Elementary Music Teachers' Perceptions Of The Effect Of Budget Reductions On Music Education, Jimmy Michel
Elementary Music Teachers' Perceptions Of The Effect Of Budget Reductions On Music Education, Jimmy Michel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since 2007, many U.S. music education programs have been negatively affected by budget reductions at the local, state, and national levels. Although researchers have studied the effect of budget reductions on music education, they have not widely examined the perspectives of teachers who have experienced these reductions. The purpose of this study was to explore elementary music teachers' personal and professional experiences with budget reductions, and the perceptions of how their programs, students, schools, and communities have been affected by the budget reductions. The philosophies of Kodaly and Richards served as a conceptual framework for this qualitative case study. The …
Adaptive Behavior Assessment Of Ethnically Different Children Referred For Special Education Services, Kelly C. Moynahan
Adaptive Behavior Assessment Of Ethnically Different Children Referred For Special Education Services, Kelly C. Moynahan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 6 children are diagnosed with a developmental disability or with developmental delays, which are associated with impairments in physical, language, cognitive, and/or adaptive behaviors. To fill a gap in the literature, the adaptive profile of young children initially served as developmentally delayed (DD) were analyzed to explore adaptive differences between different ethnicities and placement settings of children at the time of the initial referral prior to DD assessment. Archival data included 333 preschool aged children. The independent variables of eligibility status (DD or not DD eligible), ethnicity (White, …
A Comparison Of Social Disconnectedness And Perceived Isolation In Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Women And Hearing Women, Mellissa Perry
A Comparison Of Social Disconnectedness And Perceived Isolation In Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Women And Hearing Women, Mellissa Perry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has concluded that hearing loss is related to psychological risk factors in a person that could potentially increase feelings of disconnect or isolation. However, the gap in literature and lack of knowledge regarding social disconnectedness and perceived isolation specifically for deaf/hard of hearing women makes it difficult for clinicians to develop appropriate programs to assist this population. The purpose of this study was to contribute information regarding the effects of hearing loss on social disconnectedness and perceived isolation to help clinicians create proper treatment plans to better assist the deaf/hard of hearing with negative feelings (e.g., loneliness, depression) …
The Use Of Scorecards To Improve Documentation Of Obstetrical Blood Loss, Marilyn Cejka Steinberg
The Use Of Scorecards To Improve Documentation Of Obstetrical Blood Loss, Marilyn Cejka Steinberg
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obstetric hemorrhage is one of the most common causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. The measurement of quantitative blood loss (QBL) at delivery prevents clinicians from failing to recognize hemorrhage in healthy obstetric patients who initially compensate for excessive blood loss. The purpose of this project was to improve the compliance of labor and delivery nurses in a community hospital with consistent QBL measurement. Key theories that formed the basis for the project were Lewin's theory of planned change and homeostasis. The project question addressed was: Is the use of weekly scorecards to provide feedback to nurses with both blinded …
Cultural And Environmental Determinants Of Dental Discoloration Among School-Aged Children In Nigeria, Ogbudu Gabriel Ada
Cultural And Environmental Determinants Of Dental Discoloration Among School-Aged Children In Nigeria, Ogbudu Gabriel Ada
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Dental discoloration from fluorosis is a global public health problem. In Nigeria, 11.4% of the population is impacted by this disorder. Dental discoloration is caused by successive exposures to high fluoride concentrations during tooth development in utero and it is linked to the development of a variety of psychological and physiological problems, from dental aesthetics to a reduction in intelligence and skeletal changes. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to examine the cultural and environmental determinants of dental fluorosis in children in a rural community in Nigeria. A multilevel theoretical model was used to develop possible fluoride exposure …

Perceptions Of Preconception Health And Prenatal Care By Young Adult Women And Men At Risk For Unintended Pregnancies, Broderick Crawford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Among young adults at risk for unintended pregnancies, preconception health and prenatal care programs aimed at positive birth outcomes remain unaddressed. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of young adults in terms of their willingness to use preconception health and prenatal care as a means for increasing both positive birth outcomes and overall health. All study participants met the following criteria: (a) young adult man or woman, (b) age 18 to 25, (c) at risk for unintended pregnancies, (d) sexually active, (e) single or in cohabiting partnerships, and (f) living in the greater Los …
Palliative Care Integration In The Intensive Care Unit, Jennifer Goldsborough
Palliative Care Integration In The Intensive Care Unit, Jennifer Goldsborough
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Palliative health care is offered to any patient experiencing a life limiting or life changing illness. The palliative approach includes goals of care, expert symptom management, and advance care planning in order to reduce patient suffering. Complex care can be provided by palliative care specialists while primary palliative care can be given by educated staff nurses. However, according to the literature, intensive care unit (ICU) nurses have demonstrated a lack of knowledge in the provision of primary care as well as experiencing moral distress from that lack of knowledge. In this doctor of nursing practice staff education project, the problem …

