Predictive Factors Of Compassion Fatigue Among Firefighters, Teresa Michelle Robinson
Predictive Factors Of Compassion Fatigue Among Firefighters, Teresa Michelle Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few existing studies have examined compassion fatigue among emergency responders even though firefighters and emergency medical service (EMS) professionals have repetitive direct exposure to traumatic events. This study focused on identifying predictor variables for the development of compassion fatigue in firefighters. Karasek's demand-control model, a commonly used work stress model, was the study's theoretical framework as it focuses on specific construct interactions that predict employee well-being. Accordingly, this correlational study examined the predictive nature of EMS license level, years of service, and personality type on the development of compassion fatigue in career firefighters. Data collection occurred with surveys incorporating the …

An Integrative Review Focusing On Accuracy And Reliability Of Clinical Thermometers, Julie Black Black
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Technological advances in clinical thermometers have resulted in a variety of minimally invasive devices that give rapid results but may not have the accuracy necessary for use in acutely ill adults. Inaccurate temperatures can result in missed opportunities for the early identification and treatment of infection and sepsis. Following the methodology outlined by Whittemore and Knafl, the purpose of this project was to conduct an integrative review of the research on the accuracy of clinical thermometers used for acutely ill adults. The evidence was categorized using the Hierarchy of Evidence for Interventional Studies, and the quality of the studies was …

Social Demography Of Health Seeking Experiences Among Transgender African Americans, Alicia Cutrice Fritz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Access to and receipt of health care is an essential human right; however, transgender people often have negative health seeking experiences that give way to the many health disparities seen in the transgender community. Using the social ecological model, this study determined, through multiple logistic regressions, that correlations existed between socioeconomic, health behaviors, and sociocultural variables and 6 measures of health seeking experiences among transgender African Americans. Secondary data from the 2010 National Transgender Discrimination Survey were used, yielding a sample size of 253 transgender African Americans. Those in the African American transgender community at most risk for negative health …

Evaluation Of Low Immunization Coverage Among The Amish Population In Rural Ohio, Christine Marie Kettunen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Amish communities have persistently low childhood immunization rates. Prior to this study, reasons for low rates had not been clearly identified. Researchers have speculated that access to health care, religious factors, and fear might be reasons that Amish parents refuse childhood immunizations, but more empirical evidence was warranted. The purpose of this study was to gather that empirical evidence regarding the knowledge, attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of Amish parents residing in Ashtabula County Ohio, an additional purpose was to examine how these factors influence timely immunizations of Amish children. The theoretical framework was the PEN-3-Cultural Model, focusing on cultural influences, beliefs, …

How Grant Recipients Can Satisfy Compliance Requirements For U.S. Federal Awards, Thomas Edward Drabczyk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Improper grants payments stemming from weaknesses in business processes have been a focus of the U.S. president, Congress, and federal and state governments since 2009. Researchers have demonstrated that the internal control weakness at the federal, state, and local government level has contributed to the problem of compliance. The Office of Management and Budget issued federal rules effective in December 2014 to address the problem of federal award compliance. Despite these measures, there is a gap in the literature on strategies for recipients of federal grants to meet compliance requirements. The purpose of the qualitative descriptive study was to explore …

African American Entrepreneurial Sustainability, Edward Turner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans are among the fastest growing entrepreneurial minority group in the United States, but they continue to struggle with sustaining these new business ventures. Evidence suggests that African American business entrepreneurs experience an increased failure rate with a 4-year business survival rate of 39%. Reducing the failure rate would significantly add to the U.S. economy (an estimated $2.5 trillion) and create nearly 12 million more jobs. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies and behaviors of an award-winning African American entrepreneur in Miami Dade County who has remained in business over 20 years. The …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Supervising Child Protection Social Workers, Kecia Rachel Freeman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social workers in child protective services often handle hundreds of cases regarding children traumatized by abuse and/or neglect. In time, social workers' experiences can become emotionally and psychologically challenging. A problem for supervising child protection social workers (SCPSWs) is that they might experience the same challenges; however, there was no research that described the lived experiences of SCPSWs. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of SCPSWs. Conceptually, constructivist self-development theory (CSDT) provided the framework for understanding how SCPSWs managed their lived experiences and the issues related to them. Ten SCPSWs volunteered their time for face-to-face interviews and provided data …
