teach-back education by registered nurses is a best practice that assures understanding of discharge instructions. The purpose of this project was to develop, deliver, and evaluate a program to educate staff on the best practice of teach-back to effectively deliver patient education. The logic model helped guide and develop the stages of the project …