Decentralization Of Local Government And Rural Development In Rivers State, Nigeria, Eddy B. Kaka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Rural communities in Rivers State, Nigeria are fraught with underdevelopment crises despite the accrual of wealth from oil and gas. Community Development Committees (CDCs) are established by the Rivers State government in each town and village to facilitate community development. However, the CDCs have failed to generate substantive development in rural communities. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the perceptions of local stakeholders as to the factors that have contributed to this policy failure. Benet's theory of polarities of democracy was used in this study. Twenty-two participants in the Khana region of Rivers State were interviewed …
Factors Predicting Academic Achievement Among Hispanic Community College Students, Lisa Marcelino
Factors Predicting Academic Achievement Among Hispanic Community College Students, Lisa Marcelino
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hispanic college students are more at risk of poor academic performance and dropping out than any other racial group. The Hispanic college population continues to grow, yet rates of retention and achievement for this group continue to decline. Previous research on Hispanic college students has examined factors that contribute to underachievement and declining graduation rates, but they are limited to students attending 4-year institutions. This study examined if grade point averages (GPAs) were affected by levels of self-efficacy, resiliency, and sensation seeking. Bandura's self-efficacy and social cognitive theories along with Zuckerman and Kuhlman's theory of sensation-seeking were the theoretical frameworks …
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Preimplantation Genetic Screening, William Andrew Moye
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Preimplantation Genetic Screening, William Andrew Moye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is used to help infertile couples achieve a live birth. Clinical studies have suggested that multiple, consecutive cycles of IVF can increase live birth rate significantly. Others have documented improved live birth rates from the use of new laboratory techniques for preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). This genetic screening technique seeks to determine the ploidy of the embryo prior to implantation into the woman. To date, no study has examined the cost-effectiveness of using IVF in conjunction with PGS compared to that of IVF alone for 3 consecutive cycles in achieving a live birth. This study compared …

Trauma And Juvenile Justice In Carson City, Nevada, Ali M
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Nevada State Juvenile Justice and School systems do not currently screen or treat juveniles for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Left untreated, PTSD may contribute to behaviors that can lead to engagement with the juvenile justice system and contribute to high rates of recidivism and possible future engagement with the adult justice system. Using Erickson's theory of psychological development as the foundation, the purpose of this case study was to explore whether, from the perspectives of key stakeholders whether interventions and prevention services for juvenile justice clients in Carson City met the needs of youthful offenders also diagnosed with PTSD. …
Colorectal Cancer Awareness And Screening Guideline For African American Populations, Keyna Omenukor
Colorectal Cancer Awareness And Screening Guideline For African American Populations, Keyna Omenukor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Colorectal cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Early screening
provides the best prospects for preventing the morbidity and mortality associated with the
disease. Nurses have the duty to promote health and prevent diseases. However, low rates
of colorectal cancer screening continue to be reported, especially among African
Americans who continue to suffer disproportionately from the disease. There is a need for
a culturally-sensitive clinical practice guideline that nurses can use to educate patients
appropriately on colorectal cancer. The practice focused question for this project was
designed to explore whether a culturally-sensitive clinical practice guideline to increase
colorectal …
Neighborhood-Level Predictors And Obesity Among African-American Children, Uche Onyeka
Neighborhood-Level Predictors And Obesity Among African-American Children, Uche Onyeka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The steady raise in childhood obesity is a major public health problem nationally and globally. Childhood obesity is primarily caused by an imbalance between caloric intake and caloric expenditure. The increase in childhood obesity rates over the past 3 decades suggested involvement of environmental and behavioral factors in the obesity epidemic. While childhood obesity is considered a public health crisis in the United States, only limited research is available about the potential impact of neighborhood-level factors such as access to healthy food, neighborhood safety, and risk-free outdoor playgrounds. The purpose of this study was to examine if any relationships existed …

