Prediabetes affects over 4 million people in New York State and increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Prior research identified risk factors such as poor diet, inactivity, obesity, hypertension, and smoking; but no studies examined these collectively or assessed their interactions. This quantitative, cross-sectional study analyzed a sample of 289 non-institutionalized adults aged 18 or older with landline or cellular phone, from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The study examined relationships between prediabetes and 16 factors in five categories: demographic (age, race, sex, education), socioeconomic (income, employment), behavioral (fruit intake, vegetable intake, physical activity, smoking), physiological (hypertension, BMI), …

The problem investigated in this study was the high attrition rate for special education teachers. Attrition rates have been associated with a variety of adverse outcomes, including heavy workloads, behavior problems, reduced student achievement, and increased levels of stress. High attrition rates also create a financial burden on school districts. Using Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory as the conceptual framework, this qualitative study aimed to identify job-related factors that contribute to special education teachers leaving the profession. The research question guiding this study identified the factors that cause special education teachers to leave the profession. Data were collected by interviewing 12 current …

Executive Summary: Quality Improvement Initiative Retrospective Program Evaluation Of Sms Reminder System In Decreasing Outpatient Mental Health Clinic No-Show Rates, Jordan Rogers

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project presents an organizational quality improvement initiative implementing a text message reminder system to decrease appointment no-show rates in the outpatient mental health clinic. The project was developed based on the high rate of appointment no-shows at the DNP project site. Appointment no-shows are costly to both clinics and patients. Clinics experience decreased revenue and efficiency, and patient outcomes can be compromised. The project evaluated whether text message reminders sent 24 hours before a scheduled appointment time decreased no-show rates by at least 10%. Preimplementation data were collected for months October, November, and December, …

Complementary Self-Care Therapies To Self-Manage Endometriosis In Association With Health-Related Quality Of Life, Sarah Cummins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a lack of understanding within the psychological and medical communities on the extent to which endometriosis impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with endometriosis (PWE). This population is understudied in relation to the effects of endometriosis on HRQoL, the various methods used to treat and cope with endometriosis-related symptoms, the influence of self-managing endometriosis on PWE’s HRQoL, or the HRQoL outcomes associated with using nontraditional methods to self-manage endometriosis. As such, there is a lack of knowledge on the extent to which the use of various types of complementary self-care therapies to self-manage endometriosis is …

Enhancing Provider Knowledge With Phq-9 Education, Laurette Abunaw Apr 2025

Enhancing Provider Knowledge With Phq-9 Education, Laurette Abunaw

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Depression represents a significant public health concern that often remains undiagnosed or untreated, primarily due to insufficient systematic screening in primary care settings. The lack of standardized screening tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) elevates patient risks, increasing symptom severity, increasing suicide rates, and delaying interventions. Research studies show that a significant number of individuals with depression go untreated for long durations, with primary care settings recognizing only a small percentage of cases. The PHQ-9 is an effective tool for assessing and monitoring depression in a primary care setting, leading to early detection of symptom severity. Clinical practice …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This project was a staff education initiative designed to address critical knowledge gaps among nursing staff regarding the safe administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The identified practice problem was insufficient knowledge in areas such as SSRI pharmacology, proper dosages, administration techniques, and management of interactions and side effects. Given the importance of safe SSRI administration in preventing medication errors and optimizing patient outcomes, this gap was significant in nursing practice. The primary project question focused on a structured educational intervention improving nursing staff knowledge of SSRIs by a minimum of 20% change. The educational PowerPoint for the project …

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of AA when accessing culturally appropriate mental health services, using qualitative, phenomenological research methods. The theoretical framework for this investigation was based on social stress theory, which explored individual experiences and community change. Six AA males and females, from Gregg County, Texas, and the Louisiana …

Assessing The Predictability Of Sexual Homicide Subtypes In Serial Homicide Offenders Using Childhood Abuse And The Macdonald Triad, Kevin Dionne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prior research established a positive correlation between childhood abuse and sexually motivated murders, and childhood abuse is considered a risk factor for serial murder, especially for sexually motivated serial murder. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess whether a predictive relationship exists between childhood abuse types (physical, sexual, and psychological) and MacDonald triad behaviors (enuresis, fire setting, and animal cruelty) in predicting sexual homicide subtypes (sexualized, grievance, and rape murder) in a sample of male serial sexual homicide offenders. The subtypes were derived from the Higgs, Carter, Tully, and Browne systematic review. The theoretical lenses applied in the …

Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder: Perspectives Of Patients In Long-Term Recovery, Robert Florian

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The contemporary landscape of substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder, presents a complex and pressing public health concern, marked by escalating rates of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Although extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of interventions for opioid use disorder, a notable research gap exists concerning the perspectives of individuals in long-term recovery (defined as exceeding 2 years). Specifically, how these individuals view pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches remains largely unexplored in the existing literature. Grounded in the biopsychosocial model, this study investigates patients’ perceptions of medication-assisted treatment and abstinence-based therapies. Purposive sampling was utilized, and participants …
