Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of the study was to investigate the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among African immigrants and African Americans born in the United States to identify differences and similarities in their impact and prevalence. Variables considered as potential differentiators included alcohol consumption, income, educational levels, and smoking habits, age, and gender. The health belief model served as the theoretical framework. Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2016, logistic regression analyses were used to test for significant factors affecting T2DM prevalence in these groups. Splitting Attraction: A Phenomenological Study Of Coming Out With Discordant Sexual And Romantic Orientations Among Adults, Kayla Mangen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In discussions of attraction, most assume that one term applies to both sexual and romantic attraction and thus is all that one needs. However, for a group of individuals within the LGBTQ+ population, attraction varies between romantic and sexual, and therefore these individuals require multiple terms to accurately express their identities. Coming out is the process by which an individual expresses their identity both to themselves and to others. While much is known about this process, little is known about how identifying with different, or discordant, sexual and romantic orientations affects this process. The purpose of this phenomenological study was …

Stress And Coping Experienced By Mothers With Autoimmune Diseases While Parenting Children With Autism, Christine Marie Dillon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The number of individuals diagnosed with autoimmune diseases (AD) continues to rise, with the majority being women of childbearing age. There has been a concurrent increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Mothers of children with ASD are often the primary caretaker for their children, and report decreased quality of life and increased behavioral health concerns. AD and ASD have been studied separately through a quantitative lens, with findings demonstrating similarities between the two regarding potential etiology. Teachers' Experience Serving Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders In Distance Learning, Mireya Escalante Torres
Teachers' Experience Serving Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders In Distance Learning, Mireya Escalante Torres
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the COVID-19 pandemic, stay-at-home orders forced millions of students attending schools in the United States to shift to distance learning. As pandemic restrictions lifted and schools reopened, an emerging trend was observed: many parents of children with disabilities chose to continue distance learning. This decision gains significance in the context of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs) who are at a higher risk of disengagement from school. Educators need to understand how to address social, emotional, and behavioral needs within online learning frameworks. However, increasing engagement for students with EBDs in distance learning has not been well-researched. Drawing …

Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over half of Idaho’s incoming kindergarteners lack the necessary school readiness skills. The environment in which the child lives and grows, which includes the child’s parents, determines the child’s readiness for school. This study addressed Idaho parents’ roles in preparing their preschool-aged child for kindergarten, and their current ability to access resources and information on school readiness. The study was grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which provided a framework for the influence of parents on a child’s school readiness outcomes based on the idea that a person’s behavior evolves based on the relationship between the person and their environment. …

The Lived Experience Of Parents With Newborns In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu): A Heuristic Inquiry, Abigail Bilyk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parents with newborns who require medical care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) immediately following birth are at an increased risk of experiencing psychological distress. While quantitative research studies have determined that a NICU admission can have detrimental effects on parents, a better understanding of the lived experience for both mothers and fathers is necessary to ensure adequacy in the standard of care given to parents while their newborn is admitted to the NICU. The phenomenon has not previously been explored using the phenomenological approach of heuristic inquiry. Constructivism, social constructivism, and the transactional model of stress and coping …

Impactful Digital Technology Coaches: Identifying Their Characteristics And Competencies While Delineating Their Role, Tiffany L. Gallagher, Catherine Susin, Arlene Grierson
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Digital technology coaches (DTCs) often support teachers with integrating technology into their classroom and instructional program, as well as provide ongoing staff development. To be effective, coaches tend to have specific characteristics for instructional coaching and competencies for educational coaching. We investigated if these characteristics and competencies applied to effective DTCs while we observed their proficiency with technology, their interactions with other educators, and the way they provide support for the teacher-professional learning (PL) process. Three DTCs led over 80 K–12 teachers from the same school district in classroom coaching sessions, collaborative planning meetings, PL sessions, and conference presentations. In …