The Correlation Between Job Satisfaction And Turnover Intention In Small Business, Jane Ann Reukauf
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover has been responsible for the failure of many small businesses in the United States. Business leaders do not always understand the reasons employees choose to leave an organization. This correlational study, grounded in Herzberg's 2-factor theory, examined the relationship between intrinsic employee job satisfaction, extrinsic employee job satisfaction, and employee turnover intention among employees in small businesses. Participants included 129 employees of a small business in Western New York. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire and Turnover Intention Survey were used to collect the data. The multiple regression analysis significantly predicted extrinsic employee turnover intentions, F(3, 103) = 25.687, p …
Postpartum Hemorrhage Evidenced-Based Registered Nurse Staff Education Project, Jessica Powell
Postpartum Hemorrhage Evidenced-Based Registered Nurse Staff Education Project, Jessica Powell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite medical technology and research advances postpartum hemorrhages (PPH) continue to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for pregnant women, even in developed countries. One possible explanation for PPHs continuing to be a leading cause of maternal death is inconsistent recognition and timely treatment of women experiencing a PPH. This doctor of nursing practice project attempts to improve labor and delivery nurse knowledge through an educational intervention which will contribute to rapid identification and treatment of PPH. Knowledge change was demonstrated though change in pretest and posttest scores. The educational information and process was guided by adult learning …

Relationships Among Vitamin D Deficiency, Metabolic Syndrome, Smoking Behavior, And Physical Activity, Ethan Pham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Aging increases the risk of both vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome. Vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome may be related, although there are mixed findings. Furthermore, literature suggests other factors such as physical fitness activity and smoking behavior are associated with Vitamin D deficiency and the development of metabolic syndrome. A number of studies have documented associations between Vitamin D levels and physical fitness activities, while other studies found correlations between Vitamin D levels, metabolic syndrome, and smoking behavior. However, no previous study has examined the links between physical fitness activity, smoking behavior, Vitamin D levels, and the risks …

Association Between Work-Related Safety And Work-Related Injuries Among Home Health Care Providers, Sania Mohammed Saleh Abdulkhaleq
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Home care nurses (HCNs) have reported a high rate of exposure to work-related injuries (WRIs). Nurses are challenged by the multidimensional problems associated with home care safety. These contextual risk factors increase the physical and social health problems of health care workers and of community suffering as a whole. This quantitative, cross-sectional study was designed to examine the relationship between the organization-related factors (ORFs) and the environment-related factors (ERFs) and their influences on safety behaviors (SBs) and the WRIs of HCNs. The PRECEDE framework was used to guide the study. Self-reported data were obtained from 74 home health care (HHC) …

Health Promoting Behaviors Of Young Adults With Chronic Lyme Disease, Patricia D. Bolivar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lyme disease is the most prevalent arthropod-borne (tick) disease in North America. The disease is more prevalent in some Eastern and Central states than in Western states. The general problem is that, in southern California especially in Los Angeles County, both patients and practitioners fail to recognize the disease, resulting in misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Consequently, the patient may develop the long-term, chronic Lyme disease (CLD). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the impact of CLD on the health-promoting behaviors of ethnically diverse young adults from similar educational and socioeconomic backgrounds based on their lived experiences. The …

Implementing A Smoking Cessation Educational Module For Clinical Staff Members Who Care For Mentally Ill Outpatients, Anthonia Okeani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, cigarette smoking is the main contributor to preventable death in all populations; and, among the mentally ill, the prevalence of smoking is a clinical practice concern. Nearly half of all smokers also have a diagnosis of mental illness compared with 23% of the general population. In an effort to reduce the problem of tobacco use within mentally ill populations, this project sought to create an educational module on smoking cessation for staff in a mental health clinic. The theory of planned behavior was used to guide the project that focused on implementation of a behavior change …
Hand Expression With Lactation Support: Effect On Self-Efficacy And Breastfeeding Duration, Florence Omekara
Hand Expression With Lactation Support: Effect On Self-Efficacy And Breastfeeding Duration, Florence Omekara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Breastfeeding is the best infant feeding method, and breastmilk has many immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect babies against illnesses and diseases. It protects the health of the mother and saves society substantial economic costs, as demonstrated in many studies. Studies show that if 90% of U.S mothers breastfed for 6 months, up to $13 billion in healthcare costs could be saved. Despite the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding, most women stop breastfeeding before 6 months postpartum, which falls short of the recommendations of the World Health Organization, U.S. Surgeon General, and American Academy of Pediatrics. This study explored …

Systematic Review Of The Literature On Why There Is Hospice Underutilization, Maria J Garcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite hospice and palliative care services being available for patients at the end-of-life, it remains an easily accessible health care service which has been mostly underutilized and/or misunderstood. For this project, the practice problem was underutilization of hospice and palliative care services. A systematic review of the literature which focused on under usage of end-of-life care was conducted. MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ProQuest Nursing and Allied Source databases were searched (2005 to 2017). Studies that evaluated interventions for increasing hospice and palliative care services were selected. Conceptual variables included studies that addressed the under usage of end-of-life care. Kolcoba's comfort theory, …
